Seeing as how there will be no 8K disc, then the discussion falls under this Sub Forum: Digital & Physical: The Future of Home Video Discussion Thread. The future will be 8K over the internet. How long it takes to get here is the only question.

You even want to tell people how many words they can use, too? You are power hungry, aren't you? Three sentences exceed your attention span, did they?

I was thinking of your comment to Steedeel that he had better retorts in fewer words.

I know most here draw the line with film with physical media, but majority of TV content is via streaming.

Who doesn't admire efficiency?

The intention of his post was just to succinctly dismiss another member's comment whereas I tried to offer an explanation, albeit futile, to compliment my dismissal.

Your second sentence really has nothing to do with the post that Steedeel and I were replying to. TV content was never even mentioned in the post that we were responding to, but as you brought it up here, is that even true? I would guess that the majority of TV content is watched by traditional TV service, be it Pay TV or OTA.

Yikes!

I saw his post, pressed the QUOTE button, started typing, then my phone rang and I spent 5 minutes on the phone, got back to typing, pressed the SUBMIT button and saw you had typed the same thing.

Its also available via many streaming services to watch TV content. I would say that is what I use streaming mostly for news and TV shows, not movies.

There's no denying that enthusiasts will always demand the best. They will always latch on to perceived benefits of their chosen format. Some benefits are real and perceivable (HDR). Other benefits are snake oil (audiophile cables).

I'm more interested in discussing the average consumer and the point of diminishing returns. The folks who can't tell the difference between Netflix and a regular 1080p blu-ray or worse, a DVD. Even if they know about the benefits of UHD, they can't afford or don't think it's worth it to spent $1k+ on a UHD player, receiver, and speakers.

They're the mass market who influence studio decisions.
Yeah, but that’s not you were talking about originally. The masses are happy with any old crap.

Aw shucks, thank you.

Yes, we all know that TV content is available via streaming, but that doesn't answer the larger question as to how is most TV content viewed: by using traditional TV services or by streaming? I don't use that much of either one, so I don't even know anecdotally.

Subscription services main forte is TV series over films.

TV Ratings: Pixar’s ‘Soul’ Tops Nielsen’s Streaming Top 10 Over Christmas
- Variety 1/22/2021

Here’s this week’s Top 10 in full:
  • “Soul” (Disney Plus) (movie) – 1,669 minutes (millions)
  • “The Office” (Netflix) (192 episodes) – 1,435 minutes (millions)
  • “Bridgerton” (Netflix) (8 episodes) – 1,204 minutes (millions)
  • “The Midnight Sky” (Netflix) (movie) – 1,113 minutes (millions)
  • “The Mandalorian” (Disney Plus) (16 episodes) – 1,024 minutes (millions)
  • “How The Grinch Stole Christmas” (Netflix) (movie) – 705 minutes (millions)
  • “The Crown” (Netflix) (40 episodes) – 700 minutes (millions)
  • “Grey’s Anatomy” (Netflix) (366 episodes) – 691 minutes (millions)
  • “Christmas Chronicles 2” (Netflix) (movie) – 660 minutes (millions)
  • “Criminal Minds” (Netflix) (277 episodes) – 651 minutes (millions)

Who hasn't heard about the The Mandalorian, WandaVision, The Witcher, The Crown, etc they are all TV series.

I actually like seeing high quality series over time instead of movies from subscription sites. Game of Thrones is another example.

One thing about "the future" is we won't know about it ahead of time.

There is almost no reason for Vinyl to still exist except people still enjoy it. So simply going by logic and numbers the future is undetermined.

Books still exist and make nice gifts. Which is also true of movies.

There is no fate but what we create.

When all is said and done the ending will come from out of the blu

And today there's a widespread internet outage on the east coast if you're a Verizon customers:

CNN Business article: East Coast hit with massive internet outage, disrupting remote work and virtual school

Widespread Verizon outage reported on East Coast

Widespread internet outages hit northeast U.S.

So yeah, this back my argument and my fear that this is what streaming user will have to endure, plus any future outage from streaming providers like a Netflix outage, or a Disney+ server went down.

So yes, this is one of the reason I hate streaming, because internet outages can and will happen.

Why post the same article 3 times? Once wasn't enough?

Do you also hate Social Media and Forums too? They are also affected by internet outages. As are On-Line Purchasing, On-Line Banking and Investing and a whole host of other services and entertainment that depend on the internet.

Sometimes people like to give you more than source for the news that they are sharing in case someone finds any given source to be suspect.

Internet outages are annoying as hell, but those things that you listed can still be accomplished in other ways while one's home internet service is down.

My mobile phone internet connection allows me to do all of the things that you listed and I can also bank and shop by phone. Yes, I can stream to my phone, but I don't want to watch anything on a 5" screen, or even on my tablet's 10" screen, and my mobile internet plan has very tiny data caps (4 GB per month). My cell phone can create mobile hotspots, too, allowing me to do all of the things that you listed on my home computer as well, but that mobile internet data cap nixes any prolonged streaming or online gaming.

So, really the only things that I can't do when my home internet service is out are streaming movies/ TV shows and online gaming; these are both bandwidth hogs and are best enjoyed on a large screen.

I have never experienced both my home internet and cell service being down simultaneously. My cell service/mobile internet is vastly more reliable than my ISP, too.

You never have had a love-hate relationship, have you? As I said, I have a love-hate relationship with streaming. I have the same love-hate relationship with social media too.

Also you didn't update your profile to tell us how many BD collection you have, that makes me suspicious if you tell any truth about you owning any BD, or if you really have a grudge against physical media.

Cell phone services can face outages too, this happened last year:

Article from Jun 15, 2020: T-Mobile, Sprint, AT&T and Verizon customers report widespread cell service outages

2nd source

This is why a internet outage, and streaming provider outage is not good if you're a Netflix subscriber, or a streaming subscriber regardless if you're Disney+ subscriber, HBO Max subscriber, etc.....

No service outage is good; I was just pointing out that I can do every other online activity, except for streaming and gaming due to them being bandwidth hogs, on my mobile internet service while I wait for my home internet service to be restored.

While any service can go down, my ISP is the least reliable of them all and I have never had both my ISP and cell service go out at the same time. I have the ability to go online one way or the other, but the tiny data caps of my mobile internet service makes streaming/gaming impractical.

Its a weak argument.

The amount of time you are down is minuscule compared to uptime. I think you just need to realize that any utility can fail. Natural Gas, Water, Sewer, Garbage pickup, Internet, Cell service and so on.

Plan on alternatives when something happens not think of the worse. Even if you have a streaming outage (host, ISP, network), it's not broadcast, you can go right back to what you were watching when it failed, afterwards.

One should be more concerned in the winter with power going dead in a house!
