As was said, I can understand why it went over like it did, with the Bond 50 celebrations and the TDK-esque story, but I just don't like it that much. I don't even think it looks that nice, it's got this ultra-sharp ultra-digital appearance (to me) and I'd much rather have my Bonds on film. So at least Spectre has that going for it.

Casino Royale did that. Giving Bond his thug reputation back.

Only financially. Casino Royale has a higher RT score. Also, it's a much better film.

OK maybe not a thug but nothing like how Brosnan played him in his latter films. More like how Connery first played him or Dalton.

Dalton was a spy, and a scalpel not the blunt instrument of Craig.
Dalton was the treal Flemming Bond

Oscars speak louder than RT
But yeah, it is better. No argument there.

Yes, it's already been confirmed by the press. That already makes it better than Skyfall.

Only technical Oscars. U-571 has an Oscar, so I don't think that really matters.

Oh, On Her Majesty's Secret Service is my favourite of them all. I adore that film but strangely enough I've yet to read the book. I never read past Dr. No, which was Fleming's sixth in the series, I believe?

Anyway, my other half and I just re-watched Licence to Kill, another one which I think is brilliant.

I re-read the books a while back, I'm amazed that we never got the [book spoiler]
[Show spoiler] 'brainwashed Bond' angle which was in TMWTGG as that would've made for one hell of a pre-credits sequence. Love Blofeld's assumed name in YOLT, 'Shatterhand' would be a fantastic title for a Bond film.

Speak for yourself. Unless you've conducted a scientifically credible survey, you have no idea what people like.

The Bond books are among the biggest best sellers of their type of all time, so obviously there were a lot of people who liked book Bond.

I'd personally love to see a couple of things from the novel of YOLT that never made it to the big screen:
[Show spoiler]Bond learning true ninja skills and infiltrating a castle on an assassination mission, and Bond getting amnesia and having to relearn who he is. Wouldn't mind the stuff about him having a possible illegitimate child left behind, but that might seem screwy for the films, especially since they're trying to connect other stuff right now
. Those were things that kinda blew me away in the books.

I agree that
[Show spoiler]Shatterhand
sounds like an awesome title.

The one thing from the books that I truly, truly miss in the movies is the sense of continuity from one story to the next. And even though Dr No was the first in the film series it felt like it already belonged in a larger world thanks to the comments about Bond being in traction for 6 months (or whatever it was) after his Beretta jammed, leading to him being issued with the Walther. But not long after that all that stuff went out the window, apart from the fan service in OHMSS of Bond looking through his desk and the occasional reference to Tracy in FYEO and LTK.

Yeah, the continuity in the classics seems to only exist in the first two movies, unfortunately (although it's not all bad until DAF). But that's also why I like the Craig movies as much as I do - they are all connected up to now, with CR being a new beginning, QoS resolving CR's unanswered questions, and Skyfall rearranging everything.
