It seemed more reflective and sparkly on the UHD to me.

I definitely prefer the latest Blu-ray remaster to the UHD, as does Jim over at capedwonder, which tells me absolutely everything I need to know. I muxed in the 6-track mix with the theatrical BD, and I’m good to go. I’ve also made a 5.1 track for the extended cut. So I’m good unless they remaster this yet again, which I doubt will happen.

SR is a complete misfire. It didn't double its production budget in worldwide gross, which almost certainly means it lost money. The intended sequel to it was cancelled to reboot the series from scratch. That doesn't happen to successful films, only to misfires.

Idk, that looks pretty damn impressive to me for 2005-6.

I wish he'd gotten a chance to suit up again. I thought he was pretty good and probably would of nailed the character in a sequel.

But I eventually warmed up to Henry Cavill.

Does the CW count? I didn’t watch it but he appeared as Superman during one of their Crisis on Infinite Earths crossovers. Rumors suggest he will be suiting up again at some point too.

I need to watch that at some point. I haven't watched any Arrowverse shows so it might not make sense to watch the episodes but I really want to see Routh as Superman again.

^ Thanks guys I didn't know about that. I'd like to see his episodes, but I don't I don't think I could get started on the whole Arrowverse thing.

Still I wish he could of had a chance a proper sequel.

I know it's been years since this release came out but I do wanna give my take on it

I do agree it's not perfect and has some issues, the master itself is really good, however the encode is not as good. I blame a lot of the faults of the transfer on Warner's encode. It simply just didn't do the job of properly handing the look of the movie and its wildly inconsistent grain structure.

However I still praise it for restoring a significant amount of detail compared to the overly blown out blu-ray. I also see it as a "could've been a whole lot worse" situation. Be thankful that Warner didn't pull a Universal and nuke the optical shots and didn't do anything like perform wire removal or try to remove the black lines in matte shots.

Now for the audio which is really what I wanna get into. I know that a lot have given its take on how awful the Atmos track is due to being mostly based off of the 5.1 track, but despite what a lot think it's not 100% identical. I actually did notice a couple of the old sound effects were restored compared to the 5.1 track on the BD and old DVD. Most notably the old curtain sounds and projector noise in the very first scene were restored, but that's really mostly what I was able to catch, if any others were restored I couldn't find them. So really I'd say the Atmos track is about 98% identical to the 5.1 track of the old BD.

However that's really the only nice thing I can say about that track. Otherwise, like before, it's ****ing awful. Not gonna go into detail about the amount of changed sound effects but I will say that the way they did it was so sloppy it sticks out like a sore thumb in a lot of instances. But it's not just the sound effects that suck, John Williams' music was also mixed VERY poorly. Pretty much all of the bass is gone and it sounds really thin to my ears as a result. Also the way it was mixed, it doesn't sound native like it does in the 2.0 track from the BD or the DD 5.1 track on this disk. It's also buried by loud sound effects in a lot of instances and is hardly audible as a result. However I ADORE the DD 5.1 track, it doesn't even need to be lossless because it already sounds so good. It sounds so much fuller than the Atmos track and even sounds a lot better than the 2.0 track from the old BD (which apparently was due to being taken from an old LD transfer).

In the end, I'd say this is the best we're gonna get in a while, all faults aside, and I recommend any comic book movie fan add this to their collection.

Funny, I'd say the opposite re: the look of the UHD, the encode to disc itself is fine but the master has a TON of issues. Yeah, I know I'm the first to moan moan moan when they obliterate the opticals with DNR but STM is like the antithesis of that because several of the opticals and dupes in their untouched form look like hot shit. It's almost like an "unrestored" master, I don't mean in terms of dirt and scratches but the things that studios do now to sweeten poor sections of a film.

If you read the notes that come with the films in the Columbia Collection you'll see there are all sorts of things that Sony do as a matter of course (and not just now, but for many years of doing this kind of work) to try and get the possible source material to use for a 4K transfer, like using a higher quality interpositive or separations to replace dodgy old dupe neg sections, as well as the kind of 'clean up' work done on heavy opticals by other studios to reduce matte lines, transparencies and whatnot.

But this, there's absolutely nothing like that going on and there's some weird stuff like the vertical bands during that iconic 'sunrise' shot at the end, plus the now plainly visible garbage mattes during the flight of Supes' pod from Krypton. The worst thing is that when they did the Special Edition of STM they created a C roll of fixes - including using an interpositive to replace a poor dupe neg section in Luthor's lair - which they could've easily called upon to just drop in a much improved version of whatever shot into this 4K master but nope, they stuck rigidly to what was conformed into the OG neg for this transfer and that's been a little bit annoying about Warners' new transfers over the years (but then they rebuilt the opticals in fookin Shawshank Redemption, go figure).

People might then say "well it wouldn't be the original version then, would it?" but this happens so often on Old Movies now that they're practically Special Editions and I'm not gonna lie: as long as it's germane to the original shot or is just a higher quality piece of film than what's physically contained in the OG neg then I'm fine with that. And that they literally had reels of film for STM that contained these fixes but didn't use them is so annoying. Maybe it's a good thing that Nolan ain't at Warners no more, he can stick his "unrestored" ethos up his arse.

some of it was their encode though, like in a couple of moments one of my friends pointed out that the grain looked blocky

but yea, I feel this is the best we're gonna get for a while

I’ll never understand why they chose to needlessly CGI some of those basic flying close up shots of him. There’s at least 3 or 4 of them.

Like, just get him to lie down on a green table and put his fist in the air. I promise you it will cost a fraction compared to the army of animators and it will look 50x better.

Just my .02

Or you can talk about the 1978 movie since this is a thread about it?

Brandon Routh just starred in a Hallmark Christmas movie about cats my wife turned on for a minute. Even that triggered horrendous memories of Singer's disaster.

Oh no! How can you ever survive off topic conversations in threads on Blu-ray forum? It only happens every day.
