Got to be a tough time for Steedeel having two family members with the virus. The better half has a close friend that contracted the virus and stayed in the hospital for many days. She did make it, was released and continues to recover. Hope the same for Steedeel's family.

Study: Starlink broadband could undercut rivals by 40%

Quote:
A study into global broadband retail prices from New BroadbandNow finds that Elon Musk’s Starlink highly disruptive broadband-by-satellite system could see significantly lower broadband prices for consumers.

The US-focused report suggests that Musk’s prices could undercut many rivals by as much as 20 per cent where the satellite system is competing with three or more rival suppliers, and by around 40 per cent when there are 9 or 10 rival players.

My 14 year-old Denon AVR 4806 bit the dust two nights ago.

I was watching a blu-ray when suddenly all of my speakers produced very loud electrical noises across every channel. The loudness of the noise was responsive to the volume control as I turned it down in a hurry. It did this on any input selected until it finally fell silent altogether. There were no weird odors and nothing was hot to the touch.

I turned it off, unplugged it, plugged it back in, turned it back on and it reset everything to factory defaults, but it will produce no sound at all. There are no unusual warning lights; it all looks normal just to look at it.

I guess buying a new AVR takes priority now; that'll put a stop to my disc buying for awhile. It will take me some time to replace it, too, as I also have other expenses to deal with. Nothing ever breaks at a convenient time, does it?

I hate to lose this AVR as it has many legacy connections that new AVRs lack, but an AVR this old is probably not worth repairing, either.

Sorry to hear about your AVR. Do you know if there is a local repair shop authorized by Denon? If you have to ship that could be $150 or more just for round trip shipping. Most likely there will be a diagnostic charge of $100 or more so you will have those charges to pay if you decide it is not worth it to repair. What to do , new or repair????

I have always used separates but I am on my 7th AVP for an average of 6.8 years. The only one that died on me was an Onkyo PR-SC5508 but it was under warranty so I only had to pay for shipping one way.

2 mornings ago we woke to the chemical smell of an electronic component that had burned. Took most of day with windows open and fans going to get rid of the smell. Tracked it down to the HTPC, have not determined if power supply, motherboard, HDD or Blu-ray drive. A PITA at any rate.

I am sorry to hear about your component self immolating; thankfully it did not start a fire.

I am replacing my AVR; that's decided. I was just wondering if my defective unit would be worth fixing and using as a bedroom receiver with my 60" 4K 3D TV? The nearest authorized repair centers are about 110 miles from me; I plan to call Denon and see what they have to say. At the least, I would like to know how my 4806 died.

I was leaning towards Denon's new X6700H ($2500), but I read a review at audiosciencereview.com that said Denon was already doing a voluntary recall due to it having a faulty capacitor. Audiosciencereview rated the next model down in Denon's lineup, the X4700H, better, but still recommended neither one.

JohnAV recommended the pricier Marantz SR8015 ($3200) and I watched one very positive review, so it is now my leading candidate. I am open to other suggestions, so if anyone has any please let me know.

I still have a older 4520CI, but Denon in the x4700, x6700 series have them a lot more compact crammed so read about a x6700 getting hot enough that it’s fans were actually running. That and actually putting my hand on one in a Magnolia Design it was quite warm. So the design of the power amp section is something that matters if you want a AVR last. I thought Denon current monster x8500 was getting towards the huge side as it’s a deep unit, but is it another grand above 8012.

AreaDVD.de a German site is really good describing and testing AVR and related products.

I spoke to Denon support and they confirmed that a small number of the new X6700H models have a subpar capacitor that they will replace, but there is no way of knowing which units are affected without submitting the serial number to them. Denon also claims that most people would not notice any problems, but who would be content with that weak reassurance?

I wonder if the previous model, the X6500H would be a better choice than the X6700H; I don't need 8K capability nor do I foresee ever needing it.

I am intrigued by that Marantz SR8015; it is significantly more expensive, but that's not a dealbreaker, either.

Denon's A110 is their new monster at $5500.

Another review
https://www.areadvd.de/tests/xxl-tes...mpatibilitaet/

I read about the cap flub, and seriously you don’t expect the x4700 to test superior.

But really their first batch with this issue, how do you know.

I was also looking Yamaha, Anthem, Nad, Pioneer models. The older x7200w was the last one I thought was a worthy successor, but then demon goes the x6700, x8500 choices, with nothing in between.
