Yeah, I said I'll elabrote

The story is a carbon copy of Nania almost

Mia Wasikowska was very one tone thoughout the whole movie, she was bland

Johnny Depp was terrible, he was a usless tosser, who got too much screen time.

On the other hand, Alan Rickman, Stephan Fry, Micheal Sheen all provide great voices. And Helen Botham Carter was a lot of fun.

The action sequences are bland, unintresting and unexciting

It looks great visually, but the 3D is quite tame and feels unnessacery.

2 stars. Rental

Wow, Spiderman 3 breaks all-time box office records from audiences hoping it'll be good!

Seriously, I sat next to a couple of teen slackers (who'd taken my front-tier handicapped seat), who'd clearly staked out the calendar and waited months to see What Tim Would Give Them--But by the end credits, I'd gotten the impression of even some of the milder Tim-zombies thinking it'd gone in a lot of wrong "meh" directions.
You can tell when the end credits appear onscreen, and it's like someone fired a starting pistol in the theaters...Annnd, they were off!

I was talking to a "Burton Bummer" last night, who had apparently watched the film early on the internet (tut tut) and I told her the story was bad, all I got was that I can't handle strange stuff and that this is burton's reinterpitation. she once said that it's good just because burton reinvisioned alice in wonderland, and that it was all Burton's imagination. Nothing to do with Lewis Caroll, I guess then

I was looking at my spiderman dvd box set last night. It came with a thin sheet of paper that said it was the fastes movie to make 100million in 3 days. Just looking back at that kind of makes me laught. Look at movies like Dark Knight Twilight : New Moon Spiderman 3 and Transformers 2 all took 2 days to make 100+mill. I see now that Alice is on its way to make 100+mill in 3 days. It would would crazy to see a movie hit 100mill in 1 day.

I really loved this movie, as it's own work of art. I mean I was a little disappointed because the trailers made it out to be more epic than it actually was. This wasn't Tim Burton's best work, and I think the 3D had a lot to do with that, it really corrupted his visual style. I think he would have been far better off without 3D and to have more real set pieces augmented by matte paintings and the CGI. There was just sort of this clash between the very gimmicky cartoonish 3D and the parts that were actually real. I think it's good to compare this film to Avatar in this way. Cameron was able to fuse the 3D and the other technology, as well as the real elements and make it flow cohesively and look fantastic. I haven't seen Alice in 3D (don't intend to because I hate 3D and until they make it so people with glasses can watch without having to deal with glasses over glasses it's no deal) but it was very obvious that too much emphasis on flying sequences and stuff flying off screen would be even more distracting and plot stopping. It worked well for me in 2D, but Burton is a better artist when he lets his imagination go wild and is able to make sets and add his brand of quasi gothic romanticism into a story. I feel that here, the studio and the 3D really held him back from the dark, anarchic, and wildly imaginative epic he was capable of. I have no problem with his making a sequel of sorts, it was an interesting take on material that has been retold over and over again, I just feel he was limited to brief stabs of dark humor in a movie that is very colorful and very family friendly. That is not to say the visuals weren't imaginative or stunning, because they were, I just feel he could have put more of himself into the work. Movies like Dr. Parnassus and Coraline felt much more in line with what Burton usually does, and it's a shame he let Disney shackle him to a weird technology and a PG rating. Despite it's technical and story let downs this is still a very solid, very imaginative, and very engaging fantasy. It is full of brilliant performances, mostly by Depp, Carter, and the voice actors, and I also found Hathaway to be quite good in her role as a goofily sweet fairy queen with a very dark side. I've seen this film two times already and plan to see it a third at some point. I don't recommend the 3D though.

Okay, seriously: Not to play up the "Not within a hundred miles of the book" card again, but show of hands, how many have never read "Looking Glass" and thought the WQ in the book really was Glinda, just on no other basis than Tim's Oz-pop confusion?

<counts>

...Ohh, I do so enjoy doing this:
http://www.literature.org/authors/ca...hapter-05.html
(And for those who wonder how closely they got the "Red Queen", unquote, here's a chance to compare BOTH of them:
http://www.literature.org/authors/ca...hapter-09.html )

(There's "Adaptation", there's "Innovation", and then there's just plain ol'-fastioned "Making Crap Up Because You Didn't Know Any Better".)
