Unfortunately I have no way of testing the disc to find out- both my 4K players are Euro zone and I do not have a drive & software on my desktop to check it.

almost impossible. eagle specifically told me via DM on FB that the upcoming release will be region free. i'm sure this time there won't be any problems on that.

Does the current steelbook release have any issues re subs/burnt in titles etc for English speaking viewers? I think you mentioned previously you sold your steelbook?...

(on a side note, I notice we have the same soundbar...can you tell me what number setting/level do you have the upward firing speakers on the main bar set to?...thx!)

There are scenes with burned in Italian text. Also, I don't remember where I read this (might've been Reddit), but someone said that while there are English subtitles for the foreign dialogue, they do omit some lines and onscreen text.

Thanks for the info- I will wait then to see how the 4Kult disc is- hate it when burned in foreign text appears onscreen even if it only happens a couple of times during the film.

If it has not been posted before, here is a detailed review of the current 'locked' Italian 4K release...

Major bummer for so many potential buyers!

Another thing that’s very unfortunate is the localization of the English intertitles during the early silent film montage. They are thank God subtitled, as are the Indigenous words. (The subtitles activate automatically once you select English in the main menu). Otherwise, the UHD is English friendly with a Italian / English menu coming up in the beginning.

Picture quality is GREAT when considering the length of the film and its mostly analogue nature. Grain resolves exceptionally well under these circumstances. Colors are great. Average HDR brightness is 163 nits, maximum 1000 nits. Nothing too dim, this is very likely exactly what’s been approved by Scorsese.

The 5.1 sound is equally great and a powerhouse track. Robbie Robertson’s Osage Oil Boom track in particular sounds absolutely phenomenal. The 5.1 on disc is a clear improvement over the Atmos on streaming! I have compared this with the Apple stream. Rich dynamics, powerful LFE, a wide soundscape. Everything we want to hear!

It’s such a shame that this exceptional encode was not made available to more people. Hopefully hopefully Paramount has a surprise up for us sooner than later. This masterpiece has to be properly preserved on physical media. Eagle did half of the job, now it’s up to another party to grant everybody proper access.
Thank you so much for this review. I ordered this today from a seller on Ammy UK, but then I noticed the “Forced Subtitles” in the specs and I flipped out thinking it meant that the Italian was forced, for the entire film (that would have been fracking annoying). If it only happens for the silent film bit, I can live with that (don’t think the 4Kult release will change that).
It’s a shame about the Region B locking shite, but I’m sure 4Kult’s release will fix that issue.

A 4K disc really shouldn’t be locked and I think it’s due to a mistake by the person preparing the disc. It happened to a couple of Aussie 4K’s, but it was a f*ck up: Umbrella fixed it (if I’m not mistaken), and they also ran a disc replacement program (or so I read).

I’m betting it’s cos they have so much stock of the Region B locked 4K that they can’t unload. And it also isn’t due to shop until April 10.

Just bought a copy of the original release from a 2nd party seller on Amazon for around half of what the sell for on EBay.

I’m betting the 4KULT release will still have Italian and forced subs in the silent movie portion.

I edited the entry and checked that "forced subtitles" option because the disc automatically turns on English or Italian subtitles (depending on which language you chose in the menu) for the foreign dialogue. They can be disabled however, via remote.

Forced subtitles come in different types and unfortunately the site doesn't make a distinction between them yet. They can be removable, non-removable but movable via the "shift" feature or just straight up encoded into the image.

Thank you very much for the explanation. So, what this I read about the “localisation of the silent film” part of the film (towards the start).
I assume it means the Silent Film has Italian language “silent film cards” for the silent film “dialogue” and on the disc, you get English subs as a translation. Am I understanding that correctly?

Yes, exactly this. The intertitles of the silent film sections are in Italian, with English translations at the bottom (first segment) or top (second segment) of the screen. IIRC, there are three intertitles in each segment. The only other subs are for the Osage dialogue (although it depends on the scene; not everything is translated).

Reminds me of The Godfather, and in the restaurant, where the Corleone’s rival asks the head copper if he can talk to Michael in Italian. Always been curious to know what it is he said… Although, essentially, it doesn’t need translation since our protagonist isn’t really listening: He’s just focused on what he is about to do. Great scene.
