Have you seen much film-noir? I'd describe it as a cross between Citizen Kane and Fritz Lang's 'The Big Heat.' Citizen Kane for the drama and the journalism scene; in fact, some probably don't even consider SSoS a noir, but I do since its an examination of shady characters on shady streets in an urban environment. I mention 'The Big Heat' because of the darkness and ruthlessness of the characters, but SSoS isn't quite as brutal as TBH.

The screenplay is fast and witty. I think it's a great movie (8/10). If you are interested in similar films, then I'd totally recommend a blind-buy. I do think it has good rewatchability.

As I recall it's shot 100% at night with a fair dose of on-location street scenes and it has a lot of bitterness and cynicism, but I wouldn't call it noir. The setting is right, but it lacks some of the key elements of the genre.

I'd welcome it. However, I want LEON MORIN on br as the next Meville. I know SC may control it but they should give it to Criterion.

Default Problem with Walkabout Blu-Ray Disc

Hi!
I was just watching the movie Walkabout on Criterion Blu-Ray Disc when my region free Sharp BD-HP24 started to freeze around 40 minutes into the movie. My firmware is already up-to-date. I e-mailed Jon Mulvaney about the replacement disc program that I was informed they had, but still got no answer. Do you guys think I should ask the store where I bought the disc for some help? The thing is I bought the disc while on vacation in the US, now I'm back to Brazil, so I don't know if Criterion would be willing to help me here... Any advices would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Heh, a little while after I posted that Scanavo replied:

Hello,

The product in questioning is not available until the end of April. We don’t sell less than 1000 pcs. Otherwise you have to buy from our distributor in Denver

Audio Video Distributing Inc.
3374 South Tulare Court
Denver, CO 80231 USA
Tel 1-303-751-6400

Thank you
I sent a nice e-mail to Audio Video Distributing Inc. I will let you guys know if I get a response. I have a feeling they won't sell to me unless I buy 100s or 1000s of cases, but we'll see.

There were known player compatability problems with "Walkabout" and certain players. This article on Criterion's site is from June 8, 2010. Your specific player isn't listed (24), but it appears that all of the others in the same series (BD-HP) are listed. The information is in the article for what to do, but you've already done what you can by contacting Jon Mulvaney. Now, it's a waiting game.

Or they may sell them to you for $5 for the first two and $2.50 for each one thereafter.

I would bet you could easily sell 100 of them on this site. It all depend on the price per. Honestly, I would buy 10 off you and I am sure others would be interested in multiples. Keep us posted.

I actually recently watched my Criterion DVD of Le Samourai. Upscaled very nicely, so I don't see the need for me to upgrade it anytime soon.
A blu-ray copy would be great for Melville fans and those who haven't seen it.
A very cool film

This thread has reached 1350 pages and it's become a little unwieldy.

Please discuss individual movies on individual threads, and general Criterion discussions here, from now on

yeah, it's just the warning sticker, but...

Criterioncast did an article on Hader's visit and they brought up all the facebook comments asking for a blu of Salo. The Criterioncasters say that they've heard rumors that Salo will be coming out on blu this year, just that it wouldn't have been far enough along to the point of having a copy in-house. as we've determined in the past, these guys definitely have connections and are nearly always right (personally when they're wrong i think its on purpose), so if anyone is keeping tabs on rumors and such, Salo on blu this year should find its way on your list.

How about a Criterion subforum? Sticky the main thread at the top and keep the various movies in more or less one place.

Knowing the quirks and habits of our little family here...we sure try...but like the alcoholics that we are, we always manage to find the bottle and crawl back into it.

Really? That seems a little silly, I think. As soon as a separate thread gets created for a title released by Criterion one of the moderators merges it into this thread.

If it is too "unwieldy," then I would go with octagon's suggestion of a subforum for individual releases.

Au revoir les enfants review is now up on blu-ray.com.

https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Au-re.../18899/#Review

If you have never seen this film...DO NOT read the actual review of the film, as it contains spoilers. The rest of the review is fair game.

This is currently streamable on NetFlix if you'd like to see it in advance before purchasing.

Agreed. Also, if one takes away this thread's filler (Shipping notices, cardboard v. plastic, questions with answers easily found on criterion.com) it's very manageable.

Last post on this, to not derail into a house-keeping discussion.....

I'm all for locking a "Criterion Blu-ray Release" thread in this forum, right where it is, as a sticky, with a list of covers with links to their releases (which we have now, and is great thanks to Pro-B mostly I believe)

The first post would continue to contain FAQs, Case-replacement info, contact info, etc....

A new thread could be created in the Movies/Discussions forum so discussion that wasn't Blu-ray specific, or contained things of a "Wish-list" nature, or just recent films that are screening, the happenings at Cannes, etc. etc. would all fit into the topic, and not be discouraged.

Coffee-grinder discussion still would be considered "off-topic" but nobody's perfect

I must admit, however, that I would have preferred to see either the French director's arguably best film, Le souffle au coeur (Murmur of the Heart) or his hauntingly beautiful Ascenseur pour l'échafaud (Elevator to the Gallows) get Criterion's Blu-ray treatment first.
I feel like I'm the only one that doesn't find Elevator to the Gallows to be all that great of a film. I thought it was an enjoyable film, but I found there to be too many illogical moments.

I'm sorry I'm really late to this, but this was one of those rare instances where I didn't discuss something I was completely clueless about.....

I have now watched the first 2 parts of "Carlos" thanks to Netflix-streaming

I need to watch the third still (obviously) but I heard there were people hoping Criterion would bring this out, or speculating they would, etc...

Has there been any other indications that ANYONE is prepping this for a BD release???? I will certainly pick this one up when I have the opportunity to do so.
