It probably wouldn't be a good move for them to only show 4K film trailers in 4K, which would disqualify a lot of viewers.

Do you watch trailers from IMDb and/or Blu-ray.com on your 4K television, or have 4K monitors at your computer? I don't. I'm sitting here on my computer with HD monitors.

Also: why do you think they include BDs with the 4K discs? For people that do not yet have a 4K video system, but want to future proof their film purchases.

I can think of other reasons, but mostly it's an industry-standard thing to be sure the legacy users (which is still MOST people) aren't feeling left out.

Edit: It just occurs to me that they could release it with scaling, self-detect video options that would automatically select HD if UHD is not available. I guess that's fair.

4k videos and trailers on Youtube can play on a 1080p monitor. You can select the resolution. You can select 4k and it will play even if you have a 1080p monitor hooked up - it will down-scale it. Or you can select a lower resolution.

You can also easily download any Youtube video using any number of different browser add-ons so you can view it on your TV manually via usb thumb drive, media player, etc.

The point is it's a 4k release, it should get a 4k Youtube trailer so those of us that are interested can view it in 4k. There are tons of 4k videos on Youtube these days. The bitrate averages around 15-18mbps, which is good enough to get a nice idea of the clarity the upcoming release would offer.

Does the directors cut contain the scenes at the end inside the ship like the special edition cut? I have never seen those scenes, only theatrical cut.

No, only the SE has those scenes. Spielberg was forced to add them and never wanted to. He felt the mothership's interior should be left mysterious, and I tend to agree.

Yes - I agree as well. I do prefer the Directors Cut though which still keeps that ending scene out but does add a few others that IMO are worthwhile. Few other small but tangible changes too.

Agreed on all point. DC is the way to go IMO.

I agree that the Director's Cut is the best version. If nothing else, it's the only one that has both the bedroom fight between Roy & Ronnie and the full next-morning scene with Roy throwing everything he can find into the kitchen. I feel like having that whole sequence intact actually makes Ronnie more sympathetic.

I'm usually not a fan of revisionist filmmaking, but in this case, there are no new effects, and the actual cut is probably very close to what we would have gotten in the summer of '78 if Spielberg had been granted the extra time to finish editing in the first place.

That said, I do hope the UHD has all three (and without the minor errors that were on the Blu-ray).

I actually find it makes her colder, which was Spielberg's point of including that fight in the special edition, so we can understand his motivations later a bit clearer. He asks her for help and she slams the door on his face.

Exactly. You can watch that trailer in 144p if you actually wanted to. They aren't excluding anyone by releasing a 4K version.

There's a brief music hiccup on the original version, during the scene where Roy has the news on while he's building the mountain in his living room. Pretty sure it's a branching error, and I guess it could depend on your player, but others here have mentioned it before.

Also, there's a line missing from the Special Edition. In the opening scene, when the project leader finds the calendar and photos in the plane's cockpit, Laughlin should be overheard saying "You! Listen to me, will ya?" The line is not in the OV or the DC, so it was probably just an oversight during the preparation of the new masters. (I think it was missing on the 2007 DVD, too.)

Like I said, minor. But it'd be nice if they caught them this time.

I don't know, to me it puts her on a more bumpy emotional roller coaster. Her husband seems to realize something's wrong with him, and then quickly turns oblivious, and they have a huge fight. She sleeps in the kids' room, and the next morning she's ready to talk it out again, but before she can say anything he's shoveling dirt into their kitchen.

Having all that together makes her decision to leave more understandable, and our sympathy for Roy more complicated. I'm not sure if that was the intention, but that's the way it comes across to me.

If Closet Cases of the Nerd Kind is not included in this, I might just be upset. Not certain though.

The apple trailers version linked to in post #249 has grain for sure. Much better quality than the YouTube version.

Of course, the big question here as with other older catalog titles being redone in 4K is how much of an upgrade this will really be over the current bluray release. IMO, the current blu-ray PQ & overall presentation is very good. Just like T2, Dracula and some others....ya gotta wonder how tangible the 4K redo will be. I have a feeling that some of these wont be must-haves.

Weird, I could have SWORN that that line WAS included on my copy of the SE version. I grew up on that cut of the film for years, to the point that it stuck out for me NOT hearing him say that in the other two versions, so I switched to the SE to see if I had imagined the line, and there it was. Now I'm gonna have to go home and re-check this. What if I find that it's there? I wonder if only some copies were effected (or if some players handled the branching incorrectly).

I also wonder how long Sony is going to let us twist in the wind wondering if all three versions are on the 4K disc.
