It had been a long time since I last watched The Croods, an animated film released by DreamWorks in 2011 regarding a prehistoric family's journey for a new home.
Wonderful 3D with very nice depth, detail and color saturation though more ingenuity could have been used to further enhance the overall deep spatial separation. Easily a winner. |

Been five years since i watched UP. What a delight....and reaching the "golden years" myself, really makes the opening bring a tear to my eye....and the 3D certainly makes me smile.

A great film but the 3D makes me sad. Instead of Pixar's first 3D title being an outstanding use of the format it was so mild as to serve no purpose other than to give everything a bit of volume. And that was the philosophy they ran with, dial the 3D back so far that people who hate 3D can tolerate it. A real 2D mindset.

Today on the 3D menu was a rewatch of IMAX Space Station, mainly to hear it with DTS:x audio. But in doing so I forgot how great the 3D is. The shoot was obviously planned like a movie to make the best use of 3D. As I've said before, it reminds me a lot of Gravity but with stronger 3D. The best 3D moment is when they are celebrating a birthday and I felt I was there with them trying to catch the floating food
![]() Just like the Atmos audio for Gravity, the DTS:x audio definitely helps with the overall immersion. But the standout moments are the rocket launches. The Proton rocket launch is powerful but it's the flying debris aurally surrounding you that seals the deal. When the camera lens cracked it almost felt like my VR lenses cracked too. The final Discovery Shuttle launch is just pure LFE (imagine the thunder roll from the Dolby Amaze demo on a loop), then you join them inside with the Shuttle shaking all around you. IMAX Hubble is flashier but I now get why many of you think this is better. Last edited by cdx47; 05-17-2024 at 09:10 AM. |

I'm finally at the stage where the weaker 3D of Incredibles 2 actually looks 3D. So is UP 3D better/worse or the same as Incredibles 2?

Again watched the 2014 suspense horror thriller from Poland, Ostra Randka (Rough Date). Very strong 3D and I found the story itself not to be as bad as most reviewers did. Might not be for everybody. Adult and gory.
Please note one needs to access the Pop Menu in order to activate the English subtitles - it cannot be activated using the main menu. |

Today I finally sat down to watch Valerian. Before watching it, my preconceptions were that it has great 3D and visuals with possibly great audio, but terrible acting, story and chemistry between the leads. But after watching Valerian, it's a little more complicated than that.
The 3D is excellent. Lots of depth and immersive elements and the space scenes in particular are up there with Captain Marvel but with many more examples of great scenes. The alien species are a little derivative of Besson's previous work and the holo helmets just look stupid. Also, the cgi sometimes looks like cgi. But in general the visuals are spectacular so this should look stunning in HDR. The Atmos audio is immersive with a decent amount of LFE, but it could have gone a bit louder and deeper. The acting is a mixed bag and so is the chemistry between Delevingne and DeHaan seesawing between passable and just plain bad. The script is humorous at times, but when bad becomes unintentionally laugh out loud funny at others. This is the ultimate style over substance movie but that style does just enough and I had fun ![]() Last edited by cdx47; 05-18-2024 at 09:37 AM. |

I received all of my MCU Movienex films yesterday and today. I watched Black Widow last night. 3d was good for the most part, but scenes in big open spaces such as the field where her hideout was in Norway and the plane landing in Cuba seemed unnatural with the conversion. It was also apparent in some of the fight scenes that the 3d conversion was an afterthought as there were a lot of rapid cuts to alternate angles - the first fight with Task Master on the bridge was annoying with this. Overall it was enjoyable though and it was nice to finally see this in 3d. I’m looking forward to watching the others over the next couple of weeks. I saw everything from Dr. Strange on in 3d in the theaters, so it will be nice to finally experience Shang Chi and the Eternals in 3d. Right now I’m planning on just toggling the subtitles for the native non-English dialogue. I have a Panasonic player so the Oppo USB trick won’t work for me. I don’t have much experience ripping discs since the days of DVDs - but from what I’ve been reading it looks like the best option is to rip the disc and create an MKV file and add a new subtitle file. For those with experience doing this, does the MKV file degrade the 3d and picture quality? I don’t want to waste a bunch of time converting and would rather toggle subtitles if the picture is impacted. And once I have an MKV file created, does it matter if I burn a disk or save it on a thumb drive? Thanks in advance for your feedback.
