I got delivered my 4K Toho/JAPAN 1 disc version of GVK off Amazon Japan. The ASL parts of the movie have got English subs but obviously the movie lacks English subs for the rest of the dialogues.

I think the 4K Japan edit was the INTENDED encode made for Warner and Japan regions to fit a BD100 disc. In the end Warner released the movie in BD66 rather than BD100 probably due to lack of BD100 due to Covid. The UK 4k version is apparently a BD100 but still retains the BD66 video encode and extra extra languages.
Interesting, thanks for the information! I had forgotten that the first film was on a 66 GB disc from Warner and find it interesting that the Toho left the English subtitles in. I do think that The New Empire has more subtitled ASL than the first film, so perhaps Toho may opt for a "clean" master (with no English subtitles) this time, or perhaps not.

Toho will most probably provide English subs for ASL bits only. They won't do a full English subs due to some territorial sales etc. I don't have the word for it.

Same was done by Eagle Pictures for the movie CODA. The movie got full English subs as literally the whole movie had ASL. Eagle Pictures has released alot of Hollywood titles on 4k sans the English subs.

Foreign distributors CAN put in English subs for PARTS if the movie got ASL/BSL. GVK, GXK and CODA are prime examples.

The analog intermediate or whatever it's called doesn't gel well with the bright, slightly overcooked HDR in my opinion. The disc goes from looking amazing to somewhat fuzzy a lot of the time.
Also the movie was a bit of a dud. Time for Adam Wingard to move on to something else.

When do you think 5-film collector's edition 4K set would go on sale?
Upcoming Prime Day (October 8 and 9) or Black Friday?
Even though I'm not a fan of package design (digibook), I would like to save some space for 5 movies.

EDIT: As of this writing (October 8, 2024), it's on sale for $69.99 as Prime Big Deal Days!

5-film set is $69.99 Prime Day deal. I'm gonna hold off and wait to see if Gruv does a better Black Friday deal.

I might bite on this and then buy one of six disc holders for them.

I got the 5-film 4K set from Prime Big Deal Days for $70 and aside digibook case (which is not the most clever and ideal way to store discs), I like that ALL the special features from retail exclusive (Target) for Godzilla and Kong, are included as part of Special Features on separate disc, since Godzilla ~ Godzilla vs. Kong 4K UHD has no special features.

A bit off topic, but is there a thread for retail exclusive (Target, Walmart) bonus discs?

Anybody here into the Japan sets? There really cool! The slip box is kind of iridescent like Shimu. This particular set came with a lithograph, acrylic stand, stickers and a Steelbook. I’ll post the Steelbook separately as I’m out of photo space.

Default Digibook & steelbook

This is the digibook and Steelbook. The front of the Steelbook is in my above post, this is the back and inside. Matte finish. I hope to be able to get the King of the Monsters set like this some day. It’d be cool if they did Kong: Skull Island too.

That’s nice. I got the GVK 2021 4k from Japan as the encoding is better than the international Warner 4k (bd100 vs bs66). GxK I don’t think will be no different as both Warner and Toho are using bd100 on this release unless there is a difference in the video encode again.

I just really enjoy these sets for the disc art and foldouts. I originally ordered Godzilla vs Kong from Japan to compare 100 vs 66 disc and just wound up really liking the set. I remember the Atmos track spiking super high in the action scenes but audibly I couldn’t tell it from the US version.

I got the 1 disc 4k edition as I heard the GVK video encode was better. Someone posted in the blu ray or AVforums that the Toho video encode is better(I think its the encode supplied by Warner for a bd100 disc). Warner must have gone for lower encode because of covid and all.

Anyways, if u get ur hands on a Warner GXK, do a comparison with the 4k Toho. My guess is it will be the same and toho encode is actually provided by Warner.

I have the Warner Walmart Steelbook, they look the same at first glance. I’ll deep dive a little later but like you said, probably the same.

Anyone know if on the UK box the rating logos are stickers so they can be removed?
