I just got an email from Amazon saying that Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind has been pushed back to October 31st.

Did I make the right call? Or are these releases going to be superior in *significant* ways? If the only difference is likely to be the subtitles on the Japanese audio tracks, I don't really mind much to be honest, but I should have researched more perhaps. The only other Disney ones that I don't have are Tales From Earthsea, Whisper of the Heart, and The Wind Rises.

Should I pick those up, and Porco Rosso, before they go out of print? Or should I get the new releases (though I don't think we're getting new release of The Wind Rises, so I guess I ought to pick that up sooner than later?) which seem to be cheaper than Disney's releases on Amazon (pre-order prices vs current Disney prices that is)... What is smartest, if I want to own all of these movies? I've put off the ones I don't have yet long enough!
None of the titles you mentioned have any issues (except Ponyo's lossy Japanese track.) It doesn't sound like the new editions will add anything substantial to the packages so if you really want them you might as well go for them...or you can wait.

Arrietty's Disney dub changes a few things making certain things in the movie (including the ending) feel and sound a bit different than in the original version. If one prefers watching these movies in dubbed version, seeking an edition with UK English track would be well worth it.

We don't know one way or the other if it'll be on the re-release though right? I try to keep up with this thread but haven't seen anything other than when they said it might be possible.

Though GKIDS did mention about the possibility of having the UK English track included but it wasn't confirmed in the press releases. Looks like it is not happening.

Funny, just as we're talking about this, turns out a few theaters in my area are showing Nausicaä next week on Sunday, Monday and Wednesday.

I was just looking at GKIDS' twitter page, and they have FINALLY detailed 8 of the upcoming releases.
https://twitter.com/GKIDSfilms/statu...23212935548928
https://twitter.com/GKIDSfilms/statu...22754380689408
They all come with an 8 to 12-page booklet and they all claim to have new transfers. ( though I'm not really sure most of them could look much better than already do ) The bonus features are largely the same for most of them, No real mention of new subtitles, but that doesn't there aren't any. Castle in the Sky has an additional audio track but it doesn't clarify if it is the extended score or not. ( It just says Joe Hisaishi's original score )

Here's another status update for the rest of other titles:

https://twitter.com/GKIDSfilms/statu...23212935548928

Considering that these are no longer released by Disney, I guess we can assume that any special features which include "Introduction by John Lasseter" won't be on any of these new re-releases? Other than that, I can't tell what could have been improved or not.

do Ponyo and Howl's Moving Castle have their original DTS-ES 6.1 soundtracks now?

glad to see the commentary track for 'Nausicaa' - now I can sell off my UK bluray.

The Laputa listing confuses me too. While I prefer Hisaishi's original score, I'd love to have both options. It does say "ENglish dub with Hisaishi's original score" and then "English dub". Maybe the second listing means with the "new" score (which was done for the first Disney dub release...)

Yeah it's confusing alright. I think they're basically saying that you get an additional English track which features both Hisaishi's original score and the English dub. What's confusing is how they've listed it, which appears to be as an extra, not in the main feature presentation options shown in the blurb above the extra features list. So IMO what they mean is that you have the following:

Feature film presentation options: 1.85:1 WideScreen, English 5.1 DTS-HD, Japanese 2.0 DTS-HD, French 2.0 Dolby Digital

PLUS an additional English 5.1 DTS-HD track that features Jō Hisaishi's original score.

Seems Ponyo will definitely be worth the upgrade simce it includes about 3 hours of new material (to the US). Howl is getting new featurettes as well

I still have my US Collected Works set but some of these discs are tempting with the added features. But I think I'm good just waiting for the Takahata titles.

As to "new transfers" they're more than likely just using buzzwords. As far as I know the HD masters are the ones from the JP BDs which have been used everywhere else and are already great. The only film that seems to a have different transfer is Nausicaa in the Collected Works set.

Yeah, Ponyo seems to have the most significant upgrade in terms of extras out of all of them (though nothing I'm particularly interested in). As for Howls' Moving Castle there are three extras that the Disney BD didn't have, Interview with Diana Wynne Jones, Explanation of CG, and The Birth Story of the Film Soundtrack which I'm pretty sure is an extra on the Disney release of Tales From Earthsea.

Well, the English dub with orchestral score " the North American version " was listed as a bonus feature on the Japanese disc.

I went to the English Fathom Events screening of Castle in the Sky. The updated orchestral score was used (but NOT the adlibbed dialogue), so there is a possibility it might be on the new Blu-ray somewhere.

New transfers might mean the higher bit rate versions used on the amazon set, but with the extras added back on (the set discs had nothing but the subtitles and one or two trailers for other Disney stuff).

What the heck? Kiki's Delivery Service drops "The Locations of Kiki" segment from the Japanese TV special. My Neighbor Totoro and Ponyo both keep theirs. Hopefully it's just an oversight on the part of whoever made the promotional image. Otherwise, I'm tossing out the included DVD copy and putting the Disney Blu-ray in its place.
