I do not foresee ever selling my Oppo 203.

My concerns with all of the Panny's (420, 820, 9000) is that I have read many times that they do a poor job with DVD upscaling and I still own a lot of DVDs.

I also read that their main advantage is their ability to monkey with tone mapping, but the need for that feature lies primarily with projector owners. A TV with decent tone mapping does not really need that feature and minus this the Panny's are nothing remarkable.

If I am wrong about these things I will gladly consider adding a Panny as a second player someday. At the moment, I would rather pay ebay prices for another Oppo 203 than to buy a Panny.

I am not doubting your findings, but curious what is better with the Panasonic.

Hmmmm those Panasonic just don’t have resale value, so sad.

Rather then start this Oppo vs Panasonic debate again. Here's his original reason.

Be at peace with what you use. The Pandemic really messed up this industry for people needing something other then a TV.

Projector owner here,

Love my Panasonic UB420. It’s perfect for me.

Never owned an Oppo but some of my friends do. I respect the Oppo players quality but I don’t have a use for one myself and I would not buy a used one.

I don’t care if my UB420 doesn’t have a good resale value because I would never sell it. If I upgraded to a higher end Panasonic for some reason (build quality for example though the UB420 does a perfect job anyhow) I would keep my current player as a spare.

I have no plans to sell my Oppo, but was curious why he thinks the Panny is better. Thanks for digging up the answer.

More PS5 4K Movie Essentials

Gamers have a great holiday season to look forward to this year! If you have to stay home better get some PS5 4K Movie Essentials. Prepare for a wave of new UHD player owners.

Depending on how well it does with UHD, I may pick up a PS5. I know it does the AppleTV app so I could repurpose my ATV4K to another room and simplify my overall setup. It plays PS4 games so I could gift my PS4 to my kids. Eventually it’s going to make all too much sense to own one.

Sony for the win !

There’s even an economy version of the PS5 without the ability to play discs for steaming cheapskates who hate AV Quality.

Same here, very curious how well (or bad) it does as a media player and/or streaming player.

I wasn't trying to start a "who makes the best 4K disc player" debate; I was just marveling at the prices that Oppo players continue to command. I know of no other brand of player with that kind of enduring appeal.

I was up until 5 AM playing video games with one of my friends in New Zealand (6 hour time difference between us), so I expect to be extra incoherent all afternoon until my caffeine infusion takes hold.

Do you know any other brand that you can get reasonable maintenance service, while being fully CI remote controlled, great remote, supports a large amount of video/audio codecs/file formats even serve as a front end for a NAS or Room setup. Easily modified for regional free operation using mods. Exceptional build and product life qualities. Even a HDMI input for other sources. It was also sold previously in many countries. Even if Oppo Digital closed down, the parent company Oppo Electronics is very well off and continues maintenance services. Cherished by both videophiles/audiophiles.

Indeed. Have followed media players for many years and to this day none, IMHO, best the Oppo except most can play ISO's.

Wow! It took two days for me to be called a troll on AVS Forum. I used to post occasionally awhile ago, but left because there were too many clowns on it. I figured I would try it again, but I see the clowns have multiplied.

That’s sad. I have often asked myself why I stopped posting there. I still read a bit there and post on occasion.

Back in 1999, AVS Forum was a major source of information and inspiration for me. Things have changed a lot over the last twenty years but I imagine there are still great people there and good moderators.

Same here and I agree that there are some good folks there. But there are also people on the site with hidden agendas.

Just report them when appropriate. AVS doesn't like problematic types anymore than any forum.

Post is gone now BTW

Amongst some idiots, it has become a word to just throw around when someone disagrees with their viewpoint. I have seen it on the Blu-ray forum to a lesser degree from time to time.

You are far from a troll, so don’t let it get to you.

Netflix has another rare (that good) series entitled the Queens Gambit. The Queen's Gambit review - Robert Ebert.com

Walter Tevis also wrote The Hustler, and the Color of Money, but for some people the Queens Gambit from him is a favorite, just nice to see it brought to the screen as well. Period Music is good also. Hope it comes out on Blu-ray also.
