Walter Tevis also wrote The Hustler, and the Color of Money, but for some people the Queens Gambit from him is a favorite, just nice to see it brought to the screen as well. Period Music is good also. Hope it comes out on Blu-ray also.
I'll probably watch it at some point this week. Scott Frank adapted this and he rocks.

I hope it goes to Blu too. I have Netflix’s Stranger Things on UHD BD. I can use my neighbors password to check it out but if it’s good enough hopefully it gets the upgrade to disc.

Anti pirate measures on Lionsgate discs result in audio drop outs on the Oppo players.

(Unless you back up the content and serve it over the network and contribute to the problems of people who would rather play by the rules.)

This is just a heads up for anyone thinking of trying to get one of these. Without software updates, they will only get less usable.

Nothing is perfect. Hopefully Oppo can come back and make new players.

First HDMI 2.1 receivers reportedly have faulty HDMI 2.1 chip

Quote:
Next-generation AV receivers from Denon, Marantz, and Yamaha have a faulty HDMI 2.1 chip and the problem may not be fixable via firmware, according to a report by Heise.de.

In recent months, Denon, Marantz, and Yamaha have announced or launched receivers with HDMI 2.1 pass-through and features. HDMI 2.1 is required if you want to pass-though PS5 or Xbox Series X's highest quality video signals (4K120 with HDR, 8K60) through a receiver.

German magazine Heise (or c't magazine) has carried out testing in combination with Xbox Series X and the Nvidia RTX-3080 graphics card. It concluded that the HDMI 2.1 chip in the receivers is faulty, resulting in a black screen when trying to process 4K120 with HDR and 8K60 signals.

All HDMI 2.1 receivers currently source the HDMI 2.1 chip from Panasonic Solutions (now owned by Nuvoton Technology). Heise ascribes it to a known bug in the chip that may not be fixable via firmware.

I have not noticed any audio dropouts with my Lionsgate discs when played with either my very old Oppo 93 or my newer Oppo 203; can you be more specific as to which titles?

Well, watching that video will save me a substantial amount of money (along with the confirmation of it contained in Lee's post). I am no longer considering any of the 2020 AVR models that boast of having this HDMI 2.1 capability. The 2018 and 2019 models are on sale and they do not have bad HDMI chips or faulty capacitors.

This news underscores how lax quality control has become. Hardware manufacturers seem to think that consumers want to spend thousands of dollars to be their damn beta testers.

Yeah, good thing Onkyo /Pioneer / Elite won’t be releasing their 2.1 receivers until June 2021.

Their new AVR releases might be delayed as they may have been planning to use these same problematic HDMI 2.1 chips from Nuvoton.

In the video that John posted the commentator does not believe that there will be corrected HDMI 2.1 chips available until well into 2021 and that new AVRs with the corrected HDMI 2.1 chips won't be available until at least 2022.

It is my understanding also that Onkyo/Pioneer/Elite are all in deep financial trouble; I am not sure that I would want to buy anything from a company that may be on the brink of ruin.

In light of all this HDMI 2.1 hullabaloo, my leading AVR contender at the moment is the Marantz SR8012. The SR8012 is an 11.2 channel AVR with 205 watts per channel whereas its successor, the SR8015, is 140 watts per channel.

The brand new SR8015 provides less power, has a bad HDMI 2.1 chip, and costs $700 more; what a deal!

What a crappy year. Just waiting for the PS5 to be faulty to cap it all.

Shame we can’t hibernate, would have just skipped this year.

I no longer buy first generations of new consoles; I wait to see if there are serious complaints from the eager early adopters and sometimes the later generations include improvements or offer better bundles. Look at how many iterations of the PS3 there were?

New Year's Eve this year won't see many tears shed for the departure of evil 2020.

I was fine last gen but I’m considering waiting until next December to be honest. Got loads of stuff VR wise to play anyway. At least 20 new games.

I read about it in the Requiem for a Dream 4K thread. It’s playlist obfuscation but during playback goes like seemless branching only without the seemless part.
