I could, but it's not worth it at Aniplex prices and I know plenty people feel the same. I'd be fine with a Funi release.

And I disagree, you're being way too harsh. I own Cowboy Bebop and it was a freaking GREAT release! And why don't movies count? You're just cherrypicking now.

All you really need is MKVtoolnix, It's mostly a drag and drop operation after that except setting specs on the different streams to make sure players read the streams right (if they don't detect them correctly anyway).

The most painful part is timing the subs. That can be quite tedious. Doing it for a 2 hour movie is one thing; for a 26+ episode anime series, you'll have no hair left - not to mention you'll be so sick of the seeing the anime in little bit's and pieces 4000 times, that you'll never want to watch it ever again.

I have already seen the Evangelion series so many times that I should be sick of it, but the prospect of poring over it for hours on end and getting to go over every little subtitle detail actually excites me. I guess this is the part of being a fan where you know you are in too deep.

Another thing to consider is that the scene-timing between different various masters can often be different by a couple of frames per cut, which means that re-using subs from the US "Platinum" release may not work without tweaking.

Yeah and then when you finally feel relaxed enough to try sit down and just watch it, you are forever picking faults and want to go tweak it again. It is so damn hard.

I wonder if it would be easier if you had better, professional tools? Part of what made it so hard was having to use various bits and pieces and so much effort to get from one stage to the other, and finally then mastering, the actual loop for the entire process for even a minor change was so excruciating and long winded. And that was even without recoding the video and audio, just re-muxing. I was doing mine to just remuxed AVCHD. I wasn't re-compressing.

It does kind of ruin it.

I wish you could get blu ray players that allowed either on the fly addition of subtitles, or at the very least, the ability to change subtitle presentation (particularly font, color, opacity and position, to deal with stuff like those rubbish sentia subs).

If ANYTHING is worth Aniplex prices, it's Eva. It's the single best anime TV series ever. One of the finest works of fiction in the world. Is that really not worth a slightly more expensive release?

Don't think FUNi won't milk the license either. They won't be throwing dirt cheap releases after us like they did with Bebop. And they won't make a good release no matter how expensive.

If the eps are separate titles then I don't see a problem. The timing from the DVD subs should match. Whether one can find subs lifted from an official release is a different matter entirely, and if the Blu-rays have only one title, combining them would be a drag.

I'd get the Japanese release if it had subs...

It never seems to be that easy in reality. In theory it should be, but a blu ray vs an interlaced NTSC source doesn't quite line up. I'm not sure the frame rates are quite the same (isn't one 24 hz vs 23.97 or something?). At any rate subs taken from my NTSC DVDs and overlayed onto my 1080p blu ray did not line up timing wise. Timing on other natural breaks in the shows also varies, such as after opening credits, add break, post credits etc. Plus you then tend to want to fix then, either reformatting, or joining subs that were previously split probably due to SD lower resolution vs HD, and just fixing up bad timing on the source. Plus fixing up some annoying bad translations, or figuring how to deal with occasional on screen positioned label type subs for signs (I don't have an answer on that).

Re-timing the subs is easily done through software. Honestly can't remember if I had to do that the one time I lifted subs off a Hong Kong DVD release to put on a German BD.

Found a good guide, which worked great when I was fiddling with Brave Story but then when I tried again after that it started acting up something funny and bloating all my files (if I tried to remux Macross Frontier for example before even changing anything the output folder became like 160gb, anyone here who knows their stuff and have the patience to help me are seriously welcome. I need y'all in my life).

I kind of cheated when I was retiming Macross Frontier, I downloaded fansubs based off the BD set and just retimed them to my disc which usually just meant shifting all the subs by a second or two. Was a pain locating all the styled subs and making them simple- especially because I don't know if I got all of them and if I should have re positioned the now-non-styled lines back into a regular position (which I don't know how to do). Was also easy with one file having most but not all of the episodes in one file because I just timed all the separate episodes right then brought them together into one file for the bigger file and just compiled them together shifting them by however long into the file that episode started (I used the opening as a base because it was the one constant.
I don't know if I got rid of all the styling and made the subs themselves come through right but I know the timing is correct for what I've done so far and that only took me an afternoon.

Not to mention they'll be missing extras from ADV's release (Especially the easter eggs on the Platinum singles), might be missing the extras ADV failed to get us from the JP releases, won't have real booklets most likely (Like the ones from the Platinum singles), probably half-ass the disc art, and will continue to think cardboard sleeves are real digipaks (You used to do these things regularly, what happened? *Looks at Glassdoor reviews* Oh right...).

From what I've heard, this kind of stuff started in like late 2012, around the time Charlene left. Definitely explains things like the decline in disc art quality, increased PR incompetence, increased leaks, screwy things like the Shangri-La S.A.V.E. typo (PROPERTY TITLE GOES HERE THE COMPLETE SERIES), Heaven's Lost Property BD slipcover over the S1 RE that was DVD-sized, etc. that began around then/shortly after.
