The collector's edition is pretty steep, but I'm a sucker for getting the soundtrack along with the film. The movie is good, but I didn't find it as enchanting as some of his other films.

Did anybody's else's 4K disc freeze at around 1 hour 24 minutes? I was able to jump ahead a few seconds and continue, but still annoying.

There also seemed to be a dropout right after the credits begin (between the title and the credits) but maybe that's how it was meant to sound.

Did you try dusting /cleaning the disc with a cloth? The only time I ever had something like that occur, by simply making sure the disc was dust free and putting it back in fixed it for good.

It was brand new, but I'll check.

Yes it happened to me on a brand new disc too. Brand new sometimes there can be some factory dust left on the disc.

I checked and didn't see anything, so I put the disc in and played the motorcycle scene again and it didn't get stuck this time. Maybe something was there and fell off.

I still get what sounds like a skip at the end though, between when the title comes up on a white background and when the credits begin. Maybe it's supposed to be that way, but it sounds weird.

I seem to be the only person who thinks this is Shinkai's first actually good film. His films before WWY all had good elements, and mostly had decent construction, but always failed on a narrative and characterization level, as I see it. His films used to be style with so, so little substance, but WWY shows a depth in writing greater than all prior films combined (it's still pretty basic at the end of the day, but it's better than just taking the same concept and reusing it every time with little variation and with no depth to the characters).

But I've always been that one person who thought Shinkai was never that great to begin with.

No, you're not that one person. It's just that the consensus is that Shinkai's a genius and a saviour (from what?) and can do no wrong. That's the impression I've always gotten from the reactions over the years. Prayers at the altar of Shinkai. Just like you, I've always found his films beautiful - in exactly the same way every time - and his characters and messaging shallow and on the nose - in exactly the same way every time. All dials to 11 kind of stuff. Even WWY wasn't much different for me, but it has moments. Mostly in the secondary characters for me. There's a bit more room for something real and human in this one, but most of the space is still occupied by larger than life hype dreams of emotions and relationships so pure they're no longer human. So no, you're not alone.

Shinkai is a hack just like Anno. Overpraised for absolutely no reason. Your Name is honestly one of the most bland animated movies I've ever seen from Japan and every single one of his works has the generic same face syndrome "how to draw anime" look to em. Extremely bare bones. Simple movies for simple people made by a simple bland man.

I do agree to a certain extent. Still enjoy his films.

I thought Your Name was his first good one. But just barely, still bordering on mediocrity. I'm not a fan either. I've always found his background art too shiny and fanciful and his characterization/dialogue shallow and fake.

5 Centimeters per Second is still my favorite. Something magical about that one.

For me, Weathering With You is his second best movie. The characters are better written this time, but the last 20 minutes or so kind of falls apart. I get the message they were going for, but it didn't work for me.

I still think Your Name is his best movie and my personal favorite. It's the one where I feel like Shinkai nails it perfectly. Someone mentioned that it's very simple and bland, and I completely disagree. Sometimes simple is great if it the execution is good and in Your Name's case it was incredible. I can understand why some people felt the characters were bland, but I was very attached to them because of the emotional journey they went on. I loved the story because of it's simplicity along with some great visual symbolism. It's definitely one of my favorite movies of all time.

If I do get this, it’d just be for the soundtrack. It’s better to get it like this than to separately buy the 2K disc and import the soundtrack. That said, I’m split torn on whether I should watch the 2K disc first then 4K later or vice versa. The 4K reviews from both critics and customers seems to point out that the oversharpening is what makes the upscale unbearable.

Did Shout! ever respond to the region locking? Someone mentioned it in the Halloween thread and whilst I can live with locked BDs, I'd probably pass on the new UHDs if they're going to get screwy (I assume it's just an anime rights thing).

I don't think they did, if it was even asked. I think there's 4 region locked UHDs. This is the only anime that's locked on UHD.
