How on earth did I look past your post for several weeks? Thank you for all your kind words, Mercury Seven! Hugely appreciated. Others did all the heavy lifting when it came to the actual restoration, obviously, but as one who gained a lot of appreciation for Taza, Son of Cochise in the course of my research, I feel proud to hear you (and other folks) say such nice things.

I wish we could all contact George Feltenstein, Senior Vice President, Theatrical Catalog Marketing at Warner Bros. Home Entertainment and ask him why they did not release it in 3-D.

They could have definitely included the 3-D version of the cartoon in the set as a bonus. This was their chance. It's not like WB is broke. They could have easily paid for the restoration of the other side of the cartoon and included a 3-D version.
Maybe someday if WAC ever releases a classic 3-D Warner Bros. movie on Blu-ray like Phantom of the Rue Morgue, they could include a 3-D version of Lumber Jack-Rabbit as a bonus? It's wishful thinking, I know. I'll yell ya - I hate lost opportunities. It's heartbreaking when something like this happens. This development doesn't bode well for a 3-D version of Popeye, Ace of Space, either, should WAC begin releasing Popeye sets that cover the 1950's. As a huge fan of classic Golden Age 3-D content, I view developments like this almost as an act of cruelty. If WB doesn't want to release 3-D versions of these cartoons, why deny the 3DFA from including them in one of the 3-D Rarities collections? I'm very disgusted right now. None of us are going to be alive forever, but some jackass in charge seems hellbent on keeping this content away from people who are dying to see it. |

They are trying to pump out both Wings of the Hawk and Dynasty by the end of the year. Revenge of the Shogun Women and The Bubble: Roadshow Version will follow in 2021, and that's all Bob has announced. It takes about 3 months average for the Archive to complete a restoration, so probably no other secret titles for 2020.

I saw Lumberjack Rabbit in 3D before a 3D showing of House of Wax in 2000. They likely had made new prints of it then. This should've been a no-brainer.

Absolutely. WB should be reminded that Bugs Bunny only turns 80 once. This is meant to be a special occasion. Also, I can understand the recycling of cartoons that have been previously remastered in HD in order to pad the set out a bit, but it also seems that many excellent cartoons that could have been given a tidy up and a release here, weren't. Why not a 7 bluray set, with 140 or so Bugs cartoons? I'd pay whatever it cost, these classics of animation deserve to be seen.

From the Warner Archive (2D) thread by way of HTF
Someone claimed to have talked with someone at Warner MPI (Warner Bros.' own scanning facility they use for all their releases), and they had this to say: As digital restoration tools get better (and cheaper), WAC's now been able to use those to keep costs down, making films that would have been more expensive to restore in the past more feasible now. HBO Max is also apparently spurring some of the new restorations as well. Not many details were given on this, but it was basically summed up as "If HBO Max does well, more restorations may be now on the table.". This was in response to why more 30s-50s titles have been issued by WAC. I know good 3D requires more than digital restoration, could this mean anything? I know Warner is very proud of its heritage. It must eat at them that Columbia, Paramount and Universal have as many or more stereoscopic titles out from their catalog.. |

HBO Max doesn't air 3-D content. So if HBO Max is driving film restorations of 30's-50's material, then it doesn't necessarily mean 3-D films will be restored.

By the way, just watched Ben Mankiewicz's intro to the Moonlighter for TCM. After mentioning MacMurray/Stanwyck's many film partnerships his last statement was that it was shot in 3D. A point that I left out from the original post was "he confirmed that digital tools to complete restorations keep getting better which keeps costs down unless the restoration needs to be frame by frame" This would be interesting: Even if Warner insists on handling everything in house, they enter a partnership with a boutique label for producing a title. Warner gets to air it on HBOMax and the boutique label gets the rights for a limited edition 3D blu which after a while reverts back to WAC... Last edited by robtadrian; 08-03-2020 at 03:13 PM. |

I missed the intro for The Moonlighter, but when a 75 minute long film has an intermission, I kinda figured it was originally 3D.

That's strange. I have it recorded and the intro was done by Dave Karger. No mention of 3D. |
