True. I would say the Star Wars trilogy for millennials is the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Gen Z doesn't have one. At least not yet.

The word "masterpiece" is used WAY too much.

It absolutely is not. Film is subjective therefore a masterpiece is in the eye of the beholder. There are movies that a lot of people would consider a masterpiece that I outright dislike and vice versa.

Same with “auteur”. Gets thrown around so casually these days for directors that don’t actually warrant that distinction.

I forget which movie, might have been Watchmen came out and they kept saying "From the Visionary Director Zack Snyder". It's like...calm down, he's made 2 movies, one of which is a remake. Wait for like 6 or 7 good movies before calling someone a "visionary"

And that's not an insult to ZS, I like some of his movies. I just think marketing teams go overboard using every catch all phrase to imply superiority. As someone said above with "Masterpiece". OBVIOUSLY film is subjective, but when you use a word like Masterpiece, it implies a higher level of film.

I love the movie Silent Night Deadly Night 2, if someone called it a masterpiece unironically I'd laugh at them. Doesn't mean it's not a good movie.

Lord of the Rings isn't fit to lace Star Wars' boots. And I'm not exactly a Star Wars ultrafan.

You're exactly right. The Lord of the Rings franchise has no business lacing any other franchise's boots. It's far above such menial tasks

Let's not talk about Rings of Power though.

I think the Star Wars for millennials is Star Wars, as it had that resurgence/Golden Age in the 90s & early 00s. Unfortunately the Prequel Trilogy put a damper on that. If the Postquel Trilogy hadn't fumbled then maybe Star Wars could be the Star Wars of Gen Z as well.

Sadly Gen Z's time is done and Hollywood left 'em hanging, they got the "diet coke" version of the franchises of prior generations. At least they sorta got Thanos, he had some iconic quotes that'll likely be in the vernacular for a long while yet.

Hopefully Gen Alpha can get a true trilogy, they've still got maybe a decade for that to happen.

A little old now for that. But they are in the same league as far as quality and staying power are concerned , for sure!

Yep. Avengers is this gens thing. Disney Star Wars movies? Nah, long forgotten and they just don’t matter. Star Wars is more of a "thing" for older aged people. Makes sense because we were kids when it came out. Kind of hard to rope in 16-20 year olds into a franchise that were never there for the beginning. So, Star Wars to them is just "yeah, whatever". They make money and all that blah blah stuff. But this generation isn’t invested in them much at all. They saw them(sequels) and soon forgot about them.

I don't think the comparison works in turns of box office, merchandising and staying power.

A better comparison would be the MCU in its entirety, IMO.
