Why not? They're both sourced from camera negatives. Well the comparison was for the sake of a truly, scrubbed, DNR-ridden image - which Akira 4K most definitely is. Titanic 4K looks impeccable by comparison, Q-Tec (who did the 4K for Akira) truly f***ed up by biblical proportions. It's bad.

I've been banging this drum every 5 pages in that thread. People don't want to accept reality. Even when they know 7 of the 10 facts. And they tell you they understand. They still then use the 8th fact they leap to for constructing their own version of what happened.

Some notable thinkers do say we live in a "post truth society".

Interesting, if that's true then hats-off to StudioCanal for the having the power over Jim.

Either way I still expect a re-release with Titanic-Digitalization™ treatment.

but you're using the old BD as if that'd be their source. the old BD could've been poorly processed and/or encoded that leads to less detail than the raw 2K master scans which would obviously be a far more likely source for an upscale and yield better fine details than the old BD

edit: that being said, supposedly the old BD was a 4K scan?

That's because Cameron *doesn't* own Terminator 1 and 2 like he does his other movies. Though I heard one time that in a few years, rights will go back to him.

They already have? That's why the new Terminator movie got made with him producing this time. I thought, anyways.

Perhaps. I thought he doesn't own Aliens and The Abyss either.

Talking about grain, sharpness and DNR.
There's definitely more grain, DNR and sharpness in this entire 3 minutes and 40 seconds video than the entire 4K re-release of TITANIC, tbh.

Watch It in 4K to see what I mean.

Oh, and the trend has become popular for old music videos getting "remastered" in 4K on YouTube.

At least we haven't got a lazy-cheap money grabbing transfer for TITANIC.
Time was definitely worth the wait.

I mean the rights of T1 and T2, not the IP itself.

MGM and StudioCanal still have a grip on both

This is true, yes the film itself was scanned at 4K for the 2012 re-release and 3D conversion. The studio released a bunch of the actual full Super35 uncropped frame scans, in their original size to show off the quality. I saved all of them and will have to find them on my laptop to share here in this forum. But yeah, the grain was still intact (in the scans you can see the very subtle colours that make up the film grain, it's really lovely and organic). It'd be interesting to compare those 4K frames from 2012, to this new 4K UHD.

Anyway - we've got what we've got. While I do love the details in the screenshots I've seen, I don't love the fact that it's gone through some AI enhancing and it now apparently has a more digital /clean appearance overall... But what can we do? It's done.

Digital Bits review : https://thedigitalbits.com/item/tita...5thle-uhd-2023 (It's pretty much how I feel about it.)

Quote:
Film/Program Grade: B+
Video Grade: A
Audio Grade: A
Extras Grade: A

Now then… the specific details of this film’s remastering (both in 2012 and 2023) I’m going to elaborate on more fully after conferring with Lightstorm, so check back here in a week or two and I’ll have more to say on the subject (with accurate information directly from the remastering team). In the meantime, you should know that Cameron himself supervised and approved this work. What it looks like to me, is that Lightstorm went back to original camera negative (scanned in 16-bit 4K) for scenes not involving visual effects, then upscaled the best existing 2K source for VFX shots. It also appears that some grain management has been applied to even out levels throughout the film, but not so much as to remove the grain completely—it does still appear here and is definitely organic—but it’s very fine indeed (some of this must also due to the selection of film stocks, which were designed to exhibit extremely fine grain and enable very high sharpness). And obviously, the image has been graded for high dynamic range (available here in both Dolby Vision and HDR10).

The resulting 4K image is… well, frankly it looks spectacular. Shocking, almost. Titanic still looks like a film, but more like a modern film release than I’ve certainly ever seen it before (...) For a film of this vintage, the remastered image is pretty extraordinary. I’m almost tempted to give the image quality an A+ grade, but I can’t quite do that given the amount of upsampling that’s obviously been done for effects shots, which dominate the second half of the film. But holy shit does this 4K image look A) remarkable, and B) so much better than I was expecting (...) The 4K image here isn’t perfect, but Titanic simply shouldn’t look this good. Yet it does. (You’ll understand what I mean when you see it for ourselves—again, check back in a week or so for all the official remastering details.)
Slant Magazine review : https://www.slantmagazine.com/dvd/ti...james-cameron/

Quote:
This UHD disc, sourced from a recent 4K remaster, is a massive upgrade over its predecessor. The film’s rich colors—from sepia-toned transitions from the present to the past to the florid dresses of first-class passengers to the already-fading fresh paint in steerage—are boosted while maintaining clear separation between the deliberate clashes of palettes. Detail is so fine that you can see the peach fuzz on shaved lips and women’s arms, and black levels in the inky nighttime scenes are so crisp that the final act feels even more ominous as the ship slowly sinks into the desolate patch of ocean.

I know, but I want to know what he thinks. Because everyone's giving this disc an A+ but apparently he thinks it looks awful.

I do not think this looks awful based on the caps we've seen so far. But I don't think it looks as it should.
