I lucked out and timed it perfectly when I skipped the scene.
If you're buying this, you might as well see it uncut at least once...

There is no censored slip. There is a reversible cover by Melton, uncensored boob version on one side and censored on the other :

I did see the uncut version when I previously watched the film. I just skipped the turtle scene, as I'm very fond of turtles and I didn't want to see that.

Wait, so the slip is just the uncensored boob version? Damn, they're not going to sell that in any of the stores around here. I'll just have to order it online.

Nah, the slip cover is the black one posted above yours and the reversible cover is the uncensored rick melton one with the tits.

I saw this movie in 99 when i was 17 after hearing so much about it in magazines and the internet when Blair Witch hype was there, i rented it from one of my city's local video stores and it shocked the hell out of me.

It was a devastating experience no doubt and shocked my nerves, i did felt physically sick with the real animal killing scenes especially the turtle as i later found out they were actually killed. I'm no animal rights person nor am i a vegetarian but killing animals for real on film just because someone is a dumb filmmaker without a decent make-up effects budget is wrong.

Despite the animal stuff, i thought the film was excellent and unique as it was the film that inspired Blair Witch and the grandfather of the found footage genre pictures.

However this new blu-ray should look good in it's new HD restoration making the film look better than ever.

So that black cover is actually the slip cover to this set? Are all copies going to have that?

Yes, and yes.

Below are the details along with the censored (reversible) cover :

I wonder if this is the same transfer as the UK Shameless release?

As an owner of the Shameless release, I wonder the same.

It's not the same transfer as the Shameless release. It's a new restoration by Grindhouse, who always do their own transfers.

I'll take this one since it's an easy one. Basically, Grindhouse and Shameless are DIFFERENT companies. Grindhouse RESTORES films, Shameless does not.

Regarding the animal violence, yes, it's sickening. But I have NEVER seen so many people complaining about it as they are now. I don't remember anyone complaining about those scenes when the film came out and after it was released on home video in the 80's. Now it seems like everybody's jumping on the let's-trash-this-film bandwagon. This says a lot about this overly-PC generation

Note: For the record, I find the animal violence in this film truly shocking. But I regard this film as one of the best films of it's kind ever made.

I don't want to derail the thread or anything, but I just wanted to point one thing out: the internet didn't exist in the '80s. I'm sure the folks who actually saw the film--and knew the animal killings were real--did complain or whatever back in the day. They simply didn't have a public forum like this to voice their displeasure.

Anyway, back on topic....When are some reviews gonna start rolling in?

The animal violence is sickening, but it is a really good film that is hard to balance out. I suppose you have to look at it as a film of it's time, that I am sure would be done differently if money and tech were available.

The internet didn't exist until Al Gore invented it in 1992

But seriously, there were tons of horror mags back in the day and newsletters where people wrote in and voiced their opinions. I must've read or subscribed to at least 5 or 6 magazines and the section I always went to first was the letters section. I never saw the level of outcry that there is today. I just think the people who are the most vocal against the animal cruelty stuff are the younger generation not weaned on this type of film. People who grew up watching these movies didn't seem to have a problem (or at least weren't as vocal about it).

A telling sign would be the critic reviews when the movie was released. I have actually never looked into those, but I will do some thorough research after viewing the film for the first time when I pick up this Blu-ray. This certainly seems like a movie, while maybe not complex, has a lot to talk about and discuss.

Well, CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST never had a video release in the 80's in the US. I worked in a video distributor's acquisition department in the mid to late 80's, and I vividly remember the producer's rep for the film at the time saying that no US label wanted to touch that particular cannibal film as it "was too real". At that time, I hadn't even seen the film so I wasn't sure what "too real" meant, and it was hard to see because it was basically an underground release, playing in fleapit theaters only (if even that), not playing at any respectable theater. I remember Chas Balun promoting the film in his Deep Red magazine and I finally saw it on bootleg in 1991 or so, and the animal violence was hard to stomach then. And as others have said, for many years it had basically been a bootleged, hard-to-see film, until that overseas laserdisc in the early 2000's, and then various overseas DVD releases, etc. But in the fanzines previously, people did discuss the animal violence, but there just wasn't a sounding board as today with the internet. Even if a fanzine got 2000 letters complaining about the film's animal violence, they surely would only print one letter at most anyway. With the internet today, every single voice can be heard. And Grindhouse's DVD was the first OFFICIAL release of the film on any format in the US, and the internet was there to hear every voice at that time as so many new viewers finally got to see the film.

Also, remember, even Elvira refused to host the Thriller Video release of MAKE THEM DIE SLOWLY (as well as BURIED ALIVE) in the 80's, due to the animal violence as well as the other gore. So there were people appalled at the time by this kind of stuff, it was just behind-the-scenes back then.

I personally prefer not to see the animal violence, but I don't think it's worthy of particular outrage. Obviously I'd prefer it had been done differently, but the animals killed were used as food, so I don't see it as that big of a deal. All the animals we eat were killed. It just wasn't filmed.

One of those theaters was the "Town Theater" in Baltimore, MD... while I wasn't even alive at the time (missed it by a year of the '84 US release), I have a local TV spot of the film on VHS. It ends with the local voiceover guy saying "Starts this Friday at the Town Theater. Due to graphic scenes of violence, no one under 17 will be admitted."

I refuse to watch animal torture! Human violence is ok but not animal abuse.
