Sly should've left well alone by that point but I think he was afraid if he didn't make the movie, the producers were going to do some other concept with the character without him that you'd hear about here and there. Still that might've been better than LAST BLOOD, which sucked.
Actually, Last Blood's premise was originally going to be Rambo IV's, but Stallone decided to have it set in Burma instead, and for Last Blood, he went back to that original premise.

He talks about it here at 1:35

I suppose the best place to release this box set would be through a boutique label, like Shout! Factory, KINO Lorber, or Arrow Video.

Unless Lionsgate lost the Studio Canal distribution license for the Rambo films in the states, my bet is on Lionsgate.

But was his premise that he was going to make a movie that really isn't a "Rambo movie" and was just a bad knockoff of Death Wish and Taken? I can appreciate what the setting was supposed to be, but it doesn't change the fact that Last Blood is so badly made and written, and entirely out of whack with the previous 4 films. Even the tone isn't there. There just was no need to make it and the natural end for the character should've been at the end of 4.

Nobody is taking the Rambo license away from Lionsgate. It's about what venue will be able to sell the most copies.

Best Buy is out, but Walmart is doing quite a lot of exclusives with Lionsgate lately so it would be a natural fit there.

I don't know about that. Cliff told me this in a message:

For the kind of set we’re working on, Walmart really has no interest. We’re talking a full featured box with Dolby Vision, Atmos, 70mm mixes, in box exclusives, etc. That doesn’t appeal to Walmart. When Scream Factory did their amazing Halloween box set, Walmart specifically requested a stripped down 10 disc box because their customers don’t care about special features or extravagant packaging. SteelBooks are one thing, but true collector’s editions are just not their jam.

Yeah, if they offered it as barebones, pan and scan with all 5 movies crammed on ONE DVD, Walmart would be tripping over themselves to get on board with that.

TBH I'm not fussed about it being some super amazing boxset filled with tat. Just gimme the five movies remastered/mastered as best as they could be, collating whatever extras and alternate versions along the way, stick them in five elite cases with OG poster artwork and I'm good. If the elaborateness of the set is what's holding things up then it might be worth paring it down to make it more palatable to the bean counters. What's on the discs is ultimately the most important thing.

It won’t. When Cliff first posted about the set he said that they would be packed in individual cases with newly commissioned art (if that can be done) and or original key art as sleeves to switch them instead of reverse art.
