You could even consider Adcom

Yea ive been looking into adcom as well. Wish I could audition them against the emo.

Yea the only reason I like the Yammy is for the pre outs. Just dont like the tinny sound they produce. Hopefully an emo will improve the SQ

Adcom I believe is closer to neutral on the warm side, and the Emo will be a little brighter sounding....

Which is why I am leaning towards getting a really good receiver with a powerful amp like the Anthem MRX500 or if that is outta reach $$ wise, then I will see if I can swing the Marantz 6005 or the Denon 3311... I know I don't get the same amount of clean power as an external amp, but I figure it will drive the fairly inefficient Energys a lot better then my Sony can, which does a decent job btw, but I would like something more musical and powerful.

When I was shopping, I liked the sound of the Sony and the Denon 1909 best, but the Yamaha wasn't too far behind, although I have grown to like their sound even more perhaps, but yes, their lower lines do have a tinny sound... good call, never thought of it sounding like that, but I knew there was something I couldn't put my finger on...., and the Pioneer was on satelite speakers so I couldn't get a very good feel for it, but it just wasn't me I guess, perhaps it was the speakers too...

I leave my sony on full flat.... I think i get the most neutral sound from it that way. Maybe back the treble down some and see if that loses the tinny sound...

also the tweeters are aluminum, and they will have a little bit of a metalic sound, that could be part of what you hear, esp if your receiver has the treble on the eq tipped up and running hot... typically its not noticable unless you hear a soft dome next to it, or own speakers with soft dome tweet's and then hear the titanium or aluminum tweet's

back the treble down and see if that helps you.

Adam, I Like pure direct when listening to 2 channel music but I don't if it can be done in your case.

You coud plug the analog out of your BDP or CD player to an analog input as well as hdmi play music on the other source and movies trough HDMI.

Just hooked up my RC-10's to my PC for listening when going to bed.... sounds too damn good and I end up wanting to listen to more songs before passing out

I now I no longer have to listen to crappy audio through the iMac speakers so it is worth it.

Oly... I think he is talking about the receiver YAPO setting the eq to where it adds a tinny sound to the speakers... or to speakers in general. Since I have never heard Yamahas on anything but Klipsch and Polks I thought it was just those speakers, but it may be that his EQ settings are off for his ears....

I don't think it has to do with the playback mode.

I never really experience a tiny sound on the 563 at my friends before he bought the 2400es, I'm not sure is the sound tiny or it's a tiny background noise? Surely not the most powerful receiver but it gets the job done quite well.

I can hardly explain why it sounds like that, is it some kind of background noise?. By using pure direct you bypass the digital EQ.

So I thaught it could be a solution for music.

What is the EQ set at? I had the impression he said I don't like the tiny sound they produce meaning no dynamics.

yes they are underpowered but they sound good.

Well I'm kind of in limbo until I move in a few months, HT is not set up at the moment.. RC-30's and RC-10's were just sitting in their boxes so I had to take the RC-10's out of hybernation.

So I'll probably go back to a 4.1. The RC-LCR was out of my budget whenever I thought about it. If I can get a Rosewood for the right price once I settle though it is on!! First priority is a new sub (sold my VTF-HO w/Turbo as I want a nice tight sealed sub).

So yeah, TX-SR 805 (Onkyo) just running the RC-10's, haha At least it is a 24" iMac for DVD's (no Blu's on it )

----
side note, I talked my brother into buying the Veritas in-walls for his place (they were pretty inexpensive at audioadvisor). They look and more importantly sound fantastic!!

Im not 100% sure, see I have not heard Yamaha and Energys very much, but no matter what I play on Klipsch or Polks there is always something about the sound in the highs that just is tinny.

That is why I think it may have to do with the EQ settings, they may be pushing the highs too hard and giving the speakers are tipped up/hot sound that he doesn't like.

Yea it could be the speakers are so underpowered that when I want to play them at loud volumes is when I notice it the most. It does get distorted when I try to play anything higher than -16db on it.

Yea the 663 has a Pure Direct mode. Im gonna try that when I get an amp for 2ch listening to see what I like best.

I think adding seperates will do wonders for my system.

Id have to go and check what eq setting im using right now. Not sure off the top of my head.

Are you thinking ULS-15 Dual Drives... if so I am coming over.... I would love to hear that entire setup...

Awesome, I have heard the in-wall veritas are pretty damn good. 3-way design right? so they have good bass too.

Would you like for me to baby-sit the RC-30s and RC-10s for you until you move, perhaps that would convince the wife I need the RC-30s ($287 wwstereo) in my livingroom once you need yours again....

What is your cd player and what kind of media are you using to play music?

Many things can cause distortion let's put it this way Energy are really not forgiving with the highs I experience that sometimes even on my HK with bad recordings. The tweeter can crackle and sound broken at times.

It does not happen often in my case and since I changemy CD player I really have to fall on a bd recording to experience such a thing.

A separate amp will help for sure.

the one thing I had heard about the 663 is that it does reach its ceiling, esp in large rooms, which is why I was leaning towards the Sony, as no one mentioned this before I had bought it..... and I have never ran outta head room with it.

Perhaps it just runs outta gas and then you're hearing the amp strain

I use my BD player for cds. Thats all I have right now. Should be purchasing an AppleTV sometime soon, so I can play my large Itunes library instead of burning them to millions of discs.

It very well may be just because of the lower quality from the cds. I actually notice the most distortion and tinnyness(is that a word?) from my center channel when watching lossless blus at high volumes to be honest. Now I dont know if that has anything to do with me plugging the ports on the back (no room for it the breathe behind.)?
