Nice. The effect of Eraserhead is powerful, it's a film very much about the fears of fatherhood, communicating with others and living in a cold, desolate metropolis. Have you seen Other David Lynch works? |

Talk To Her
Not sure if this has been watched by a lot of people in the thread, but it's considered a quisi-essential viewing from all the top tier University courses that I applied to, and entering into next week ![]() Very emotionally complex film from Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodovar, the padre who directed The Skin I Live In, a film that's very polarising on here, as I can guess this one is/should/will be. ![]() It's essentially about two guys who find their "what seems to be" girlfriends stuck in comas and befriend each other through helping each other through support. But obviously, as the film goes on, not everything is as it seems with one of the characters. Not everyone will be able to really follow the direction the film enters as it goes to be morally dark areas and asks you to really invest in its complex characters no matter what they do. ![]() If you can get past the dark parts of the film, you should be rewarded with a deeply rich and emotional drama, with multi layered characters, connections and an interesting plot with a backdrop of some thought provoking themes. ![]() It's not perfect, it's non-linear narrative is a bit jarring in parts, and the whole thing is a tad to sexualised in parts, with a really strange out of place homage to silent filmmaking in the film that captures a characters struggle and state of mind, as well as some foreboding, but it's just a prolonged and drastic change of style for a bit of symbolism. ![]() Reccommended. ![]() 9/10 |

The tip of the iceberg, I was communicating my immediate feelings toward the sights and sounds, it's such a labyrinth of a picture that it was foolish of me to encapsulate Eraserhead in a sentence.

There's still quite an adventure to be had diving into his filmography.
The Straight Story is a must. I put it off forever and regret getting around to it so late (relatively, that is) The Elephant man is quite an achievement too! The Pilot for Twin Peaks (maybe the best pilot I've ever seen IMHO) These next three are must sees but difficult to fully appreciate first time around (at least for me) Lost Highway (mind bending) Inland Empire (much hated, shot on hanheld three hour mind@$&k) Wild at Heart (definitely a visceral experience!) These next two are for diehards: Dune (the notorious flop, with much unintentional humour) Twin Peaks (just falls flat with none of his usual flair) |

The Karate Kid 2 (1986)
Sometime a second movie base on the same subject can turn out to be boring. At other time it can even be better than the first movie. That is the case for me for Karate Kid 2. I always felt that this second movie about Mr. Myagi and Daniel-san was a much stronger one. Returning to Okinawa both characters are face with a personal enemy. Both Sato and his nephew only see honor from a personal point of view and fail to see that the actions they take actually destroy the honor they hold so dear. But in typical coward fashion (it's interesting to see that the two characters who call others cowards are actually the biggest cowards in the story) they blame others instead of looking at what they do. The movie as a great lesson to be learn without trying to rub your face into it. |

I read Kerouac's novel many years ago, and I was very interested in seeing the new film adaptation of On the Road. I attended the North American premier on TIFF's first night.
The movie was all right. It certainly made me feel the vibrant intellectual pull of post-war New York, the uniquely American appeal of the open road and the draw of the West, the (not always) youthful indulgence of booze, cigarettes, drugs, and sex, and the flowering literary development of the Beats. But there was just something, hard to pin down, that was missing. There were some strong performances, with Kristen Stewart (whom I'd never seen before) quite good. An interesting film, and definitely worth the time. ![]() |

Last night I attended the North American premier of Paul Thomas Anderson's highly anticipated The Master. I regret to say that I feel this film was overly long, unfocused, and badly in need of tighter editing.
As expected, it is a technically accomplished film. It looks great. Phillip Seymour Hoffman does a great job as the pseudo intellectual but charismatic charlatan who attracts a following of gullible hangers-on. I hate to admit it, but Joaquin Phoenix is outstanding as the alcoholic drifter, a nobody who unexpectedly becomes attached to this unusual group. The movie is terribly long. There came a point where I wondered how much more the director could show us to make his points. Certainly, Anderson treats his audience as adults, which is all too rare in Hollywood. But the extended scene featuring Phoenix walking back and forth across a room, under Hoffman's instructions, to describe a window and a wall made me feel that's how the audience was being treated. ![]() ![]() |

I saw Dredd today at TIFF. I will say that this was not terrible. It was, to put it more positively, a guilty pleasure. But let's not mistake this picture - or this character, for that matter - as some philosophically profound statement. I've never been impressed with Garland. This movie does frequently look very cheap. It's just a way to spend an hour and a half watching guns being fired, nothing more.
