Just because a movie that initially flopped finds an audience on home video years later doesn't mean a sequel is going to do any better. Blade Runner 2049 anyone?

^ Blade Runner is an R-rated movie though, so you can't really compare it to this.

I'm fine with it going to streaming, but I think some of you are under-estimating the following this movie has, especially among women. Plus, you'd have parents who grew up with the original bringing their kids to see it now.

When the pandemic started and studios started re-releasing their older movies in theaters, I'm pretty sure Hocus Pocus brought in the biggest box-office of any of them, even more than titles like Jurassic Park and Empire Strikes Back.

Hocus Pocus gets played on cable TV on multiple channels EVERY October. There's still tons of merch for it at Spirit Halloween.

A sequel would definitely do AT LEAST $50M domestic if they decided to release it in theatres.

Even the Disney theme parks put a major emphasis on the Hocus Pocus characters during fall and the crowds love them when they show up. I'm not saying a rabid theme park crowd is indicative of box office success, but the movie/characters do have a big following and I think it would have shown up at the box office, but whatever. I'm happy to watch it at home.

I agree. Hocus Pocus is a huge property for Disney. It only isn't seen as much as other films because it is a Halloween-time film and that is when it is seen. I would expect its sequel to make big money in theaters at Halloween-time.

If can't do at least $100M domestic than its probably more valuable as a streaming exclusive for Disney

I'll be subbing to Disney+ just for this, unless they release it to other providers on the same day, but I doubt it.

I'll see it since I have Disney+ However, just by looking at the teaser, I have a feeling this sequel won't live up to expectations. Will probably be inferior to the first one.

Looks like a lot of fun! I'm going into it with as low expectations as possible. I don't expect it to be as good as the original, but I'm at least hoping to have some fun.

It's amusing to me how, despite being dead for however long, the Sandersons came back looking like they've had a fair amount of work done. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy they didn't de-age them, and it doesn't really bother me- I think they look great, it's just amusing. Hell must have some great plastic surgeons!

I've said it before and I'll say it again - Disney is absolutely IDIOTIC by not giving this a theatrical release. What’s the point in going directly to streaming? How many actual new subscriptions will this even generate? I feel like most people who want Disney+ already have it so you’re not driving that many new subscribers.

By making this exclusive to Disney+, the studio is not only losing all the theatrical money but also the revenue they would generate with physical media sales (the original movie STILL sells).

Really shaking my head at this baffling decision by Disney and I wish I could make some sense of this.

The irony is it probably doesn't get made if Disney+ didn't exist. I'd have preferred a theatrical release, though, and would have been there opening weekend.

The teaser was fine. I think the hype around it is probably going to be more fun than the actual movie, but either way, I'm looking forward to revisiting the world in a couple of months.

My thoughts as well. Hard to top a classic but let’s hope it’s worth the wait. Going in optimistic with a side of caution!

I agree. This movie would have made MILLIONS with a theatrical release. But they're so hung up on getting subscribers so they must think this will generate more subscribers. I also wouldn't be surprised if Disney+ coincidently raised their price in mid September.

I'm so excited!! It ACTUALLY looks amazing and feels like they successfully take off where the first ended. The tone and atmosphere is on point. Perfect trailer.

Crazy not to release this in theaters. This would have blown up the box office compared to Lightyear. I hope it blows up Disney+ so much. This feels too good to be true. Hocus Pocus IS Halloween to me. That and Michael Myers and we get both this season!!
