Wasn't it pulled shortly before a scheduled release? I can see it being part of a future set, especially since something similar seems to have happened with Taxi Driver.

I'm not as keen on "Oliver!," but I'll take the rest.

Actually it was a moving target. Regarding Vol 1, many people did not believe it was a limited edition release, a lot of people held off buying it, and unfortunately were left out in the cold. Also many countries including the UK and Australia were excluded from the rollout, so many people in Europe and elsewhere ordered from the States, thus driving up demand. There were three kinds of customers, first the carpetbaggers who bought up 10-20 sets or more, to sell on Ebay. Second people who only wanted a couple of the movies who, kept them and parted out the rest on Ebay. Finally the people like me who wanted to collect the set and did jus that. I found in on sale at BestBuy Canada for 100 bucks, great deal. The moral is if you want it just place an online order right away, you will not regret it.

Well.. I agree with it's status as a masterpiece! I just think its deserved a standalone release for more hype. I think of Sorkin as highly as anyone. And The Social Network is one of my favourite movies ever. In fact it's #7 for me ALL TIME. So don't think that I'm knocking its place in history by finding it odd to say "classic". Modern classic? Okay. That's a distinction someone mentioned I could see making sense. Within the Sony library it is the definitive modern classic.

Wasn't 'On The Waterfront' rumored for this set?

Who in their right mind would choose 'Oliver!' or 'Stripes' ahead of that classic.

I know which one I’d watch more, it rhymes with ‘cripes’

So many titles were rumored. Rumors shouldn’t be taken as gospel.

I wouldn't be surprised if they reserve the most-requested titles like On the Waterfront to be the 1 or 2 high-demand "headliners" of each set, like Taxi Driver and Social Network are here, or Lawrence and Strangelove previously. I don't mind too much as I'd pay the same for 2 or 3 boutique releases, and I can sell off the ones I don't want. However they can justify it to the bean counters and keep the sets coming, I'm happy to be getting them at all.

Yeah, Stripes is the one true downer in this box for me. I don’t like The Social Network but I’ll at least give that one another shot, especially with the uncensored version included. But I have no interest in ever watching Stripes again.

Obviously this is all totally subjective, though. Clearly a lot of people here are MOST excited about Stripes. Seems nuts to me, but ‘tis the nature of opinions.

On The Waterfront would have to be used for the slot occupied by Anatomy Of A Murder for a movie from the 50s if their logic of one per decade was followed for this volume (both also put out on BD by Criterion). Maybe you'll see it in the third volume.

Sony aren't going to put all their most prestige titles in one collection then have further volumes of lesser titles. Classics such as On the Waterfront, It Happened One Night, The Lady from Shanghai and Anaconda won't all be gathered together in one set for example.

Overall, I'm more excited for this set than I was for the previous volumes as there's more titles I'm interested in this time around.

Always happy to see more on 4K and the investment Sony is making for this box set. I honestly forgot that Oliver was a Best Picture winner and will give it a spin. Stripes I do enjoy but not sure how much benefit a 4K transfer will be. That said, the box will be mine and go on the shelf next to Vol 1.

Oh wow, unrated Social Network is very exciting. Hope it just fixes those obvious profanity dubs.

Yeah I believe it was initially going to have a 4K release but was then subsequently cancelled.
