Yes for watching say a sporting event or something else having to look up is not natural with some of these installations. It bothers your neck. But as I previously said some rooms lack a good place for a 4K TV. If you have a fireplace at the end, chairs/couch on one side, large windows on the other side, opening into another room, some homes just aren’t conducive to entertaining with technology.

It’s not a good idea at all. It can cause permanent back/neck problems.

It may be a even bigger problem in the future with TVs like Samsung’s The Wall. How is one meant to use a lowering bracket with such displays?

Since last update my sister was taken into intensive care. I’m delighted to say she has now been moved back to the COVID ward and is making steady progress. It was incredibly worrying but her body must be stronger than we thought considering her other health issues.

Her hubby is still in intensive care but is making great progress and the doctor said he should be back on a ward soon if he continues to progress. So the week has ended much better than it began. The family feared the worst but we are now in a better frame of mind.

This is a vicious virus to people with underlying health problems, do everything you can to stay safe guys. Especially if you fall into that category.

Thanks again.
I am so happy to hear that both your sister and brother-in-law are making progress. It is wonderful news.

Well made amplifiers should last a really long time and a AVP should generate much less heat than a AVR. The initial cost for separates could be more but should be less spread over many years.

My Crown DC-300 was put into service in 1972 and still being used, Hafler DH-200 and DH-120's, Crown PS-400 put into service in 1983 and still being used except the PS-400 which is on standby. Have two Crown XLS 1000's in service but they are only 5 years old.
I could do separates and instead use a pre-amp and a multi-channel power amp or two.

The last time that I had separates was 1983; I had a Carver pre-amp, the C1, and the M1.5T power amp. I used these for 23 years before selling them and going with my now dead Denon AVR 4806.

I haven't shopped for pre-amps and power amps since then, so I have a lot to research. Thanks for giving me another rabbit hole to explore.

Recommendations are welcome from anyone; I want to be able to have at least 9 channels at no less than what my AVR was rated at, namely 140 watts per channel.

IMO, a TV must be placed at eye level. Viewing comfort is a must and is non-negotiable. I'd brick up a fireplace before I mounted a TV above one.

The chief problem with separates is your system needs a lot more room for placement, even in a rack. Then there is decent room EQ, most of these don’t offer ease of use to set that up. Way more interconnects. I also see a good AVP that end up costing as much a good AVR. Lot more thought goes with this type of setup. There is no question that components will cost more, not could be more then a AVR.

I don't mind more complication and some extra expense if the end result is worth it. Making room for one component vs. two or three is no big deal.

Edit: a precursory search indicates that I would need to double my budget, maybe even more, to go with separates. I would have to save up for far longer and I am already slumming it hard with having to use my TV's built-in speakers in the meantime; it kills the soul a little each time. I think I'm gonna stick with getting an AVR/ hot plate combo.

I think he meant pull down bracket

just like there are swivel brackets or pullout brackets.

mostly agree and more importantly needs to be centered in the field of vision ith your head in a comfortable position (hate it when you see a Tv in a corner because some designer cared about everything else first.

That being said "eye level" is a bity of an odd thing. Siting on a couch where your head is perpendicular to the ground, the display needs to be quite low. On the other hand a recliner where your head is at an angle the tv needs to be much higher up

I guess buying a new AVR takes priority now; that'll put a stop to my disc buying for awhile. It will take me some time to replace it, too, as I also have other expenses to deal with. Nothing ever breaks at a convenient time, does it?

I hate to lose this AVR as it has many legacy connections that new AVRs lack, but an AVR this old is probably not worth repairing, either.

There are two paths for you, a pre-pro + multiple channel amp affair, or some AVR. With your normal entertainment habits, it comes down to how much time do you need?

How about 2? A couple of rear shots and one front of my DIY 19" EIA racks. Have one Scythe fan blowing on the AVP with two more mounted to duct work that vents back into the media room.

Sure that isn't a SETI setup with a Dish in the backyard?

Well I do have a 1 meter dish aimed at AMC-21 satellite (PBS) mounted on the back of the house. (old photo, now have a quad, .5° LNB)

[Show spoiler]

The following were at work, the large one was a semi-fixed 10 meter Andrew’s for C band and the smaller one was 8.3 meters for Ku band and was steerable.

[Show spoiler]

For SETI use you need much larger apertures and steerable with much lower temperature (noise) front ends.

It seems Oppo is getting into the TV Market, all you really need now is Display and Sound System.

I posted this on AVS

Oppo Electronics which Oppo Digital was a independent subsidiary is making these TVs. One Plus another BBK division like Oppo Electronics introduced their TVs to India with this last year.

Oppo Electronics was the manufacturer for the Oppo players, but is this return to consumer electronics, TBD. They certainly devoted all manufacturing to producing smart phone recently, which is one of the known reasons for Oppo Digital leaving the marketplace.

While mildly interesting, I am not in the market for a new TV.

I will always need more than just a display and a surround sound system; I need a library of content on physical media. What I don't really need is overpriced internet service and lackluster streaming.
