Look at the top of the back of the shuttle. And what's happening between these two frames there, is happening more than once. If that's new, they totally digitally stümpered there.

If you're referring to the matte lines then they come and go throughout these shots, that's just the old VFX as not everything could be recomposited digitally.

I'm not sure what I'm supposed to be seeing either, and that's on a 32" monitor, with the images zoomed to full magnification.

I wondered if it might be the matte lines but figured they are what they are, products of their time.

The major reason that NO OTHER RETAILER can match: customer service, and Amazon has been very good to us for several reasons.
First, I call them or request a call from them using the Help links when signed in, and I do that because I usually find myself requesting a United States rep and usually get that is accomplished right away. If not, I remind who I speak to regarding Amazon's policy - if a customer requests a supervisor, the call is supposed to end right there and transferred without hassle.
When discs arrive damaged or I find them defective, regardless if it came from them or a third party seller (especially one that's been getting lower seller ratings as I point that out to them), they replace it if it came from them, or refund if it came from a third party seller especially if the third party seller refuses to send me a return label.
If something is from Amazon, they immediately set it up for us to drop off the defective item at our local UPS store, and sometimes they tell me to toss it - the replacement is on its way.
What blew me away in the last couple of years was when I purchased a low end Sony 4k player. one by one they had issues and Amazon replaced them using the UPS store again. No label to print, just take a picture of the bar code and go.
The third (or forth) unit was two months past the return period and Sony was absolute jerks to deal with to get warranty promises... and Amazon took it back, and gave me a refund. There were plenty of customer comments about how bad Sony's units were so perhaps that made the whole thing easier, I don't know.
One thing about that - I commented to the Amazon customer service rep that I bought all of these 4k discs from Amazon over the holidays and now I don't have anything dependable to play them on, and that rep offered me to return all of them for a refund. You're kidding me, right? No, he wasn't.
I declined because these were movies I'd watch a few more times before my time ends (as I know my clock is ticking), and I knew the mid-line Panasonic was very highly rated and told him I'd wait for the sales, and that's how that ended - refunded for that crap Sony 4k players - and shocked.
That's customer service, and it came from Amazon.
Never do I have that type of help from Best Buy, Target, Walmart on line, etc.
The only other type of excellent customer service came once from my local Walmart store (not the worthless and useless online Walmart), when the Samsung TV was still a month away from the 12 month warranty and Samsung was total butt-wipes to deal with when that TV died.
After a month (and time running out) of yelling at every foreign speaking Samsung rep I came across, and no action, I ran into the general manager of the Walmart store one day and told him about the issues. I had the paperwork for the purchase and extended warranty in my pocket that day because Samsung requested the same information to be sent to them for the forth or fifth time to a different department.
That Walmart GM told me to bring that TV to the store and he told the department head at customer service to issue a refund.
Another thing about Amazon, dealing with Amazon.es after receiving the Fright Night II blu-ray that is suppose to be region free per blu-ray.com.
I couldn't get it to play in the Sony blu-ray player. I wrote to Amazon.es in english and used a translator program to include what that said, and they were sending a replacement and requested I send them the other disc. After speaking to Amazon U.S., I told them our situation and requested a return label and that rep said toss it.
After receiving the second disc and it wouldn't play, I just contacted Amazon U.S. and told them the story. That rep issued a refund and said toss it.
That was about three or four years ago - and the reason I bring this up is back to the Panasonic mid-line 4k player I eventually purchased from Amazon.
Not long ago, I came across those Fright Night II discs again and just by chance, tried to play them. They played fine.
I'm the kind of person who immediately feels that I should pay Amazon for at least one of these because I just discovered (again) how crappy Sony is (when it used to be the brand to depend on). I called Amazon, requested the supervisor, told her the story. I really wanted to pay for one and return the other and this took her by surprise, even transferring me to one of the big bosses and he also refused but was surprised in my insistence to do the right thing. They explained there wasn't a way for anyone to deal with this, appreciated my efforts and left it at that.
This is 100% truth and nothing is made up.
So when you say "surprised people still use Amazon unless absolutely necessary" - customer service.
Just contact them directly when you have an issue, and always have a smile in your voice. Remember, they just work there, and the first or second person may not know the options they can offer, but keep that smile in your voice and try again. You'll find customer service you never saw coming.

I hadn't picked up any of the 4K releases yet, but now that Amazon UK have dropped the 4 movie set to £39.99 and I had a £7 discount offer for using a locker pickup (even though I've used the locker option several times previously), it was an easy decision to buy that and pick up V and VI when the price is similarly attractive. I've got the I-X 50th Anniversary Blu collection to tide me over till then. £33 for 4 compare to £99 for 6 was a no-brainer and I'm prepared to gamble on the SLV either getting a price drop or vanilla release in the future. If not, I'll not shed a tear.

Thanks guys. I also just took a look at the TC and there it also looks like matte lines to me.

Thing is that with the DE it's all so sharp now and looks like flickering digital garbage instead of dated fx to me now. I'll still forgive, but prefer the look of the TC here - it's way more distracting now.

Default I have the 4 film set from last year

and picked up 5 and 6 and wanted this one as well but now having second thoughts. Hope to see a full fledged Geoffy review on this, but I’m starting the first 6 films now, and will just watch the directors edition on Paramount plus (although I love special features).

This seems to have been a deliberate creative choice, so probably not.

I'll have to have a closer look at this. I've gotten to where I'm a little wishy-washy on DNR these days. When used carefully, the picture can come out looking clean but still natural. Of course, there are obviously other times when they just turn the knob to 11, and it looks wretched.

I felt the joy draining out of me (at least I hope it was joy) while watching it, I'm so disappointed that I'm not sure I want to expend that much energy on it. Though to be fair I can't say that we weren't warned:

Quote:
It was all about making it this new experience that draws you in and takes you and gives you that film joy of just floating into it and doesn’t have any of the flaws over the years, other shortcomings that were there. It’s cleaned up, and one of my goals was, early on, I told everybody: let’s do everything we can to take anything that’s in the film that takes you out of the film out, like the huge grain, that’s suddenly all you’re looking at is grain going by. It can’t lose the detail because there’s so much beauty in what we’re seeing. But that grain distracted you. Like the big shot where the Enterprise is coming out of V’Ger and all you saw is blue with lots of grain. Now it’s smooth, it works without losing the quality. That’s the thing. There’s so much love in it, and giving us the experience of exhilaration at moments, that’s not the word that I ever would have used for the film before. So my greatest hope is that people will see it for what it is. It’s a film for 2022 and I’m so excited for everyone to be able to see it.

Fein is talking about a specific VFX shot there but even so, earlier in the same interview he says that virtually every shot in the film "had some touch or alteration to it" and keeps saying in interviews that it wasn't about restoring an old film but making it seem new for a modern audience. What a plonker.

I figured that sort of thing was marketing-speak.

But yeah it's disappointing, especially since in 2001 the stated idea was, CGI notwithstanding, to make the film look like it could have been completed that way in 1979. They didn't completely succeed, but at least that was the intention.

I will say that the color-grading in the Vulcan scene is much more natural-looking. Also, what I've heard of the Atmos track so far is very well-engineered, and Goldsmith's music sounds positively heavenly.

So for me Amazon is quite necessary. If there are other sellers online that are in IOSS (Import One-Stop-Shop), I'd be glad to hear about them. For instance I had to stop ordering CDs from Screen Archive Entertainment, because they weren't in IOSS. Luckily I found another soundtrack dealer from France with reasonable prices compared to Amazon's.
So you’d come under that necessary category I mentioned, huh.

Yeah well, that notion went out of the airlock for the 2022 edition. After originally reading his comments I hoped that they weren't so stupid to have nobbled the whole movie https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...9#post19995199, but they've done just that. Twats.

Just got a prompt that my set arrives today. If it does, this will have been the fastest I have ever received anything from Amazon UK in years.

Literally mentioned the opening scenes aboard the Klingon ship and Epsilon 9. So shiny. So smooth. Andreas even provided caps a page or two back, I've even quoted them just 14 posts above yours. And it just carries on from there, on and off throughout the film. One shot might seem okay, the next devoid of filmic texture. One might have just a little off the top, another a lot more than that.
