Thanks Mike for taking time out to share your thoughts. I felt good about repairing my sixty gb first gen fatty based on instructions in this thread. Less confident for this slim... I am looking for a local repsir guy I've used before but if not I will probably just get a replacemrnt and port over the profiles, etc. since everything else is good... then it will just be a suped up DVD player... or maybe I will try the laser repair after I port over my the kids data safely,

Thanks again!

I read this thread and I didn't see anything for error code 8002F14E. I got this code while downloading the most recent update. I have a 80gig Motorstorm edition and when the update gets to 99% this error comes up. Whenever I turn on the PS3 it goes into a loop of trying to update so I don't have access to anything on the PS3. After researching on the web, many people think it's the laser. I replaced my laser about a year ago, so is there anyway to check if the laser is ok?

I'm having a issue with my 120Gb Slim. It reads Blu-Ray Games fine, no problems but on a couple of Blu-Ray movies it doesn't seem to read the disc correctly. I insert the disc and I can here it trying to read the disc but then it seems to try and eject the disc but it doesn't eject and no icon appears on the XMB. Eventually after inserting and ejecting the disc numerous times it reads it ok.
Any ideas what it could be?

Default PS3 slim 120gb blu-laser

Thought I would try to make it easy and stop by fry's to see if they had the replacement (Blu-lens / laser) kit or part. NO ! may seem silly, but with all of the PC options available in-store, why not?
Anywho, is there any chance of finding these parts at any retail store?
I don't trust any yahoo with my system (swapping parts, spilled soda, ham-witch motherboard) like the specialty PS3 type o' place. I'll do 'er myself.
I don't mind buying online, but retail would be best.
Is this the only model/type I should be looking at?
PS3 KES-450A Blu-Ray Laser Lens SLIM.
Lowest I saw was about $36-40 clams on ebay. (hate waiting for delivery)

Yesterday morning my PS3 couldn't find my IP Address. I haven't made any changes to my settings and i still can't get it to work. What should i do? The only thing i can think of is to press the power button/unplug and replug the router lol.

My PS3 YLOD' again for the third time. I'm sick and tired of fixing it. Ugh, anyone wanna just donate $5 here, $10 there for me? Times are tough. And I swear, if I fix or have my 60gig fixed again and it breaks,.. I'm gonna take a guitar and smash that thing through the system.

I guess I'll look for a guy or cute girl to fix it.

My 80 GB just did for the first time. Last night it just shut off without warning. Most likely got too hot. I wasn't necessarily working it that hard, but it has put in a lot of hours the past 4 years.

I may try the reflow technique and hopefully buy time to back it up. Maybe I'll also check how much Sony is charging, although I would lose my data.

Looking at some of the slim bundles...

Default Kes-kem 460-470aaa ?

just did a search for any newer model laser replacements,
low and behold 460-470 AAA, is there any truth to this before I pull the trigger? Not too sure about these, no details about blu capabilities.
(PS3 slim 120gb) -not that the GB would matter correct? Slim or fat would be the differences.

original blu-laser kem450AAA

Reflowed my 80 gb then transferred the data over to a new 320 gb slim. The 80 gb seems to be working fine, had it on for 4 hours or so transferring. Probably will reformat the hard drive next; maybe play used discs on it. What to do with the old PS3...

Default PS3 slim not accepting disc

Bought the kem450AAA blu-laser replacement and now the drive will not accept the disk.
I have taken every-thing apart and checked all connections, screws, 15 times.
I can shove the disk in and hold the eject button for 10-15 seconds and it ejects perfectly, now why can't it detect the disk?
All demos or tutorials are for the FAT, nothing slim...ughhhh
People sure seem to be having the exact same issue, no results on Google/Youtube.

Default How reliable is the PS3 slim compared to the fat?

My original launch day PS3 has bit the dust for good, leaving the GPU fried and the main board damaged beyond repair.

I would like to buy a new slim PS3. However, I would like to know if the new slims have proven to be any more reliable than the original fat models, or is the failure rate similar?

Is overheating still a big issue with the slim, and do they run as hot as the original fat models?

Any information you can provide, or data you can point to, would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Also, can I swap the existing hard drive from my old PS3 fat to a new slim and use it as is without reformatting? Or would the new PS3 still need to reformat the drive?

It will reformat so you need to do a backup first, also note that if you do a backup and restore to a DIFFERENT PS3, copy protected content (saves etc) won't restore.

Quick Question for anyone that may know....

I have a 500GB drive in my PS3 and the original 60GB drive went into a old Macbook that had a hard drive failure.

If my PS3 died today (and it wasn't a hard drive failure) could I send it to Sony for exchange with the 80GB crapped out Hard Drive from the Macbook?

My original 60GB PS3 lasted almost 3 years and I had a 3 year warranty so I was able to have it exchanged at no cost. The replacement is coming up on 3 years so I think it will possibly fail again.

I am just saying it out of the top of my head, so feel free to ignore me... but my guess is NO! I won't be surprised if SONY actually keeps track with all components' serial numbers inside any given PS3 they have sold. So my guess is, when they see a 'mis-match' serial number of the HD, they won't touch it any further.

They said you can send the PS3 in for service without a hard drive and it would be serviced and returned without a hard drive.

They said if you send it in with the "original" hard drive installed you can trade for a 120GB system (for $99+tax.)

I still have the original drive (it's in an old macbook), it would be a pain to get out of that old macbook but I guess I'll have to burn that bridge when I get to it.
