The extended cut is pretty bad though and wasn't meant to be shown. The Fremen's eyes aren't even blue in some scenes.

True, but there are several crucial scenes in the extended cut such as the dialogue between the Emperor and the Reverend Mother and Feyd ripping off Leto's insignia.

I heard a rumor long ago that Lynch was working on a ultimate cut of Dune, I guess it was false but that would have been great to see.

Seen the comparison between the french and US disc. Some say minor crushed blacks on US and some shots looks better in french but overall I would pick (the very cheap) US since it looks better cleaned up and do not have boosted brightness. Think US audio is better also at least on specifications. What are your thoughts?

American is the best version.

I assume that Universal finally releasing the Smithee cut on DVD (after years of saying they never would) was the final nail in the coffin for any Lynch re-cut.

I took that to mean that it was never going to happen and Universal was no longer concerned with how Lynch felt about the whole thing.

Personally, I'd rather see a recut than the extended. I have it on DVD and, while interesting, it's a mess. Temp FX, editing done with a hacksaw, poor flow, etc... it's not a good watching experience. A few cool scenes/moments don't make up for that.

I'm not so sure about that. The U.S. version does look slightly cleaner, but does have a few crushed blacks on uniforms, stillsuits, and in shadows while the French version does not. It's a close call, but ultimate fans will want both versions. I am one of those ultimate fans, but I don't want to pay the import cost.

I agree. I want some of the extended cut scenes implemented into the theatrical cut, but not at all. The Emperor's and Reverend Mother's extended converstaion, Paul's extended conversation with Yueh during training, Gurney's extended narration during Paul's training, Leto's extended conversation with Duncan, Yueh's extended death, Feyd ripping off Leto's insignia. IMHO all of the other extended scenes do nothing but mess up the pacing.

I traded in my French copy. It's still available for $12.99 and it's mint.

They both have their pros and cons. U.S. version is cleaner while the French version doesn't have any crushed blacks.

Have the norwegian release, don't know if it's the same transfer, but would be surprised if it wasn't.My version is a solid 4/5 to me.

About your signature:You are a fan of Eraserhead aren't you.Wish Blue velvet would hurry up and get released soon.Think Eraserhead won't benefit too much from BD,but would buy it if it got released.

You got me!
MGM actually just announced Blue Velvet for a November 8th release in America. Lynch has been color-timing those lost scenes, and most likely helping with the new transfer. MGM's last DVD still looks wonderful, so I can only imagine what this'll look like.

Just about to push the button on the US version of Dune - which Im pretty sure is region-free (it better be!)

Ive noticed that there seems to be two german versions - and one of them seems to have the extended cut? (look on amazon.co.uk for instance).

Very confusing and I cannot find any details about these either. I would love the extended version as well. I wonder if the extended version the one seems to have is in fact a DVD not a blu? (I had the extended version on DVD, quality was terrible).

Comparing this bluray to my old dvd copy of Dune from a decade ago, it was like the difference between night and day. My old dvd copy has a 1998 date, and is a single layer dvd disc. A decade ago, I thought this dvd transfer of Dune was kinda crappy.

This bluray transfer completely blows away the 1998 dvd version. (I haven't seen the other dvd releases of Dune after the 1998 version).

This is certainly worth double dipping on.
Dune (both cuts) were remastered for the 2006 DVD steelbook edition. That new master was used for the HD DVD and BD, but unfortunately neither one contains the extended cut.

I wish they would just make a ultimate collectors edition with both version like they did with close encounters and blade runner!

The reason why Universal hasn't done it is because Lynch has disowned the extended version. He won't make a commentary or even a short featurette about it. Lynch really made an above average adaptation of a monumental novel, but after it bombed at the box office he just threw his hands up like a disgruntled kid who just got beaten up. Ever since then he has shunned every home video release of Dune, but has made sure it's his preferred theatrical cut that has been placed on shelves.
