I don't believe anyone has ever made a complete list. And I wouldn't be able to make one as I didn't start watching the show until season 6 was airing and at that time I didn't have a computer or anything to record the episodes. All I have to go by are the originally released US DVDs, and from watching reruns I've found out that those also have missing footage.

Check the wiki page. It was updated some time ago with my notes. However, they refer to the US discs. There are so many different versions from other countries that I can't keep track.

Have been chatting tonight with a couple of the cameramen who worked on the original 8 seasons of W&G. I was asking them about the filming of the show and whether it was actually filmed or recorded onto tape.

Here's the answer I got from them:
Quote:
All of the original Will & Grace was shot on film, 2000' loads in giant Panavision magazines, threaded into Panavision FILM cameras. Nothing was shot on tape. The shows were edited digitally using Final Cut
Quote:
The first 8 seasons were shot on 35mm Eastman Kodak Film with four Panaflex cameras.
Processed, and transferred to tape.
As far as editing is concerned, it was never done on film.
From that, we now know that the show was definitely shot on film and could definitely get a full blu-ray release, if that film still exists.

Where the confusion comes into play is how it was edited. If it was not done on film and done on final cut, then that might explain the SD masters. I don't know much about the history of editing back then and how it might have been done.

Food for thought...

So many possibilities of what could've happened to the episodes going through my head with that information.

In this behind the cameras from season 1 you can actually see the film on the cameras, so they could re-format seasons 1 and 2 to widescreen as they did with the rest of them...

Of course. The question is (as I said above) how was it edited? If they edited it on tape, then they'll have to go back to the film and re-edit from the masters. And the question is if those masters still exist. If they edited on film, it's just a question of re-scanning. They clearly don't have new masters. However, it still doesn't make sense that they're able to find widescreen masters for 3-8. And why was 3 seemingly "just discovered?" I don't get ANY of this.

I tried emailing several of the editors on the show from the early years and never heard back from any of them, unfortunately

Almost every American shows (shot on film) started to shoot in widescreen around 1994 anyway, while framing for 4:3. But it's only in the late 90s that they started to make the final SD master in 16:9 as well. I guess Will & Grace only started doing that with season 3. Although it's a little surprising, 2000 is very late compared to other shows.

But in that case the only way to have s1 & 2 in widescreen would be to remaster them from to original film.

My preference however would be a 4:3 HD remaster, same for Friends & Frasier. I prefer widescreen for dramas (even when they're framed fro 4:3 first), but sitcoms like these have so much more dead-space in widescreen, it bothers me a lot more.

I agree with you but, truth be told, I'll be happy with ANY version in HD and I don't think we'll be getting anything anytime soon, unfortunately

That said, I'm not totally giving up on a 16x9 S1&2 just yet. Since all of these have been showing up in reverse order, it's entirely possible that 1/2 may still be around. However, regardless, they all still seem to be SD masters which makes no sense. I'd give up 16x9 for the complete episodes as they originally aired.

And speaking of which, in case anyone wants to cross-reference what's missing from their digital/DVD sets, I did these two articles for the best W&G site out there...and it's been there since the beginning.

Good information about the DVDs, although I own the US individual season 2 boxed set and the last episode (Ben? Her?) is not split, it is the full lenght 40 minutes episode.

Apparently they reissued that set back then in order to fix disc 4 which as I heard, had the episodes out of order... So I guess I got the reissued one

I'm starting to think we'll never get seasons 5-8 on Digital in the US or Canada. Seems like there's a licensing issue, like Universal thought it was too expensive to pay for every season.

There's more than just distribution licensing they have to pay for. Any name brand that they say, logo they show, music they play etc. they have to pay for. And seeing as how they don't seem to want to remaster the show from the ground up I don't see them going through every master they have at the moment and changing those things.

The show is owned worldwide by the same company. I'm not understanding your logic.

The series went up on Hulu this morning. Season 7 is missing (hopefully it will be fixed soon) and the supersized episodes I checked out were syndicated cuts. That was expected even though I had a little hope they wouldn't be.

Here's a theory: maybe they made the HULU deal just as these were going to be released to digital. OR a part of that deal was that only the first 4 seasons would be released now and the rest would be exclusive to HULU (and, of course, NBC, who owns them outright). Just a thought...

I can only comment on season 1 (almost into season 2), but season 1 is 4:3. With really, really crappy encoding.

Hulu is the worst - no surround sound on anything and super low bitrates.
