It is not just collectors that shop online. Online shopping is not some insider secret only known to enthusiasts. The pandemic has caused lots of people to discover the convenience of online shopping across a wider range of merchandise categories and many of them will keep shopping this way long after the plague subsides.

There have been very few brand new titles (non-catalog) released this year and these are the titles that stores allocate the most retail space to display. New hit movies have always been the driving force behind disc sales. Without such brand new titles, they have little to display, so it should come as no surprise that they are re-purposing that retail space for merchandise that they do have.

Well, you just resolved your own statement, as collectors alone cannot support a mass-market, and the same is certainly true for those who only purchase during sales. The volume and related profit is not sufficient to maintain warehouse and shelf space, not mention returns, loss and theft.

So, no more brick and mortar for any titles other than new releases from the majors, combined with no new UHD players, just consoles.

The only question now is how long will the micro-market last?

I'm cautiously optimistic. The big wild card is 8K streaming with AI from Apple, Disney, LG and others.

When, not if, that hits, well...
I didn’t say collectors alone. You posted that comment and link in a HT enthusiasts forum. That’s our point of view.

Are you seriously suggesting that this behaviour hasn’t filtered down to the average family now? One click and birthday, Christmas presents are sorted. Stores of all kinds are dying, the high street is dying, the government are trying to hit online ordering with a delivery tax in the U.K. but it won’t save the high street.

My first online orders were from Play.com. That’s was at the dawn of DVD. I bought my VHS titles in a much loved and missed store name ‘Woolworths’ in the U.K.

8K content right now is a pipe dream. I am not aware of any studio planning 8K encodes for any distribution method. Extremely few people own 8K displays; there's just no appreciable demand at this point for 8K content.

Hell, even on this forum many of our members feel (wrongly) that 4K is just hype offering very little improvement over 1080p SDR content to justify the cost of 4K capability. How much less excited will they be for the slight incremental improvement offered by 8K which only offers increased resolution as far as movies are concerned and that requires a very large screen to even notice.

8K is for gamers and maybe someday for sports fans. Extremely compressed 8K streaming would negate most of 8K's at best marginal improvements anyways.

The gunfire will test your systems dynamic range. The DP was none other than Roger Deakins, IMHO some shots are suitable for framing.

Anyone that is not aware of the big push by Best Buy, Target and Walmart to up their online sales must be living under a very large rock.

Most of the people that I know that have seen The Irishman found it to be overlong and rather dull. I have yet to watch it because I have not heard much to recommend it.

Obviously, you liked it enough to buy it, and on disc no less, so for that.

Open question to all: how many of you liked this movie enough to buy it?

Not for me. IMHO, not in the same league as Good Fellas and The Departed. Also really like Hugo in 3D.

I am looking at the Marantz AV7705 11.2 channel pre-amp and the Marantz MM8077 seven channel power amp for starters with the goal of adding more power amps over time until I reach the full capability of that pre-amp.

I still have not settled upon a subwoofer beyond a budget amount as that takes a back seat to getting the pre-amp and power amp first.

I was disappointed with it but it is by no means bad. Not Scorcese's best but not his worst either. I will pick up the disc to support Netflix releasing more content on disc.

I can understand buying it for that reason and I will likely do the same at some point. It would have been nice to hear that people really liked the movie, though.

Just went with one title from the B&N sale - Ghost Dog on BD.

Amazon is also matching them with a lot of CC titles along with some Arrow Video titles at 50% off. Target also has a B2G1 sale going until tomorrow on Movies, Music, and Books

FYI

I think it was awesome and I've watched it 3-4 times since its release. It was on my Top-10 of 2019. I really hate that there is no 4K disc of it, but the Netflix 4K feed is fantastic and I don't have to go out of pocket.

Those should serve you well for many years to come.

These better boxes do tend to be pricey. Right now I am looking to procure a Lumagen Radiance Pro 4444 (one outlet here). Waiting another year in hopes JVC will update some of their projectors or their is a native UHD res DLP based projector released that does 3D.

News Flash guys Movie Theaters are not coming back anytime soon, and if they do they will be a lot different. So if you say Discs are dependent on Theaters, you have a long wait. I saw The Irishman months ago on Netflix, liked it now the Limited Series to see is Queen's Gambit which is very good. So some of you guys are missing out on a lot of good Movies and TV Shows waiting for Discs. The prices are not going up, but are the Studios making their Profit Margins. I doubt it because the Disc Sales are going down.

Here is a good YouTube on the Charts for Movies by Dan Murrell:
