A friend of mine in California is out buying a new OLED TV. I expect to be asked how to set it up over the phone. I hope I can get away with just sending him a link to recommended settings for the make and model of the TV that he gets.

I have movies to watch; he can read off of a webpage as well as I can.

Do a live video then it’s way easier. I did this with my sister and it worked a treat.

I agree that the studios are making the best of a bad situation right now, but they hold all the cards when it comes to how they release their movies. They will do whatever is to their advantage.

I do not think that direct to digital distribution will favor the making of expensive blockbuster films, though. They could be a casualty of that business model.
That’s the biggest tragedy that these streamers don’t understand. The loss of the big budget movie.

And how does that free me to watch movies?

Sending the weblink is far easier.

please stop comparing an occasional delay to EVERYTHING being delayed for 2 years. Your disdain of digital is making you sound ridiculous. After last year and after what WB is doing this year, I think more and more people will be accustomed to watching from home. not to sound like you, but I'm very worried about the future of exhibition.

I do think studios should relinquish and let some films go straight do digital. Like does The Kingsman really need to be delayed for years and years? Just put it on Hulu at this point.

and yes i understand some films are contractually obligated to have a theatrical release, but at some point these movies begin to lose their luster. at least in my eyes.

Sometimes when people only care about their choice, they no longer care about anything else. Consequences be damned so long as they're only paying $7 per month.

I had this thought the other day - how crazy would it be if the release date for Avatar 2 syncs up perfectly for when everything returns to 100% normalcy and becomes the new highest grossing movie of all time?

What I am trying to explain to you is that your scenario is incredibly unhealthy for the film industry. It’s not about disc v digital. It’s about film in general.

It’s not a sustainable model. Even now, Disney are having to compensate actors for films going straight to streaming.

Use your head man.

Temporary, it can’t sustain itself. Short term gain, long term pain.

Besides, I don’t project streaming, it’s naff. Will wait for 4K disc.

Your utopia couldn’t exist. Cinemas wouldn’t stay open on the off chance that people will go. It needs to make it’s money.
Actors would be paid for less for example, studios would have to get used to far less money. That would result in way fewer blockbusters and any films that require expensive sequences.
At least this Thread is back on track, let's see if we can keep it here. Vilya you are going by old facts, this pandemic has brought on new ways of thinking. Everybody keeps saying when things get back to normal, well don't you think there is going to be a New Normal? That Genie is out of the bottle and it's not going back in. The Studios are finding new revenue streams and they are not going to give them up. Some form of Theatrical will remain, but Streaming has many forms!

Don't worry Steedeel the Studios will be fine, the Film Industry will survive. They might have to cut back on their Billion Dollar Blockbuster Super Hero Movies, but maybe they will make better Budget Movies. People like good stories that make great Movies. Just remember it's All Digital Now!

The fact about disc sales and box office performance being directly related are not "old" as in no longer valid, but they are well established. Disc sales do better when there are brand new movies being offered. True then and true now. The sales data demonstrates this every single time. When new hit movies are released on disc, sales improve dramatically. Very few catalog titles can drive sales like a brand new blockbuster will.

No one said anything about studios giving up streaming revenue and they certainly will not give up on the very lucrative earnings that come from the box office.

Streaming has the same forms as it always has: SVOD, VOD, AVOD, and digital purchases. Nothing new about any of them unless you want to consider premium VOD, or PVOD, as new when it is really just a more expensive variation of VOD. Live sporting events have been offered this way for years already; nothing new about the concept.

People are social creatures; not only will they want to see movies at the theater again they will want to go to plays, concerts, sporting events, conventions and more. Watching from home via streaming, cable TV, or even by disc, does not provide the same experience.

After the 1918 pandemic life returned to normal; people did not stay huddled at home; they resumed all of their favorite pastimes. After this pandemic people will venture forth again rejoining the larger world and they will rediscover how much they enjoy going to all manner of public events. The cure for cabin fever has always been to leave the damn cabin.

The film industry will be fine because they enjoy a diverse array of revenue sources; they will abandon none that are significantly profitable.

Your trademark comment that it is "all digital" is as meaningless as ever because something being digital does not make it automatically equal in quality to other digital things. An SD stream is digital and so is a UHD stream, but they are hardly equal.
