An excellent vid on Destiny, and one of the main reasons I quit playing. Definitely very well researched info and not your typical F bungie type rant. Not to mention he was a staple on the Destiny subreddit, and did some major sherpa work on Trials with people. Definitely worth a watch and share.

I did not watch the whole thing; it's obvious where it's going within a few minutes. We learned about Pavlovian conditioning in junior high school, and anyone else who did should have recognized this about Destiny from the outset. It's a slot machine where time is your token. And the video essay is not entirely accurate. Destiny rewards are, generally speaking, issued at fixed points in the game, not random points, and often a fixed number of times per week or day...like a slot machine...or a lottery.
This guy worries too much about how others waste their own time. about 40,000 years were wasted watching the Super Bowl. |

But if you play videogames just for rewards and trophies, it's not the developers fault that you earned all of them and want to move on. I play for camaraderie and sheer enjoyment while living in the moment. I will continue to play Destiny because I still enjoy the actual gameplay itself. I guess I was just born in a different era when folks played these games simply to pass the time and have fun for a bit before returning to reality. |

I disagree with some of the things he says in that video. The game play IS fun, I remember making comments about enjoying simply running around shooting things on earth, in fact I would get distracted often and forget what I was even doing. So yeah, the game was fun for me.
Also, I will never believe everything is random and everyone has the same chances as everyone else, every time. That's crap, there are factors there that determine when you get certain items, like the Ghorn. This is ultimately what killed the game for me, I'm fine with set rewards or random, but I am NOT fine with being purposely screwed with. Look at how many people went months and 1,000's of hours waiting for a weapon, then when they got it, it drops weekly, lol. That being said, of course it's designed to keep you coming back, there was never any doubt about that. Conspiracy theories aside, simply making everything team oriented keeps you coming back to play with friends, why do you think everything has a multiplayer now? |

Yeah he clearly states the gameplay is fun and spot on. What turned me off was this was the first game that built up to a point where I actually had a checklist of things I "had" to do that occupied the entire week. Nightfalls on Tuesday, Raids on Wednesdays, Weekly's on Thursdays, Eris/99 bounties, Daily heroics, IB, etc. The game actually became a chore, even though the actual play was fun with friends.
Also, I must have done well over 50 Crota hard completions, never got the Crux. I killed over 500 of the praying Hive knights, never got the drop either (I even forgot what that drop was called). What really got me sour was after each new expansion, you were allowed less and less to do unless you kept buying the new stuff. I'm all for adding new things but taking things away? So I bought TDB and HOW, but never bought TTK. It will take something seriously amazing to get me to buy Destiny 2. Not because I didn't like Destiny 1, but because their business model doesn't sit right with me. Also, the guy in the video made a great point about them resetting all our progress with each expansion to lock us into another 3 hour/day marathon. I recently saw that Bungie is sending out surveys on why ppl have left Destiny, man I would have loved to get one of those. The irony is they clearly know because they are very into the social scene with their game, but continue to price gouge on stupid content and for some reason refuse to come out and give players a scope of what's still to come. I mean is there even an outline for what is coming after the Crimson love event? |

Not being able to partner up with ransoms for raids killed destiny for me. Flat out, it's a design choice made to screw over the player. If real mmos like WoW and FF14 can let me randomly play raids with up to 40 or more people, with mechanics in their games that are FAR more complex than the "shoot the guy a lot and sometimes use your specials" that is destiny, than I don't buy Bungies "team work is important" junk. It's so that you become a shill to get your friends to buy the game, and Bungie sells even more copies. Not because of team work.

If running raids using DestinyLFG was a pain in the ass -
I can't imagine running raids with a group of 6 people who don't know one another AT ALL or have discussed any sort of prerequisites. Would make raiding a THOUSAND times more frustrating than it was (I'm retired). Matchmaking couldn't be any easier with the PLETHORA of online options available to you guys to find a fireteam. I always grew tired of that excuse. You guys are even posting in a FORUM that has its LARGEST thread dedicated to the people who play this game and are more than welcoming. But hey, it's easier to say Bungie's fault, right? "Can't believe I have to go ONLINE to find people to play with" has to be the laziest excuse I've ever read. ::waves to the old timers, returns back to the home theater and 4K subforums:: |

The thing I hate about having to use LFG is the time it takes and the amount of stuck up SOBs there are that will only run with you if you have this or that or are a certain level. Kills it for me, at least if there was in game matchmaking I can just hit a button and everything is done for me and I don't have to sell myself to random people in the hopes they approve of me.
If games like FFXIV can offer matchmaking for their raids which are a lot more complicated than Destiny's then there's no reason not to have it here. I think they will add it eventually, they are surveying people to find out why they quit playing so they know they have a bit of trouble right now, and no one but the dedicated hardcore are going to use LFGs to keep raiding it's just too much hard work for lazy people. |

Don't give a shit how many options there are online to find players, don't care if it takes seconds to message someone on a LFG site, it's stupid. No game should make you go outside of it to set up matches, that's ass backwards. The existence of LFG sites is proof Destiny failed matchmaking.
