Some truth here, although I dont agree that the majority of the fanbase is toxic. Just the loudest ones are. No question the prequels took a lot of flak. I was in the middle when they came out. They were OK - I loved some of it and didnt like some of it. As they aged though, they got better and better, IMO. Now, I love them.

I was in the middle of it too as a kid. It's weird but I feel vindicated by the appreciation the prequel era has gotten. Still, if I was Lucas and I had to put up with 11 years of fans whinging and accusing me of ruining their childhoods, I'd probably want nothing to do with it either.

I thought most of the backlash wasn't from the prequels but from altering the original trilogy?

There was backlash over both, IIRC.

I agree - its sad. I always hated the "ruined my childhood" comment. Its like, your childhood already happened, dipshit.

Actually both. The OT tweaks were controversial though, for sure.

There was even a little backlash against Empire Strikes Back when it came out.

Hopefully as time goes on, people will also be open-minded enough to understand the sequel trilogy.

Feelings on the PT are mixed. But pretty sure everyone hated the OT tweaks.

I imagine with the backlash, GL lost his confidence. He was done with major film releases.

George Lucas said in an interview once that films are never completed, they are only abandoned, and rather than live with his "abandoned" Classic Star Wars Trilogy movies, his wanted to go back and "complete" them the way he wanted but was impossible to do back in the 1970s in terms of time and money and limited visual effects. So in my opinion, the 1997 "Special Edition" re-releases with the CGI stuff were justified. They are even more impressive with further ajustments for the DVD, the Blu-Ray, and the 4K UHD releases.

Actually I think Stanley Kubrick said that about films. . Either way, no doubt that new 'toys" available as years went on got George interested in making changes to his films. I actually like some of the changes to the OT and updates myself but I know that they did anger most people.

I dont think it has anything to do with open-mindedness or understanding. Most people "got them". They just didnt like the creative decisions, character changes/rollbacks, somewhat incoherent plot, and the final film which just doesnt work. As a trilogy, the sequels dont feel like one.

No amount of time will change that, IMO. The prequels at least feel like a real trilogy. They are 100% George and blend together perfectly.

George Lucas was only quoting what Stanley Kubrick said about films, I didn't say those were his own words.

The Star Wars films are very simple films that are fun to watch.

The dialogue at times is also very simple and sometimes stilted.

The deep dive people do regarding the films amuses me to no end, lots of great reading.

During Covid I bought a lot of Star Wars stuff but I actually don’t lose sleep over what Lucas did to the original trilogy and I watch his “corrected” films all the time and never am I upset over what he’s done.

That being said I did buy the original trilogy DVDs during covid

Keep posting, occasionally I actually learn something new.

Anyway...

It seems like Iger didn't manage to fix Disney stocks.

He also published this letter:

I think it's laughable that anyone would think that now it's the best time to be a Disney fan and not the '90s.

The honeymoon period after he came back is over. Now the real work begins...

What honeymoon period?

Disney was firing on all cylinders in the 1990s. Aside from the great and highly successful Disney animated movies (and live action projects such as The Mighty Ducks, Santa Clause, etc.), they also hit it big with Pixar, as well as the titles from their Touchstone Pictures, Hollywood Pictures and Miramax banners.

Lots of initial celebrating because Bob Iger is well-respected and Chapek really was that unpopular. But everyone's gotten used to Iger being back and now the sea is settling.

You hated Disney when they put out (among others) movies such as Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown (they owned Miramax at the time), Toy Story, Nightmare Before Christmas, Ed Wood, Sister Act, Ransom, Dead Presidents, Crimson Tide, Enemy of the State, Con Air, The Rock, Ransom, Grosse Pointe Blank, Starship Troopers (co-produced with TriStar Pictures), and many others?

Looking back at Bob Iger's Disney I don't share the enthusiasm very much, but he did make the company a ton of money.

Yeah. But I'm thinking of Disney overall and not just theater movies.
