Yes Man - This is sort of a new age Liar Liar but not quite as good. I enjoyed watching this film as I havnt really been a big Jim Carrey fan over the last 10 years or so. Not really lough out loud funny but it has its moments and it kept my attention. Overall I would say 3.5/5 Got Em!!

Film: 7.5/10 Good film, very well done. Overall, a pretty good discussion of faith and what faith really means. My only gripe was the filmmakers went WAAAAAY overboard on casting Rob Lowe and that other blonde guy as the religious kooks. Their scenes looked like an SNL skit, which really stuck out like a sore thumb, when surrounded by otherwise great drama scenes with Foster and McConaghey. A bit toned down would have been better IMO. McConaghey saved the day in that dept. Overall, very good film. PQ = 4/5 (perhaps room for improvement; detail a bit lacking; a tad inconsistent, but otherwise very good) AQ = 4/5 (very little use of surrounds, but when they were used, they were adequate, just not as good as they could have been for a film of this type) |

Hard to keep up with this thread on my hours. The last 2 weeks:
10.1.10 Code Unknown 2000 Michael Haneke 10.1.10 Bad Boy Bubby 1993 Rolf de Heer 11.1.10 Raging Bull 1980 Martin Scorsese 12.1.10 Paranormal Activity 2007 Oren Peli 13.1.10 Duplicity 2009 Tony Gilroy 14.1.10 Moon 2009 Duncan Jones 16.1.10 Snatch 2000 Guy Ritchie 16.1.10 The Hangover 2009 Todd Phillips 17.1.10 Public Enemies 2009 Michael Mann 23.1.10 Inland Empire 2006 David Lynch 23.1.10 Pusher 1996 Nicolas Winding Refn 24.1.10 Ploy 2007 Pen-Ek Ratanaruang 25.1.00 Che: The Argentine 2007 Steven Soderberg 26.1.00 The Fountain 2006 Darren Aronofsky The better ones: Moon: more movies need to be like this. Bad Boy Bubby, a similar premise to Being There but a much more warped film of what happens to somebody that wonders out into the world for the first time after being sheltered, confined and abused for 30+ years Pusher: follows a drug pusher around for 1 week where everything is going wrong. Ploy: Not the typical Thai film that usually focus on Mauy Thai fighting or ghost stories. More a drama between a husband and wife that are forced to confront their feelings after their marriage has gone stale and the events that follow. Snatch.. well, saw it before. stilll great |

The Pusher Trilogy is great. Parts I and III are the best ones and II is really good, but not as good as the 1st and 3rd.
Che I & II 9.5/10 An extremely well made and beautiful film and an outstanding performance by Benicio Del Toro. Sodebergh is on top of his game here. It's easily his best movie since Traffic and probably a little bit better. It's also one of the best biopics I have seen since Malcolm X. I do have a major gripe though. There should have been three parts to this movie. I felt I watched the beginning and the end of a movie and the middle part was completely left out. Sodebergh should have made another movie following the events after taking over Havana. I would give Parts I and II a 10/10, but have to lower it due to the lack of an complete timeline. Sodebergh in the extras even admits that he thinks he should have done another several hours to Che. Hopefully he goes back and starts filming again. There is no reason he can't. As always, Criterion has done it again with a knockout blu-ray. An excellent and somewhat incomplete biopic is definitely recommended not just to watch, but to also add to your ever growing blu ray collection. |

Garden State (DVD) 9/10
I hadn't seen Garden State in a few years, so I decided to make it my Sunday night feature. It's just as good as I remembered it. Great story, good acting (especially Natalie Portman), an overall great indie movie. If you've not seen it, definitely check it out! Not available on blu-ray though. |
