I know nothing about the Marvel comics and had never even heard of Guardians Of The Galaxy but the trailer made it my most anticipated of the year. Plus I have enjoyed each Marvel film so far. Perhaps not being a fan of comics helps. Same thing with The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings, I saw the films first and love them but tried to read the books and was bored.

So, here's hoping to have two solid films on back to back weekends.
As much as I've enjoyed the Phase One / Two movies, I wish Marvel was going to keep Guardians distinct from the others....

We all knew it was leading to this. Guardians have to be a part of the overall narrative, because of their ties to Thanos. This feels like the most complete and separate film, and its connection doesn't hurt the film. But it's good to see it still has its ties.

I just think it'd be good for Marvel to have the confidence to have an entry in the MCU without ties to IM / Thor / Cap / Avengers. If they can change Thor / Capt America, they can have a standalone movie

It's standalone, even if it has a few ties. This is probably the most standalone entry in the whole franchise. But this is just that, a franchise. The MCU will continue being that way. Some movies will still be more standalone than others, but it's still going to be part of the bigger universe.

I don't know. I like that it's one big universe... just like the comics.

Characters can have solo adventures... or they can come together for the big events or threats.

I think that would be a huge mistake. Then every subsequent film would have to be defined as "in-continuity" or not. Imagine trying to explain that to the uninitiated. Films can be standalone in nature, they just have to not explicitly contradict continuity. Not every film is explicitly about Avengers set-up. From Walts' posts, it sounds like GotG is doing exactly that.

Hope that's the case. Guardians looks strong enough to not need the reliance of the other movies. Will find out Thursday, can't wait!

When I was watching Dawn of the Planet of the Apes in UltraAVX (Canada's RPX) they showed the IMAX trailer with alternating aspect ratios for some reason. Is there a chance the alternating ratios are not IMAX exclusive?

knowledge or speculation?

I'm assuming Avengers 2 related as Cap 1 had, as the last movie before Avengers 1

I'd never heard of them until the movie announcement 2 years back, but I now have a small few comics and runs based on version of of the team - I have too admit the Rocket and Groot ones are my fave
the whole premise of the team is so different and quirky, I just cant get enough.

it will actually be my first marvel movie where I know about the characters already - all other MCU movies were brand new too me (well, phase one anyway) - so it will be interesting to see how it holds up viewing it through geek eyes rather than movie-fan only eyes

exactly why I love the MCU - shared universes rock (its also one of the lesser reasons I love Kevin Smith movies, though he doesnt really do the Jersey stuff anymore)

speculation - would make the most sense to start a tie into Avengers 2, but cant see how as Thanos has been confirmed for Avengers 3....still, we have Thanos rear his head 2 phases early so who knows

I was not that familiar with them either. the earth mightiest heroes: the avengers. had an episode with them in it in the second season. I didn't know that they were the guardians of the galaxy until later when the movie was being made. I went back and watch that one again.

Really looking forward to GOTG; it looks like a great pastiche of Star Wars/Star Trek/Farscape, while still being somewhat original & humorous.

At the same time, I'm amazed that Marvel/Disney is making a film based on these characters. I used to read a lot of Marvel comics as a kid (1980's), and remember very little about these guys...the only exposure I had to them was an old Hulk comic with Rocket Racoon on the cover...I think I read that, but have no idea what the comic was about...

That all being said, I think the fact that I won't have any pre-conceived ideas about the characters prior to seeing the film will help me enjoy this more; I did not like many of other Marvel films (X-men, Iron Man, Avengers) because, based on the comics I used to read, they did not fit my ideas of what the characters should look/act like...

Marvel's trying to hit every genre with their properties so they can have a film/set of characters in every genre. It's a way to extend this cinematic TV show in the future to the point of people not thinking of them as films based on comic books but just films in a specific genre so audiences can have a choice.

The fact that everything is interconnected is a bonus...good and bad, in my opinion.

I think it'll be something Thanos-related, which means it may not have anything to do with Avengers 2 at all, but maybe instead it'll be a stinger for Guardians of the Galaxy 2 or something more down the line in setting up Avengers 3.
