I don't even think Seven Samurai is Kurosawa's best film (that would be Rashomon for me), or even the best Japanese period film from 1954 (which is Sansho the Bailiff).

Seven Samurai is very good but I've also always felt the film is kinda overpraised.

The part about the clunky exposition just made me hate his films even more. They could have done 7 minutes just on that.

I loved both, but yeah Seven Samurai can be daunting for first time viewers.

Only 7 minutes??? I'm pretty sure the first hour of 'Inception' is spent setting up rules that they then break or that don't seem to matter once the heist part starts.

goddamn nolan... he got this great idea of exploring unlimited vastnesses of dreaming and decided to waste it on a heist flick. impressively stupid.

It's the culmination of his development as a writer and director. The schlock aspects of, in particular, Vol. 1 unfortunately overshadow what is actually a smart and very touching film. Subsequent Tarantino films have been steps to the side instead of steps taken forward. They're still good, but both KB films are QT at his peak IMO.

I think he's one of my favourite directors because I can't choose a favourite film. I even like Death Proof a lot - yeah, that's an unpopular opinion.
