in most cases i think they send a replacement to you as opposed to repairing the same unit.

and i would call sony and speak to customer service not tech support.
I bought this ps3 3 years ago used and have no warranty on it so I think it's going to cost me more than $99.

And I've opened the ps3 to put in my own larger hard drive.

and mine was purchased in 2007 (warranty long expired) as long as u havent broke the seal on the cover they may replace it for free.

since i broke the seal they offered me replacement for $99 including shipping, not a bad deal either way. good luck

make sure u swap out the larger drive, if u are sending it in to sony. otherwise, u may lose it.

Talked with sony and they offered to repair my model for $129 but I figured I might as well get a slim model because

1) It would be brand new
2) It would be under warranty
3) There is no guarantee how long my ps3 would last if they managed to repair it.

In case you didn't know, that isn't what SCEA means by "opening your system". Everyone is allowed to replace the HDD. By open, SCEA means removing the warranty sticker and actually taking the system apart.

Yeah I realized that after I posted.

as i said they likely wont repair it, they will send u replacement. it may last u until the PS4 comes out.

however, i would hold off getting a new PS3 there is a new model coming out soon with a price reduction (rumored).

did u speak with tech support or customer support?

i spoke with customer support and they offered me $99 and had i not torn the warranty sticker would have replaced the unit for free.

I talked with customer support and they told me $129 and asked if I wanted to speak with tech support but I didn't want to since I knew what the problem was and what they were going to say.

I don't really mind paying for a brand new console. I was reading that Besty Buy will give some of your money back if you buy a PS3 and then a price drop occurs during your 1st month of purchase. Besides I have the game Catherine coming tomorrow and I really want to play that.

This might sound stupid, but I don't guess you have another HDMI cable you could switch out to see, do you?

I would unplug the cable and reattach, maybe it's loose. Hopefully its nothing serious like a damaged port :/

Lately, the fan on my 40GB fatty has been loudly spinning up to max frequently. It usually happens about 10 minutes into a DVD or after playing certain games for bit. This is the first time the fan has behaved this way in the three and half years I've had the console and I'm fearful that a YLOD is around the corner. I opened it up yesterday to clean out any accumulated dust, but there was not much to speak of. Is there anything else I should do to try and head off a YLOD?

Ok... I read the stickied tips and actually about a year ago used them to replace the laser in my 60 Gb PS3 with great results... it is still going strong. Thanks Again! The instructions and videos were great. Now I have a similar problem and first wanted to isolate the issue.

My kids have a stock CECH-2001B Slim PS3 (160gb?)... It is experiencing failure to recognize the Blu-rays (movies and PS3 games) when warm and from a cold boot (and cool) will sometimes "see" and play about 5 minutes. It plays DVDs fine. I have cleaned it (vacuum) and even tried the Maxell blu-ray cleaner disk. No change. The playstation is about 1 year to 1 and 1/2 yo old.

Q1. Is it safe assume that it is the laser as described in the sticky or is there something else I can try? I knew this was a "relatively" common failure among the early-gen PS3s failures but was a little surprised to see it happen on a slim. I guess this is my luck (2 out of 3 PS3s now).

Q2. How does the laser replacement work on slims or is it worth attempting? I am thinking if I can manage it like last time with my time and 50-75 dollars it might make sense to try but if not, I think I would rather find a deal on a new or refurbished that I can port to and call this an expensive DVD player. (I'm not a fan of the Sony's 150$ deal unless it includes porting over).

Q3. Curiosity... Is this a part failure brought on by heat? I have read the air flow design of the PS3 in a ventilated area should be sufficient but I am a bit jaded now.

Thoughts, tips, suggestions, all welcome... Thanks in Advance!

If you don't do something soon, you will get the YLOD. I would highly recommend opening your PS3, and placing in new thermal paste. Get something good like Arctic Silver off Ebay or from Amazon. There are guides on Youtube to do redo the thermal paste. Also, I would consider adding a fan mod when you open the machine to redo the thermal paste. A good fan mod can be found here: http://www.sudburymods.com . The fan mod will help prevent your PS3 from heating up to begin with. You can see a video of the fan mod on the site.

Until you do this, I would stand your PS3 on end, so the heat vents out the top. I would also limit your time using the console until it is fixed.

Good luck.

Default Laser and Key question. Have searched forum. Please help.

Hi all. I have a CECHP01. Bluray board BMD-031. Has 2 and A in circles on top and B in circle on bottom. I have had it for about 2 years. Played it 2 or 3 hours a week. Never had a problem with freezing. Went to turn ps3 on..had Black Ops inside..But no icon came up. Tried all the tricks to eject..no luck.. Took it apart to get disc out and reset tray. My ps3 will not pull a disc in or eject. When i try to put a disc in the blue light comes on but will not try to pull disc in. The disc will not spin. I see the laser pulse up and down once or twice but thats all it does. It will not move up or down on its tracks. I did move the tray to the correct up position. I see the load clock in the corner spin for awhile then it stops. Whenever i try to play a demo or downloaded game the screen goes blank and the system completly freezes. My picuters were intact as well as my movies. I tried resetting defaults and also i entire system restore with no luck.

So here are my questions

Is it my laser causing this problem. Will a new laser fix demos not playing?
If not the laser is it the blu ray drive board and if so how can i fix myself? Since there is no BGA, which part has the "Key"
If not either then what do you think it is and how can i attempt to fix myself.

I shed a tear when it happened..lol

Thanks for your help.

This doesn't sound like a laser issue to me as the laser does not affect the tray mechanism. Sounds like you should try to get a replacement unit as the drive could be toast.

A1: Yes, sounds like the laser.

A2: I'm not sure about the Slim models, but its probably the same basic concepts just different parts.

A3: If I had the answer to that, this would be a lot shorter thread.

I agree. I have had not luck finding info on this model. Is it an oddball? Its 160gb fatie not slim. It dont have the optical disc sensor. The br board is bmd-031. I think a different version of the same board is used in the slim. There is one thing I can find no answer to..My bluray board has no BGA so which part has the "key" for this model...Can anyone help. Thanks!!
