There is a pandemic. Some of those people might not even be around 2 months. This pandemic could be the end for some and has been. It's a much more serious issue than opening up a giant screen for people to do something they can do safely at home. They're giving the best of both worlds. Most theaters are going to close or re-close anyway because they are not making any money during this pandemic. Most of the theaters around me have been absolutely dead. I for one am glad of this decision during such a crisis that one studio cared more about their fans.

How are they making any money? Most people probably will free trial this.
Would be nice to know how are they covering the budgets for these? Doesnt effect my theater going next year. |

To date, HBO Max is only available in the US so the International BO will cover the budgets. |

Like I said, I'm sure AT&T/WB knows more about what they can and cannot advertise for it. Not sure what law they're breaking by showing GvK. Worst case, they'll remove it. They're not getting sued for it.

Will be interesting to see Disney's reaction to this news. Their Investor Day is a week from today.

GvK and Dune require the agreement of Legendary (who put up 75%) and Warners (25%). Either can block a deal, and the contentious relationship between the two and Legendary' past history of reaching for lawyers at the drop of a hat means that if they genuinely weren't informed - and since they have nothing to gain from it going to HBO MAX - it will come down to lawyers at dawn since Legendary's previous Monsterverse films deal granted Warners better terms - first position reimbursement of marketing costs from the first dollar and a distribution fee - based on theatrical distribution.
For roughly $50m apiece Warners can afford to dump them, but at $150m apiece with nothing else in the pipeline Legendary can't without a great deal. Last edited by Aclea; 12-03-2020 at 09:33 PM. |

All the usual suspects with the usual comments in here. The cinema is not dead all we are seeing here is desperation from a company that are simply not at the races right now. Something like 8.6 million subscribers for HBO Max when Disney are hitting 80 million and Netflix comfortably more than double that.
Some people are also missing the fact that without the cinema, most of these mega blockbusters will slowly die off. That’s not speculation, it’s fact. Some people are celebrating a short term gain against a long term devastation. I think you need to look at yourselves in a mirror if you call yourselves film fans. Final note, HBO Max don’t even have 4K! It’s like having a economy burger when a top class steakhouse is 100 yards away. |
