AGREED ! - that is exactly what I said about 75 pages ago.

yes, but who on this forum would even watch the Theatrical Version of Aliens ? I am sure most of us watch the Extended version, which, by definition, can never be shown at home "as it was screened in theatres"

Shouldn't they want it as it was seen in the theaters in '77, '80, and '83?

Or the James Bond films...perhaps Lowry Digital shouldn't have restored those either.

Or Lawrence of Arabia...

Or the Indiana Jones Trilogy...

I could go on and on...

Look, this argument has been recycled ever since the days of DVD. Everybody wants the best possible presentation of the film on their home medium of the time, yet, when restoration/remastering doesn't or does occur that people don't like for whatever reason, people complain. In some cases, people complain about lousey tranfers, while others complain that it doesn't look like it did back in the theaters...I have a question for that..."Have you been to my local theater?" Quite frankly, it sucks...I go to a movie there and I wouldn't have any idea how a film is "supposed to look"...not to mention how it sounds. This is why I don't go to the theaters anymore. With the advent of HDTVs and now BD, there's no need to. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised that whenever 3D TV becomes more mainstream, that it'll start putting cineplexes out of business. Because by then, the novelty of theaters will have worn off. Just as hi-tech home gaming consoles have put coin arcades out of business.
I'm not going to bother with the twenty-something pages that have been added since my last post, but 'restoration' refers to bringing something back the way it was originally, which is what I prefer, instead of this revisionism crap. How can that possibly be wrong?

Pathetic. This has turned from super-entertaining, super-heated debate to a pissing contest over a poll.

I was so happy when dad took me to see it a second time , and there was a third time also, it made such an impact on my dad, he wanted to see it multiple times. Those are some of the most cherrished memories in my childhood, and my dad is a part of them. No nightmares on my part or anything like that. It became my favourite movie .
I saw Nightmare On Elm Street when I was 3. I saw Predator at around that age too, so I can relate. I didn't have nightmares either. However, that still doesn't make it right. I just think that the age of consent to watch movies involving people getting brutally murdered should come at a time when the imagination doesn't bleed so easily into a child's perception of reality.

To this day, I think it was a little messed up that I was making Freddy claws out of paper when I was literally going to pre-school. The teachers certainly made weird faces!

Edit: sorry for steering so clear of the topic at hand.

I'm disturbed by the fact that the 2008 Blu-ray release isn't much further ahead in the poll.

It's an internet poll. anyone that tries to read ANYTHING from it, for either side, is spinning a fairy tale.

Besides it being an internet poll, with all the heated back and forth here and popel spending so much time posting in it, do you really think people aren't voting again and again under different handles?

I have the 2008 version and will just stick with that one. I have only watched it 2-3 times since I having it and I personally don't need to double dip. To those who will I hope you enjoy the new release.

The new edition really has bad picture quality. I am probably sure that the people who like it are people who like their movies to look like high def broadcasting such as sports,...or soap opera effect from LCD screens.

I HATE the soap opera effect......I always have to turn the 120 hz down to enjoy the movie.

Is it possible that vision is playing a factor in grading this blu-ray? Eventhough I personally like the new blu-ray, I'm amazed that there are so many blu-ray review sites that give the blu-ray positive reviews. I like this blu-ray but I totally understand how people can't even watch it.

This blu-ray is like the alien conspiracy in They Live.

I still really can't find these people that hate the look of film so much that they demand that studios use over-aggressive DNR on movies like this.

Aside from myself, the rest of my family (age ranges from 23-61) isn't extremely picky about PQ/AQ. My father loves watching Blu-rays, my mother and sister see a bit of difference but not enough to avoid watching a movie on DVD even if there is a BD release.

Three of my friends have BD players, the remaining 10 or so of them do not. They are all in their mid to late 20s, the so called "PS3 demographic" or whatever the term is to describe the video gaming people that want the "clean" look to movies that supposedly justifies the DNR in movies like Predator.

All of them have seen Blu-rays at my house, from the latest Pixar films to live-action movies like 3:10 to Yuma, Casino Royale, etc to movies with more pronounced grain like Minority Report or Quantum of Solace. I am running a 65" 1080i CRT projection TV with an HDMI connection. The picture is very sharp and detailed as a CRT should look, the grain is definitely visible.

Not a single person has ever complained about grain. One time I was at my friend's house and I explained to him why he should turn off the Vivid mode on his TV as he was washing out detail with excessive brightness and contrast when we were watching Speed on BD. This was also a good time to explain about film grain and DNR. He understood and agreed, but he was happy with 300 even before I explained this.

The response to people who normally don't watch BD movies ranges from astonishment (the typical response ) to "it looks better, but not enough to upgrade", but I have never heard a complaint or even a comment about grain, and I've never had to give the DNR talk to anyone aside from one of my friends.

So again I ask: if there is such a demand for DNR'd movies, why haven't I ever heard anyone complain about it? There are people on this forum who seem to think that way, but even here they are a minority.

^^ Agree with the poster above, when me and my gf first got our HDTV and PS3 the first movie we saw was 300, we didn't complain about the grain. That was also before I knew anything about these things. Friends have seen movies with me, Close Encounter of the Third Kind and no complains either.

I'm curious about that too. Does anyone remember threads here or other forums about people complaining about the grain in the original Predator blu-ray or in any other film? Or about grain in general? I haven't seen any dvd or blu-ray threads about people that complain about grain, have you or anyone else?
