I'm very disappointed nobody has chimed in with The Fish That Saved Pittsburgh.

Mostly revolves around betting on basketball and hanging out with KG, close enough

I don't understand why Avatar (the James Cameron one from 2009) is so popular, when it's such a boring movie! (Okay fair enough, it's my personal opinion, but still).

So, from my point of view, there's nothing really special about the plot, story, the "soldiers were lied to and the humans are the bad guys" twist, or the special effects. It's all very typical Hollywood bland that fails to capture my imagination.

Oh I agree I never liked it at all back in 2009. I just feel that it's empty take away the effects and there is nothing. I get that people enjoy it and I have tried to watch it again, but I turned it off. For me it's Cameron's worst film.

I think you'd probably have a hard time finding anyone who'd put it on their 'All Time Top 10' list. You're right about the unoriginal plot - it's Pocahontas, or Dances with Wolves in space - but the effects were very impressive at the time (& most still are) & it was the big screen 3D 'experience' that pushed it over the top, got people back into cinemas, & made it such a box office success. That & the fact that no-one does action like James Cameron. Is it the best movie ever made? No. But it's a great ride.

I'm very interested to see if the sequel does anywhere near similar business after the (no doubt huge) opening weekend.

What prompted me to write my post was a brief glance at the IMDb user reviews for the movie, where the first few hits praise the movie so highly you'd think it had brought world peace or something.

Perhaps the effects are good? I'm not really sure, I'm the kind of guy that's easily dazzled by flashy things (see my comment earlier on 300), but Avatar? Nah, that gave me nothing, not a single moment of that movie impressed me much, and that's saying something when I'm able to find enough entertainment value in Fast & Furious whatever number it's up to now to continue watching (it's not the kind of movie I seek out, but it's serviceable enough to watch).

Take away the effects and you're left with a Leo's Carax movie.

Hammer's Phantom Of The Opera is better than both the 1923 original and the 1941 adaption.

Up until your post I had no idea there even was a Hammer version of Phantom of the Opera, so thanks for that!

Tracked down a copy & watched it last night. What a great flick! Loved it. Only 2 small niggles for me:
[Show spoiler]
1. The finale felt very rushed & the reveal of the Phantom's face far too brief, especially as they'd just spent about 15 very long minutes (of an 84 minute film) showing the actual opera.
2. Michael Gough's odious character didn't get any comeuppance.

Other than that, superb stuff. Herbert Lom: so underrated.

Off to track down the Robert Englund version now as I realised I've never seen that one either...

Temper your expectations for the Robert Englund Phantom of the Opera. It isn't exactly what it sounds like. "Robert Englund Phantom of the Opera" makes one picture a certain kind of movie and (to me at least) it really was not that. It's certainly worth giving a chance though..

I can respect Invisible Man at number 1. it feels like the staple character is the most defined.
