I think I had the 909 LD player too.

However, ... I bought mine well after I was into DVD. I bought the LD player for a handful of things I wanted that were not available any other way.

One of those would be Star Wars. I got the "faces" LD copy of the trilogy. I also had Laurie Anderson's Home of the Brave which never made it to a better format and Pink Floyd's Delicate Sound of Thunder that only recently got re-worked on a better format.

That was the 5 LDs I had ever.... I don't like thinking about laserdiscs because they looked pretty bad (sounded fine.)

That’s why I think it has half a chance of stealing market share form actual TVs in a 5-10 year timeline. Once the tech is capable of functioning as a PC, games console and entertainment system.

Would like to know the views of Wendell (amongst our other friends) who have a big passion for the equipment side of things. Would they ever accept just putting on their AR glasses and pulling a app up rather than their current situation. Don’t think I ever would.
Just realised a huge negative. Our disc collections would be rendered obsolete if this hit mainstream. It would obviously be streaming media.

AR glasses could easily have a wireless connection to a box with HDMI input. That would be a must for them to work with video games so I think there will be plenty of glasses that do exactly that.

I think by the time they are mainstream (if they ever do become mainstream) streaming subscription game services will be well established. Hopefully tv screens and projectors will always be here.

The two major factors against AR glasses are whether everyone will be happy to wear specs (obviously many people have contacts because they don’t like glasses)
The gains are going to have to be huge.

The second biggest factor is reflections. All that image projection will play havoc with glasses in certain light conditions.

You guys talking about Home Theaters, I didn't consider that until I had my 50" Mitsubishi Rear Projection HDTV. That was in San Jose, CA, and I hooked up a VCR and later a DVD Player. I always said bigger is better!

I still own that laserdisc and I have backed it up to DVD media. Always nice to find another Laurie Anderson fan. I got to see her perform that tour live in Chicago at the State Street Theater; I had so much fun that night!

Something becoming "mainstream" does not have to mean the end of other things. Streaming has been "mainstream" for years and our ability to watch our discs, and to buy more discs, remains.

Glasses that could give you a screen that can adjust in size on the fly would be a killer app for AR glasses. Every member of the family would need one to watch a film together but everyone has a smartphone these days. Maybe smart glasses will be the same?
Why would a person buy a tv when they already have the AR glasses and can simply fix the virtual screen to their wall? It would mean more space in the living room but still a huge screen. The app would be super cheap versus the hundreds or thousands of HT gear.

This was the main reason I bought a PSVR back in the day, to be able to watch 3D movies on a simulated IMAX screen. But the quality was horrible and the screen door effect very distracting. That's why I returned it. So the quality would have to be much better than it currently is.

I have a Rift S now but no Blu-ray or UHD drive. If I ever get one I may see if there is an app on that that will allow me to watch content on a simulated screen.

Just ordered the The Alfred Hitchcock Classics Collection, Friday the 13th, Part 3 3-D, One-Eyed Jacks (The Criterion Collection) and Silent Madness 3-D from Vinegar Syndrome.

Watched the UHD BD of The Beastmaster last night.

Really glad to see some old catalog coming to disc. Would love to see Dragonslayer, Grey Owl, Last Of The Dogmen, The Mountain Men, The Neverending Story, Quest For Fire, Return To Snowy River, The Saint, Smilla's Sense Of Snow, The Keep and The Sword And The Sorcerer make it to BD or UHD BD. Have these on DVD with some on DVD and streaming.

Maybe because they don't like wearing the things?

Maybe because they will cause headaches like some people experienced with 3D glasses?

Maybe because people that already have to wear glasses won't want to wear AR glasses over their prescription lenses?

Maybe because they like having an actual surround sound set-up and don't want to listen via earplugs or headphones?

Maybe because watching a film in front of an actual screen is more social without everyone's head covered in AR glasses and earplugs? Kinda hard to have a conversation with headphones on and with glasses directly projecting an image onto your retina likely makes seeing each other difficult.

For whatever reason, not everyone will want these and more traditional viewing and listening methods will be marketed to them.

Why would they get headaches? It’s no different to wearing glasses.

AR glasses would be prescription glasses. Apple are not daft enough to think that the double glasses look would ever catch on.

The AR glasses would be social. You will be able to see everyone’s face as you do now with regular glasses. The screen can be locked to a wall in a 3D space much as we currently have our TVs on a HT stand or above a fireplace.

The glasses could easily wirelessly connect to a speaker, sound bar or personal assistant with audio capability.

Yeah, it’s cool for 3D films though. I think by next gen, we should have 4K screens which will allow full HD quality.

I only mentioned headaches because some people experienced headaches from wearing 3D glasses; mere speculation on my part.

If AR glasses provide an image equal to or better than other display technologies, then my interest would rise, but they must work with my surround sound set-up and with my physical media collection for me to consider them seriously. If using them involves paying Apple any kind of recurring fee, then my interest would evaporate right there.

Even then, I dislike wearing anything on my head for any longer than I have to; it is just one of my quirks.

Personally, I would rather have one of those tiny devices that project a holographic image of any desired size and that can be viewed without the need for any special glasses like what was shown in the movie Minority Report.

So why do you want a physical TV instead of AR glasses?

I know what you are saying. That’s Apples job to convince us that all the possibilities outweigh the inconvenience.

Personally, I’m just attached to my HT. it’s that simple. I struggle to get my head around how a virtual HT would work. It doesn’t stop me asking the questions though. AR could well be a smartphone replacer, if we get to that stage all bets are off.

Oh, she cancelled a concert at Dartmouth college that I had tickets too so she hosted a talk about her work with NASA that was open to the public and at the talk I asked her to sign my copy of her "nerve bible" which she did. She did the concert at a later date. I caught her 4 times in concert.

I still have a backup of the LD as a file but no longer have the LD or the player. (shhhh.... secrets)

You certainly have me beat. I don't have her autograph and I only got to see her live that one time.

Do you own this disc from the Criterion Collection:

It has been on my wishlist for some time; have you seen this and, if so, what did you think?
