I never opened mine, but I understand from reviews when they were first released that what you say is correct.

Anyone else get it? Not surprised really, amazon have moved some things around about 3 or four times in pre-orders for me with them normally ending up back where they started.

They were the LD versions ported onto DVD and are still considered to be a massive kick in the nuts to all Star Wars fans. The non anamorphic thing hurt the most it was like GL saying 'well you wanted the original they weren't anamorphic, make up your mind'.

I have the un-opened set but would only play them on a 4:3 CRT. Although a few people have cropped the picture so they fit on a widescreen TV without zooming. But the resolution is a lot lower than a DVD.

I still haven't pre-ordered the set I'm waiting for more info and pictures but will probably buy the full set. My OT DVD boxset was pre-ordered and it came damaged so I sent it back to Play and recieved a slighlty less damaged version (which I kept). If I remember my friends bought the same set from Tesco or ASDA for a couple of pounds more and theirs was perfect. Not sure I want to go through that again if it's a cardboard box like the OT.

I'd imagine if you go with the complete set it'll be hard cardboard, similar to the Alien Anthology, because it's such a major release.

But being such a huge Star Wars fan I've just gone ahead and pre-ordered and am not bothered with how it's packaged.

I'm really not bothered by the package style TL it's just reading all the horror story's we've had with Inception and Back to the Future sets the delays the damaged goods etc. I don't think I can bear it to be honest. I few dents I'm okay with but I've had stuff in pieces. And we don't pay less for damaged goods.

If the in-store price is within 5-10 pounds of the on-line price I'm going in-store.

Regardless of online/instore price difference, when it comes down to a release of this magnitude I ain't bothering with pre-order balony. It's instore for me.

To give anyone unfamiliar with the difference here's some screens from the DVDs (Special edition then Theatrical):

And a few extra SE shot including the infamous Han Solo bar scene

A great comment I saw on amazon that adds perspective...thought I would share!

Anders Blom says:
One thing that many of us are forgetting about is: Lucas is an old fat bastard. Being a bastard is a pain, but being old and fat means he will kick the bucket soon. When that happens the proprietor of his estate will do what any smart capitalist would do; sell more stuff. Which means the older films WILL be remastered and restored and re-issued in a limited ultimate collectors edition or something to that extent.

If Metropolis can be restored after 84 years of butchered ambiguity, then rest assured that Star Wars will survive the climate controlled film vaults of the modern 43 year or so span.

Ten more years, have patience.

I usually don't like pre-order reviews, but... Unfortunately Anders Blom isn't aware that GL has an alien symbiote inside his beard which makes him immortal.

Thanks Dave I tried to do something like this earlier as someone in the other thread asked about Yoda needless to say I failed miserably so kudos to you. Man those theatrical edition LD's transfers stunk.

With all the amazing boxsets that get released these days, it's a real shame there isn't a Vader helmet edition of the set coming out.

I love my Alien egg and Inception briefcase, so why do we get a cardboard box for Star Wars?
I'd happily pay a bit more for some special edition packaging. Or maybe that's still to come...

How about a Jar-Jar Binks head that says "Anneeeeeee!" each time you open it up?

Poodoo! to that one. I want a Death Star that splits like a Fabergé egg and has the discs in the middle.

Just let Lucas bleed the initial blu-ray release, then it's only a matter of time.
