Nothing is stopping him? Really? If he's as money hungry as people like to make out to be then SURELY he's release them to make more of the money he supposedly wants to much. Perhaps it wouldn't be commercially viable? Lucasfilm have already said that they don't own ANY prints of the original films themselves that would be good enough to release on a HD format. It would cost far too much money to track down a print and do the transfer. Would there be a big enough demand for those 3 unaltered films? No, I don't think so. They'd sell well but not as well as the current BluRay set because casual fans really couldn't care less. They've bought the Blu by now and aren't going to shell out for the films again.
Why would Lucas bother releasing them? He released them on DVD and as soon as he did people wanted them on Blu-ray. As soon as a newer format becomes available people will want them on that as well. And even if he did people would STILL find problems. People say they want the films unaltered. Yet these same people complain when lightsabers haven't been touched up or look green on the Millennium Falcon.

That's a bad sad tbh and by sad I mean pathetic. More of this "George Lucas raped my childhood" rubbish.

He thinks everything is wrong with them? What really? Re-dubbing Boba's voice was necessary for continuity and to remove a plot hole. The same with adding in the Emporer. The blinking Ewoks make them seem more real. The dug in Jaba's palace branches the two trilogies. The no also connects the trilogy but its not isolated. Its another "I have a bad feeling about this". Its the poetry Lucas constantly mentions. There are resonating beats throughout the saga. There's a Nooooo in each of the six films. are you telling me that Vader saying no, something which lasts a few seconds, ruins over 6 hours of film for you? That's pathetic and you're saying George Lucas is a whiny kid? Give me a break. Are there any more toys in your pram that you could throw out.

Grow up man.

Pal, just take off your fanboy-goggles for a moment and look at the big picture. You try so hard to justify what the guy is doing and i just dont understand how! If George Lucas mailed you a bag of shit with "Star Wars" written on it, you'd be the happiest kid alive right?! I mean, seriously?

You're the pathetic one here, because you think everything the man does is GENIUS and doesn't question anything he does. It's worshipers like you who's partially to blame for the prequels' awfulness!

...And if you think that you can justify Darth Vader's whimpy NOOOOOOO at the end of 'Jedi' (or 'Sith' for that matter) then we have nothing left to discuss.

Why didn't he just "remake" episodes 4-6 if he was that unhappy with them?

That's right, ignore all my points and go off on a rant
I'm not saying everything he's done is genius, far from it. What I AM saying is that they're HIS films and he can release them in what form HE wants regardless of other people's opinions. If it was commercially viable they would have been released by now.

I've got the OOT on DVD. Sure, it's not the best PQ in the world but I have them films and they don't really add anything to the experience. Well, some of the effects

Because they don't need to be remade. All he's done over the years is touch up the special effects and re-recorded/added in some dialogue in order to make the two trilogies fit together better. BUT HE'S NOT ALLOWED DO THAT BECAUSE THEY'RE OUR FILMS MAN!!!!! THEY'RE OURS! I TELL YA! OURS! and so on, so forth ad nauseum

It's pretty shocking quality as it's a Laser Disc port with inferior sound (and it's not even anamorphic). Why Lucas didn't restore the originals before adding CGI additions to them is completely beyond me and it goes beyond all good logic.

I'm also sure there are few fantastic quality prints of the original trilogy floating around ready and waiting to be restored.

Thumbs up

George Lucas has promised he's not going to mess with the Star Wars movies anymore (after 3D-ing them, that is) and in fact might not even make any more films at all. He whined:

What about the live action series he's planning to film in Sydney, my home town. Isn't still being made

I honestly think people's perception of him would change in an instant but there will be clowns who'll be waving 'WE WON!' flags in his face if and when he relents instead of just saying 'Thank you this means so much.'
The trouble is, it's been 15 years since the SEs were released (give or take a few months) and that's a looooooong time for people to harbour the sort of hatred that's constantly directed at Lucas. It's become a way of life for most of the inhabitants of the internets and they simply won't be able to give it up, not least while the prequels and Indy IV still exist; there will always be a reason for people to hate on George Lucas.

It's sad when a filmmaker who's got box office returns into the billions is flat-out ignored by the studios, but Lucas is a victim of his own success, becoming so insulated that he persisted with his goofy style to the point where the whole goddamned world got sick of it. Dude needs to disappear, get out of the limelight, and reflect on what made him so powerful in the first place. But first....Episode I in 3D!!!!!

If I'm honest, I expected him to continually tweak the original trilogy until the day he dies. Hell, I even thought that he left instructions in his will for his kids to tweak after he kicks the bucket!
I didn't notice Billz, I tend to speed read people's posts. You beat me too it

That's still several years away (working title is Star Wars: Underworld) and last I heard it'll be done in Eastern Europe not Sydney.

Aren't you equally guilty of wearing fanboy goggles, but with a perspective from the other extreme?

The comments about Lucas retiring are nothing new, he's been saying he's going to focus on making more personal projects for a few years now. The problem is, Star Wars and Indy keep getting in the way. It's only receiving more press coverage now because of the release of Red Tails.

It's just about time that all the whiny, self obsessed fan boys who think they have a right to dictate how Star Wars is released and marketed don't retire, because I've got news for you - you don't!

Maybe he should have retired before making the prequels...

I find that hard to belive he's a old man who says something then later forgets about it .

I Still give him credit for giving star wars for nearly 40 years including 3D

There are 3, 2 hour bootleg documentaries. One for each film of the OT. All 3 are professionally done by the same person and contain material straight from 'Lucasfilm'.
Well worth a look if you liked 'Empire of Dreams'.

I know what I'd like to start with my they didn't include it.

"Empire of Dreams" which was on the OT DVD boxset bonus disc.

Not as good as that but I'd start with the OT documentaries on Disc 3

Empire of Dreams is here on YouTube
