It still sounds like Gloria Gaynor is going to burst into "I Will Survive" about 30 seconds in ...

I was hoping Sam Smith would surprise me ala Adele but nope, the theme does nothing for me. I've said for a while that Lana would've been a great choice so, assuming the rumours are true, it's a real shame they passed on her song. It's much better than Sam's.

I think Lana Del Rey will still be famous by the time the next Bond song comes around while Smith will be a contestant on Celebrity Big Brother.

They should have had Darlene Love sing it. Her new album (produced by Steven van Zandt) is really great.

But she may be too old school for young audiences.

I'm finally listening to the song in its entirety, and I like it.

I don't love it, but I like it.

On the subject, let's have everyone's Top Five James Bond Theme Songs.

I'll get the ball rolling...

1. "We Have All the Time in the World" by Louis Armstrong
2. "You Only Live Twice" by Nancy Sinatra
3. "Goldfinger" by Shirley Bassey
4. "A View to a Kill" by Duran Duran
5. "Live and Let Die" by Paul McCartney

Yeah, I know... The Louis Armstrong song is a secondary theme, but still...

Now, the rough-around-the-edges James Bond instrumental theme from Dr. No rules all, but, for the purposes of the Top Five, I'm just listing actual songs with lyrics.

Not a big fan of the song, but maybe in time it will grow on me. People seem to be bashing Sam Smith, but I don't think it's him... its the song. It's just doesn't have the punch I want out of a Bond theme song. Maybe in context with the opening scene of the movie it will make sense but the pacing of the song and the mood just feels off to me.

I'm pretty meh about this Sam Smith song, but then even though I'm a massive Bond fan, the theme songs have, for the longest while, all been pretty bland. I'm talking right back to the 70s with stuff like Moonraker. At least back in the 60s that crooning style of music was the style, but they keep going back to the well so frequently and the results are dullsville. Every now and then they shake things up with something like A View To A Kill or You Know My Name. Even Die Another Day dared to be something different, but of course so many Madonna haters or electronica haters bashed that, so it's back to the dull crooning, warbling songs. Skyfall may have won the Oscar for Best Song but for me it's so unmemorable, it's not a tune I have stuck in my head or find myself humming for days after. Same with this newest one.

My top five would be:
  • "Skyfall" - Adele
  • "Diamonds Are Forever" - Shirley Bassey
  • "You Know My Name" - Chris Cornell (Casino Royale)
  • "A View To A Kill" - Duran Duran
  • "Surrender" - k.d. lang (Tomorrow Never Dies end credits)
Close runner-ups would be "Goldfinger" by Shirley Bassey," "Mr Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" by Dionne Warwick (from Thunderball), "The World Is Not Enough" by Garbage, "Another Way To Die" by Jack White and Alicia Keys (from QoS), and "Where Has Everybody Gone?" by the Pretenders (from The Living Daylights).

I think my favorite opening credit sequences would be everything from GoldenEye up to Skyfall - great imagery in the whole lot of them.

The entire sequence using Lana Del Rey's song in The Great Gatsby was definitely a highlight of the movie.

I'm not a Del Rey fan, but I agree, the use of that particular song was brilliant in TGG.

On Her Majesty's Secret Service will always have the best theme. But these are my other favorites:

A View to a Kill - Duran Duran
Nobody Does it Better - Carly Simon
Tomorrow Never Dies - Sheryl Crow
You Only Live Twice - Nancy Sinatra
Live and Let Die - Paul McCartney
