If this is true, then this is stuff of legend. Directing Star Wars AND Star Trek, amazing.

JJ is the man, best news to hit the Star Wars universe since Return of the Jedi. So excited!

I love J.J's work, but I do not want to see him do Star Wars.

I seem to recall his dumbest idea ever, to release a teaser scene through Conan, was it, and it was a two-second scene. This was also a man who refused to release any details about the production and who closed off the set to Star Trek because someone posted images from the production of "Star Trek: Into Darkness". JJ makes the ultra secret FISA Warrants look like a Fox News media production..
Creating anticpation and hype is "arcane"?
Speaking of dumb ideas...

I'm surprised and excited by this news. Nothing on starwars.com yet, so keeping my fingers crossed.

These movies have already been announced to be shot in 3D so unless he puts the lens flares in post we won't be seeing all those nasty anamorphic lens distortions.
Safe, generic blockbusters pretty much sums up Star Wars. And I love it!

No, the people who wanted someone else need to wear that.

All the old Trek movies were terrible, even Wrath of Kahn is cheesy dreck.

New Trek or old Trek, both are the wrong vibe for a SW film.

Brad Bird would have been a great choice...but he won't do it.
Bird, Rian Johnston, Vaughn, heck I would've even preferred David Fincher. Let's just hope Abraham's puts something good on screen.

Hiring someone like Vaughn, Johnson etc would have been interesting and inspired, but you have to admit they weren't realistic choices. Disney made a smart and safe choice with JJ Abrams. They need someone with a proven track record with Hollywood blockbusters, so JJ fit the criteria. There was no way they would have went with a lesser known name, not for the their first Star Wars movie at least.

Not saying I didn't want an outside the box director, but this choice makes sense from a business perspective.

Wrath of Khan was 30 yrs ago and hasn't aged well. But after the first movie, it was brilliant.

Bird is a doing another movie with Lindelof. Rian Johnston is too bland. I like Vaughn a lot but I don't think he is right for Star Wars. And Fincher is a great choice but he will never do a SW movie. His style wouldn't sit well with Disney/Lucas empire. I understand that people want something new brought to the table, but this franchise isn't about big, bold ideas. It is a formula. Same with Indiana Jones.

On the flipside, we might get to see this shot on film, this time. Hell, maybe even partially in IMAX.
Now that has me excited!

JJ, hey? Lol. Over at the Star Trek boards there was a lot of hate for Trek '09. Not including me, but nearly everyone hated it. And the name Jar Jar Abrams popped up pretty quick. Y'know, he ruined trek like Jar Jar ruined Wars. Whatever.

I was already looking forward to this, just 'cause it's Star Wars. Trek '09 is my favourite, and now I'm really REALLY looking forward to it!

JJ doing Star Wars? That has epic fail written all over it. Guess we will see all the lens flares in a Star Wars film now.

I like to believe that JJ is a smart enough guy that he will knock that stuff off for Star Wars, or at least cut back on it. He will stay true to the look of the original trilogy.

Well, he didn't use any in Mission Impossible III (at least not intentionally), and very few in Super 8 so I don't think the intentional use of lens flares in one movie is cause for concern.
