The funny thing is, it's not just about changes to Star Wars. I know they like to say it is but most "film" fans did not like changes to E.T. or any other film without providing the original film. I love how Spielberg releases his versions, Scott with Blade Runner, or Gillam with Brazil etc. but we have choices. Call this the Complete Saga without all versions as well as extras is a crying shame. No Empire of Dreams in the set...a travesty.

Like a fan said in The People vs. George Lucas documentary, "There's something about our love for Star Wars that is different from our love for other things."

You are kidding right? I mean not really...really? If so this would be the first SW fan I have ever met with that point of view. As much as I disagree with it it is his right to like what he likes.

Okay. So why won't Lucas put the OUT on the Blu-Ray set? Doesn't he know that the SEs suck??

You have the right to freedom of speech.

I don't understand. Lets say you didn't think the Dark Knight was that great, because it was too long (you'd be right, but anyway). So if you say 'the film might be better if it were shorter' - that's just completely beyond the pale? Because you're making an artistic suggestion, or hypothetically thinking of the way in which the film may have worked better for you? People do this the whole time, I don't see why that is so intrinsically wrong about doing that. OK, an artist has a right to make art, everyone else has the right to criticise what they've done in whatever way they see fit, and that criticism is not invalidated just because they aren't the creators. Your view of criticism seems incredibly limited.

Jar Jar Binks is indeed awesome. I only wish I could afford the lifesize statue for my collection.

And yeah, Maul is incredibly overrated. Much like Boba Fett. I'm glad he doesn't have a large part and was killed off in E1.

Not accurate. For instance, I prefer "You're lucky you don't taste very good" to "You're lucky you got out of there". But I don't feel the need to rant and rave and stamp my feet while saying that Lucas must restore the original line of dialogue to satisfy me. That would be ridiculous.

And I have fine taste in movies. I just don't share the same taste as you do.

At the very least, something like that would be more productive than rambling on a message board which Lucas will probably never see.

This whole 'artistic freedom' bit is a strawman and not a particularly good one at that.
How so? The truth of the matter, whether anyone else likes it or not, is that "Star Wars" belongs to George Lucas, period. He is the one who thought it up, and he maintains complete creative control over how they are made, produced, and released. As such, he has every right to do what he wants with them, regardless of anyone else's opinion.

Consumers are expressing a preference, and that most definitely is 'our place'.
There's a fine line, between "expressing a preference", and bashing folks who don't see things your way. If you don't like what Lucas has chosen to do with his movies, then don't buy the set when it comes out. If he changes his mind and releases the UOT someday, that's his choice, and his alone. So, you can either make your comments in a place where it will actually make a difference, or you can continue around here, which only fuels the circular discussion...make your call.

It's a strawman because nobody is claiming otherwise.

Everytime people say 'they're his movies, he can do what he wants' they're knocking down an argument absolutely nobody is making.

That's a strawman.

If you really believe that he has every right to do as he wants with his movies...then let him do it, and quit complaining about him not doing things your way. If you've sent your views to Lucasfilm, then you've made your point known, to the right people...anything else is just redundancy run amok.
