Bought 4 titles from the Amazon sale:

Blow Out
Double Life of Veronique
Naked Kiss
White Material

Haven't seen these and I hope they're all great.

To Cocophone:

Fish Tank is an outstanding film! The plot point you are asking about is an integral part of the story that is shot in a very respectful way.

The Criterion BD is almost flawless (Audio/Video, Supplements), but be warned some viewers have been put off by the aspect ratio. (1.33 to 1, or the old 4 by 3 framing) You will have significant black bars (Pillar) on both sides of the image. This is really no big deal though, and you should not notice as the story pulls you in.

To Jef C:

Have em' all on BD, they are indeed great. Blow Out was my favorite De Palma I've seen, and Double Life of Veronique is a classic. The other two are wonderful as well.

I watched the first half of 8 1/2 last night. I had a difficult time getting into it but will try to watch the second half later this weekend. This may be one that 'grows on you'? Any opinions?

First time I watched it I thought it was tedious and boring. Two years passed, I watched it again and I absolutely adored it. It's definitely a grower.

Not all great films are easy to like. Some most definitely "grow on you" over time. You should absolutely give 8 1/2 another viewing though. Try to remember that Fellini made this film out of his own frustrations with filmmaking and life in general.

Absolutely. I loved many aspects of it, but I found the acting stale and all the characters lacking any motivation for me to care. It took weeks before I started to think about it again and had a strong desire to watch it again. It really is pretty brilliant, and the manifestation of his psych is dazzling. I'd say watch it with an open mind - find what you like and what you dislike and I'm sure it'll grow on you.

Thanks guys. That's the beauty of many of the films in the Criterion Collection. They often get better with repeat viewings.

Garret Brown is awesome in his interview on the Blow Out disc. Definitely the most entertaining of the interviews. Even if you don't care at all about the Steadicam, the interview is well worth a watch.

On a side note, I really wish they had gotten some of the other actors, like Travolta, Franz and (especially) Lithgow to comment on the film.

Hmm... Took a look at my account at Amazon and it looks as if several of the titles I bought at the little Criterion sale the etailer has been holding (and which is continuing, to my surprise) have now shipped after a delay/backorder of a few days. The status of many of these titles still says that they usually ship in few days.

Sale title received:
Blow Out (from a preorder)

Sale titles shipped:
Amarcord
Broadcast News
Le Cercle Rouge
The Double Life of Veronique
Fish Tank
The Seventh Seal
White Material

Sale titles not yet shipped:
Kes
The Leopard
Modern Times
Yojimbo & Sanjuro

Most of these are blind buys, but I'm confident I'll like them for reasons that vary depending on the film.

For any of you that haven't taken advantage of this sale (I have a feeling it's a very small number indeed ), do so now. I wouldn't be surprised if this sale ends this weekend and the prices double.

just finished The Seventh Seal. really enjoyed it. glad i bought it
had a lot of humor in it that i didn't expect and the writing was top notch, and i believe it's biggest strength. glad i picked it up (blind buy). really seems like a film of pure genius, even if i didn't completely understand it on one viewing.

i also think it's much easier to follow and "get into" than Ingmar's Persona, which while great in its own right, confused the fudge out of me and i felt a bit disconnected from it.

DVDBeaver review of Fear & Loathing seems to favour the Universal release for picture quality over the Criterion!? That's a bit of a shame. I'll have to judge for myself.

I'd take anything written on DVDBeaver with a truckload of salt.
