I often want to change out my projector for a direct view set (for better HDR) and I don't think I will mind going to a small screen like 85" but I do think I'll mind when a movie like Jaws has black bars. Of course a TON of movies have Variable Aspect Ratio and that's something to keep track of.
If you had bought the "The Wall" TV like you once contemplated you would have a direct view TV even larger than your projector screen.

Your interest in physical media is my guess.

With that size screen steaming must look ok. Thats the size of my new monitor. It's a 4K monitor and has HDR (400) but ... I'm just using it as a monitor. I haven't tried watching video on it apart from YouTube tutorials and such.

With a projector screen Steaming < Upconverted Blu < UHD and the differences are clear generally.

I still want it.

A direct view 2.40 screen would work.

Heck, I think I could enjoy a X900h unit fully... I'm just not sure about scope movies on it. I bet it's fine.

I can't imagine myself ever watching movies on a TV that small ever again. I have not used a TV that diminutive as my primary TV since the 1980s.

I sit about 9' from my 85" TV and it dominates most of my field of view. My 60" TV in my office seems almost too small now; I mainly use it for 3D movies.

To think that my first “home theatre” TV was 20” 4:3 CRT and a LaserDisc player.

I would love to have a nice projector set-up, but I don't see that happening. I love watching movies on a large screen and having a projector would probably make my 85" TV seem inadequate. These ever larger screen sizes have spoiled me forever; I do not want to go down in size; gimme bigger bigger biggest!

My first home theater was comprised of a GE 19" CRT TV, a Curtis Mathes Hi-Fi VCR (which cost $800 in 1986; that's $1889 today) and a Carver amp and pre-amp with a pair of Polk SDA 2 speakers. I am still using those speakers today.

By the time I owned a laserdisc player in the early 90s I had moved up to a boat anchor of a TV: a 32" hernia inducing Toshiba CRT. I remember being amazed at how big it was with no idea back then what was to come. I still have 179 laserdiscs and a working Pioneer DVL-909.

Researching the Stewart Filmscreen StudioTek 130 G4 as we post. Trying to decide if I want to forgo the masking so I could install a 54 x 127 (138" dia) 2.35 screen to replace my 52 x 122 (132.6 dia) 2.35 screen.

The small screen post intrigued me so I setup my UHD player to my 27" monitor.

It works and so far it's the only use for the monitor's limited HDR-ness.

It's fun to try new things.

All the nostalgia about first setups makes me remember how many times I thought I could afford to buy a Stereo VCR. I never actually got one... I went from my mono VCR and 13" TV to a PC DVD kit with a hardware decoder board for my PC.

With my screen I just have curtains. I open them for 2.40 and pull them to mask for 16:9. I could have pulled them more for The Lighthouse which is basically square.

Do you game on the monitor? If so, what graphics card are you using?

I don't. I don't have a GPU. I used to have one.

I have a PS4 (non pro) and Wii U and 2dsxl. For the consoles, I have a small cheap 1080p LCD TV.

This monitor was kind of impulse purchase to be used with a M1 Mac mini I received as a gift.

Gotcha. Since you got a 4K monitor I was just curious which graphics card you might be using.

Another example of what I dislike about streaming, SVOD in particular:

Gone With The Wind edited to reduce its running time on HBO Max:

On HBO Max, the film is about 3hrs, 40mins. It's listed as 3hrs, 53mins everywhere else...
While some may not miss the overture and the intermission music, I feel it sets the mood and therefore is integral to the movie. The larger point is that this illustrates yet again how streamed content can be butchered for any reason whatsoever by either the studios or the streaming provider. You may or may not care about what was removed in this instance, but eventually something that you do care about will be.

This can't happen with my discs and that alone is why I prize owning them. No level of streaming quality, past, present, or future can be more valuable than my having absolute control over the content that I have purchased on physical media. Rented discs offer the same control while being rented. I want to see, and hear, the entire movie not some truncated streaming version.

Thought some of you may get a chuckle about this English Electric 8 port ethernet switch. They have a full page ad in Sound & Vision, cost about $600 US. And you thought you had heard everything while streaming audio.

Vilya,

I spent time yesterday auditing and organizing my movies and it was very rewarding. My "collection" on here is accurate (aside from old DVDs that have been in storage that aren't represented.) Now, I see the numbers of your media and realize the scope of your collection.

Wow. Congratulations on building that library! I wouldn't blame you for never subscribing to any streaming services.

When you optimize all the wrong things.

I guess it's fair to bank on people's mis understandings and FUD. I can put my ethernet switch on top of the laundry kit with sneakers in the dryer and this txt will come though looking just exactly the same.

See, this is where that talk of Augmented Reality glasses comes in. You could have a 100-120 inch screen regardless of room size.
That’s why I think it has half a chance of stealing market share form actual TVs in a 5-10 year timeline. Once the tech is capable of functioning as a PC, games console and entertainment system.

Would like to know the views of Wendell (amongst our other friends) who have a big passion for the equipment side of things. Would they ever accept just putting on their AR glasses and pulling a app up rather than their current situation. Don’t think I ever would.
