^ I'm still waiting for your head to explode with this pandering of streaming virtues.

I have my ATV4k synced with Xcode HUD to verify detailed streaming statistics against any streaming versus media that I have access to. Use the Oppo's expand info for comparisons of bitrate.

It’s Vilya I’m worried about. His jumping to the defence of streaming is a little alarming!

Right?

On a forum named blu-ray which is a disc format. Hello? Its quite alarming but does provide for some interesting, albeit goofy takes on things.

He'd better not venture over to the AV science forum with any of this. It wouldnt go well, LOL.

Just another one that appears to not understand disc ≠ streaming pay TV.

Soon I am going to ask the mods to change the title from Digital & Physical: The Future of Home Video Discussion Thread to Digital EST & Physical: The Future of Home Video Discussion Thread

I believe it was shortly after watching episode 8 of S3 of Twin Peaks that things hit a rocky patch. We need to pull him out of the Black Lodge and quick! :

No I just thought the fact that you have to go overboard with the streaming soapboxing is funny. It's not like we don't know what's most important to streaming customers is cost, but at the same time there is a lot of us that isn't the top issue whatsoever. It's convenience. For me with this pandemic I look for entertainment through multiple mediums. The media they carry in stores is just some percentage, the "good" content available by streaming is so much. There is no way to make boasting claims one is better than the other as nether during this last year was all sufficient and outmoded the other.

I also don't use boulders to keep family away from me typing on a computer like yourself. You didn't understand the joke in the other thread.

It was to suggest you spend way too much time on the computer posting and researching rather than watch various content.

Neither of you need to worry about me; I support physical media and all that it has to offer as much as I ever have. Anything that I want to truly own I buy on disc as much for the better quality as for the fact that content on disc can not be altered later. I bought 230 titles on disc this year and I bet that number compares favorably with the majority of people posting here.

I simply acknowledged that streaming is easy to use (because it is) and that digital purchases, when priced the same as a rental, make more sense than paying for a one time rental. As I have said before: I wish to see all that I want, but I do not want to own all that I see.

I also like being able to share my digital collection with my friends... all of whom are practicing social distancing. This way I can still share movies with them until in person group viewings are safe again. Having remote access to a digital collection is great when away from home, too.

We have never watched a streaming movie if we have the same movie on disc. For a long time I just gave away my codes included with my disc but stopped bothering when folks started refusing them for free. So I started redeeming my codes and no longer have a stack of them in my desk drawer. For a time I used to compare the stream version to the disc but concluded it was just a waste of time. The disc was always better.

Do you do 3D? If so there there is no contest between a stream and a disc. AFAIK disc is still the only way to get frame packed 3D and lossless audio.
Yes, I have a 3D HDTV (bought in 2013), and that's one advantage 3D BD has over streaming. Also as I said in one of my previous post, there is no way any streaming site could have the capability of putting Akira's 192 KHz/24-bit hypersonic Japanese audio on there without breaking the bandwidth. See this is why streaming can't handle BD when it comes to audio. Akira proves it.

Also I mentioned in my previous post, I expressed concern about streaming sites facing outages in the future, and the same can be said about internet outages. Well I was watching several local news video on Youtube about internet outages, and website service outage:

If what you saw in the video really scared you, I would be the same. If I was a Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Video Prime, or any streaming subscribers. I would be very concern about any potential service and internet outages that can happened in the future. It's not only premium streaming sites, but any Digital HD copy streaming like Vudu, Movie Anywhere can also be victim of service and internet outage. Meaning I can't access my Jaws digital UHD on Vudu if there was a internet outage or Vudu faced a service outage.

No it won't. Subscription prices have already been going up. That hasn't changed The Importance Of Video Streaming Attributes which will remain the same. It's just an expanded version of the Price, Convenience, Content, Quality hierarchy that Joe Public subscribes to. That's the reason why DVD continues to outsell BD: Price & Content as in lower and more of.

Joe Public isn't concerned about what's on BD. If he was, then BD sales would be booming instead of falling.

So I was about to order the two subs I've had my eye on from Monoprice but they increased the price on it and also charge for shipping, when they didn't. Now good news is that they are actually local down here and are roughly 40 miles away from me. They offer free will call/pick-up, so when the price goes down, I will come back and use that option.

OK, well how do you explain SD BD? Several companies have dropped or reduced DVD authorship and focused more on SD BD like Sentai filmwork and Discotek. They're making use of SD BD in a very creative way and can act as a "replacement" for DVD, I mean:

Answerman: What Determines Whether An Older [anime] Show Should Be Released as SD-BD?

Answerman from 2017: Why Is Sentai Filmworks Phasing Out DVDs?

Anime News Network: Discotek Runs Poll for Possible Standard Definition BD Releases

See that, if companies that license and distribute anime like Discotek, Sentai Filmworks can scrap DVD and go for SD BD for their SD material, then maybe it's not crazy for in the future if more companies may scrap DVDs and go for SD blu-ray as a alternative for SD material. Of course, they'll keep BD around for 1080p and 4K material.

I mean look Discotek has already announce these items getting SD BD release, no DVD release:

Yep see that, all these old anime shows from Discotek, they're all going to get SD BD release, there is no plan for these shows to get a DVD releases. DVDs aren't going to survive with UHD TVs (including 8K UHD TVs) going to become a new change in the future. DVDs aren't going to survive with the UHD TV when it comes to picture/video quality.

My point about streaming, there are too many cons over pros that will make people think twice about BD. Video quality is one of them, yes the cost will always come with the territory. But there's other consideration that streaming will faced problem(s) in the near future, I already pointed out services and internet outages. There will be other problem for streaming in the near future. And I know for sure subscription price will increase in the near future.

We have a sticky thread that tracks disc sales every week. Let me know the number of times BD outsold DVD will you. And you can use 2019 if you want to avoid the pandemic anomaly.

It came close for me too. Second to Midsommar. Lords Of Chaos completed my top 3.

All great points. The streaming posse keep ignoring that there is a lot of great content that simply cannot be streamed. It’s not available. Doesn’t matter how fast your internet is. Doesn’t matter if you’re subscribed to all 27 services. You can’t stream certain content and might never be able to. Or worse, they have it for a while and then pull it. As if the providers won’t do that....they’ve done it before and it will always be an issue.

And the more people that start hogging bandwidth the more the quality of the streams will go down. Why would anyone want to watch the original Star Wars films with compressed video and audio? It’s dumb. Same for any of the other all time greats.

Another point that came up is how much it costs to get a good setup at home going. It really isn’t. Not anymore. For a fairly modest investment you can have a very nice home setup where discs will look great.

Streaming has its place. I use it too. It’s fine for TV a shows, "rentals", and a few movies that you like but don’t need to own. For all the good content and your favorites? Discs rule. End of discussion.
