I really think its time for Universal to re-boot the franchise and make a new "Airport" sequel. There have been some very good "peril in the sky" films since "Airport '79", such as "Die Hard 2", "Passenger 57", "Executive Decision", "Red Eye", "Con Air", "Flightplan" and "Snakes on a Plane" to name a few. In 1983 Jennings Lang announced that Universal was moving forward with "Airport 2000" which again was to star George Kennedy. The studio hired writer/director Larry Cohen to write the film, where a supersonic aircraft that travels in a low orbit in outer space encounters disaster. But the film never got passed the development stage. This info was taken from a book I read called "Disaster in the Sky" by John W. Law. (This premise was later adapted into a TV movie called Starflight One: The Plane That Couldn't Land" which aired on ABC in 1983 and was directed by Jerry Jameson, who directed "Airport '77" and Lalo Schiffrin who did the awesome soundtrack for Airport '79" does the music for this film. It was also released to theaters internationally).
I thought Universal's "Non-Stop" with Liam Neeson would have have made for a good entry in the "Airport" series. I would feel just like a kid again, going to the theater and seeing the word "AIRPORT" on a huge IMAX screen followed by whatever year the entry takes place! ![]() Last edited by steev210; 06-26-2016 at 11:42 PM. |

Last night, I watched The Concorde: Airport '79, and thoroughly enjoyed seeing the film for the first time.
The Concorde: Airport '79 is the weakest entry so far in terms of story, but, like the other three films, it has a high rewatch value due to the strength of the cast. This time around, some legends of foreign cinema, namely Alain Delon (Le Samouraï), Bibi Andersson (Persona), Sylvia Kristel (Emmanuelle), and others join a strong American cast, including Robert Wagner, Susan Blakely, and, in his recurring Airport role, George Kennedy. In this film, a villain aims to destroy the Concorde in an attempt to eliminate some incriminating documents. The first two attempts fail, but the third time is a charm, and the end result is a scramble to save the passengers from death. As with the other three films, I have only good things to say about the Blu-ray presentation. I'm now finished with the box set. This is a hugely worthwhile Blu-ray purchase, especially for only $17.99! |

Concorde must be seen to be believed. Many cringing moments. High suspension of disbelief needed. You have to go into watching this with the thought that they were aware by this point of the camp factor of the series, and it is really played up in this one. Martha Raye's and JJ Walker's bits say it all. I still like it mainly because of George Kennedy. He's back in a substantial role after his walk-on in Airport '77. Weakest video quality of the set, but this always looked bad. Without some serious digital work, this is probably the best it will look though. This has a very hot audio track with a spot or two of distortion, but has a nice full range sound for mono.

Owl - so great to see a positive take on "79". I actually love this one. Yes, it has flaws (the SFX in the other three were much better, and there were some questionable plot elements) but it's very exciting, interesting and enjoyable. And yes, that score!
Airport 77 - I too noticed the missing engines and I always believed that we were supposed to assume that the engines were ripped off the wings during the crash. They are plainly visible though when the plane first smacks down. I'll have to watch again, but I *think* that when we see the shot of the plane starting to sink, the engines are already gone. Do we know if the PQ is identical to the French BD releases? Thanks! |

The plot you suggested revolving around Non-Stop is a good idea, but I was thinking more of like a true remake of the first one, where we see the inner workings of today's airports and the way people are all these decades later in stark comparison (though this wouldn't really be fun to look at, given the rude behavior in terminals and on the planes themselves today, what with all the wannabe Kardashian glamazons taking selfies on luggage carousels as their miniskirts cover barely anything or the nasty 600-pound guy sitting next to you with shoes off, feet on the headrest and skidmark-encrusted panties peeking out from his Dockers...a FAR CRY from how everyone dressed and acted back when Airport was filmed, eh?)... |

A totally innocuous thing that only us blu-ray geeks would notice but while watching the Airport sequels a few times I had to pause for a bit and noticed the discs didn't jump to that Universal screensaver that you have to hit Top Menu to get out of. I'm assuming Universal have discarded that for their discs now.

Quality wise, Watched 1975 tonight and most of it looked fantastic. Screened '77 last week and it easily comes in second following the original as far as video quality. 1975 comes in 3rd and that turd '79 that a lot of people get a kick out of sports the worst presentation. Have to admit, I do love what Universal released. I felt like I was actually back in the theatre watching 1975 and '77. Two-Minute Warning and Rollercoaster look and sound terrific also. |

It's odd that Blu-ray.com hasn't posted a review as of yet. I've been looking forward to it. How long does it usually take between a release and a review here?
I have the French blu-rays and yet still, I'm tempted to buy the USA release ![]() |
