I tried to watch it on HBO but they didn't offer the Japanese language version. GKids said they were trying to get them to put it up when I asked them on Facebook, but I don't know if they ever did.

The collector's edition is pretty steep, but I'm a sucker for getting the soundtrack along with the film. The movie is good, but I didn't find it as enchanting as some of his other films.

Did anybody's else's 4K disc freeze at around 1 hour 24 minutes? I was able to jump ahead a few seconds and continue, but still annoying.
There also seemed to be a dropout right after the credits begin (between the title and the credits) but maybe that's how it was meant to sound. |

I still get what sounds like a skip at the end though, between when the title comes up on a white background and when the credits begin. Maybe it's supposed to be that way, but it sounds weird. |

I seem to be the only person who thinks this is Shinkai's first actually good film. His films before WWY all had good elements, and mostly had decent construction, but always failed on a narrative and characterization level, as I see it. His films used to be style with so, so little substance, but WWY shows a depth in writing greater than all prior films combined (it's still pretty basic at the end of the day, but it's better than just taking the same concept and reusing it every time with little variation and with no depth to the characters).
But I've always been that one person who thought Shinkai was never that great to begin with. |

5 Centimeters per Second is still my favorite. Something magical about that one.

For me, Weathering With You is his second best movie. The characters are better written this time, but the last 20 minutes or so kind of falls apart. I get the message they were going for, but it didn't work for me.
I still think Your Name is his best movie and my personal favorite. It's the one where I feel like Shinkai nails it perfectly. Someone mentioned that it's very simple and bland, and I completely disagree. Sometimes simple is great if it the execution is good and in Your Name's case it was incredible. I can understand why some people felt the characters were bland, but I was very attached to them because of the emotional journey they went on. I loved the story because of it's simplicity along with some great visual symbolism. It's definitely one of my favorite movies of all time. Last edited by TheCurryman; 03-17-2021 at 07:20 PM. |

If I do get this, it’d just be for the soundtrack. It’s better to get it like this than to separately buy the 2K disc and import the soundtrack. That said, I’m split torn on whether I should watch the 2K disc first then 4K later or vice versa. The 4K reviews from both critics and customers seems to point out that the oversharpening is what makes the upscale unbearable.

Did Shout! ever respond to the region locking? Someone mentioned it in the Halloween thread and whilst I can live with locked BDs, I'd probably pass on the new UHDs if they're going to get screwy (I assume it's just an anime rights thing).
